(1): OOW presentations

2001-08-08 Thread The Oracle DBA

Well,

I have to admit, I was a bit disappointed. My "audit" paper is pretty popular at the
local user group meetings. I also had an abstract detailing what we are doing to prep
our clients for 9i. I thought both would be good candidates. I was surprised that
neither was picked.

Oh well ...

Cheers,

Earl

RE: IMP 8.1.6 to 8.1.7 DB

2001-08-08 Thread The Oracle DBA

I thought the question was taking an 816 .dmp files into 817. If that is the question,
the answer is yes. You can usually/always go from older into "newer". Its one of the 3
upgrade/migration methods - even in 9i.

Re: Is Oracle8.1.7 certified for NT4.0 ?

2001-08-09 Thread The Oracle DBA

It is certified, but there are some VERY important patches to apply. I am up to
8.1.7.1.5.

Now if 9i would just come out for NT! :-)

Re: Oracle 8.1.7 client install on Win2K.

2001-08-09 Thread The Oracle DBA

Mark,

Check "colors" in the display setting (right button over the wallpaper). Make sure it
is 256 colors or higher. I remember a Java display bug that you may be hitting.
Otherwise, create a run a simple java graphics program. If that fails too, then I
think your display trick may be the cause.

Cheers,

RE: database upgrade policy?

2001-08-23 Thread The Oracle DBA

In the case of 816, it is desupported in October, so get to 817 ASAP.

In the case of patches, try to watch for problems noted in MetaLink. Things like
SQL*Net Demial Of Service fixes, I like to get them in right away. Otherwise, most
client make me implement "if it is not broken, do not patch it". And remember: the
patch and even the README file may have errors too.

In the case of 9i, I beleive you should have a test instance up now to test and learn.

Cheers,

Earl

When you created the 817 DBs, did you use the GUI or did you use the command line and

did you use autostart?

RE: 81721 upgrade and event 10520

2001-09-06 Thread The Oracle DBA

I applied 81721 patch to 817 on NT. Unlike the other 'move these files here and those
there' patches, this was thru the Installer.

So far, no problems.

Cheers,

REP: writing to renamed Listener.log file

2001-05-29 Thread The Oracle DBA

Actually, I just talked to Worldwide Support about this issue.

They recommend using the set log_file command to rename the file to another file name
("templisten.log" for example)- for the life of the listener session. After that, you
can reset/delete/purge the listener.log file safely. Then bounce the listener and it
will begin writing to listener.log file again.

LSNRCTL> help set log_file
set|show log_{ } []: set|show log parameters of current listener

I need to find the article I had saved about Oracle 6.0 (as we were preparing to
upgrade from 5.1). It was something about how the 6.0 DBA would be bored and would now
be able to help appdev.

1 - Anyone see corruption after a TRUNCATE PARTITION?

2001-06-07 Thread The Oracle DBA

My client truncates large partitions in 816 and 805 Solaris. Sometimes they get PL/SQL
block corruption reported errors after this. Dropping and re-creating the partition
does not have any problems. The partitions are 2 to 10G.

Anyone see this?

Earl

RE: Space Manager vs. Live ReOrg vs TS ReOrg

2001-06-18 Thread The Oracle DBA

I agree with Kevin. I always use hand-made scripts. There is a risk with any 3rd party
tool. There are version issues, patches, OS issues, etc. Scripts, on the other hand,
can be customized to do the exact amount of work at the exact time you want it done.

Earl

REP: Locally Managed Tablespaces

Are you using uniform extents? We are told they are not really = and actually are not
the same at all over time.

Thanks,

Re: REP: Locally Managed Tablespaces

2001-04-24 Thread The Oracle DBA

A couple of threads here and in other lists have mentioned this. A person puts LMTSs
up and sets uniform extents on and sets it to, say 1M. Later they notice that not all
extents are 1M.

Thanks,

Earl

Re: Need oracle patch 8.1.7.1.1

2001-05-04 Thread The Oracle DBA

I guess you are not on NT because the .1.1 patch is there. The std procedure for 817
is to install 817, patch it to .1.1 then .1.2.

Real-life Stand-by DB implementation stories?

2001-04-26 Thread The Oracle DBA

Anyone implemented SBDBs recenetly? A client is comparing them to a cluster solution
involving Fail-Safe. We are recommending SBDB and trying to go to 817 also (on 80521
now).

Also this is NT if that makes a difference.

Thanks,

Earl

I have never, but if you install OPS during install, does that make a 'mark' for DBs
