High CPU usage by Oracle

2002-01-22 Thread Uma Mohoni

Hi,
I would like help with this problem I am grappling with since yesterday. One
of the test boxes with Sun Solaris 2.7 OS and Oracle 8.1.7.2 on it has
started showing 97% and above CPU usage mostly by Oracle . It has slowed
down the application to a point where the testers can not test. Does any one
have any idea why Oracle would suddenly hog CPU so much? The normal CPU
usage on these boxes is 2%-3%. All help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in
advance.

Thanks,

RE: High CPU usage by Oracle

2002-01-22 Thread Uma Mohoni

Yeah there was a sudden burst of activity in data insert, updates and
deletes over the weekend as a result of a new app module being tested. But
the client app uses Java code and is not in the database. So its nothing I
can ask them to remove. On the other hand sudden bursts of data activity is
something that might very well happen in the normal course of the
application so I guess I need to be prepared for it..Thanks, for the
suggestion.

Has there been any changes in the applications? I had someone put in new
code this weekend and it sent my CPU up over 80%. When I saw that Monday
morning, I had the developer take the code out and my CPU dropped back down
to around the 5 - 10%. From my little experience I have quickly learned
that when you see something like your CPU go up, check what modifications to
applications have occurred.

RE: 8.1.7 on W2K

I created the database on NT using scripts and I did use auto start for the
service. Sorry for the delay in reply..was out over the long weekend.

Who created the DBs on NT? How?

When you created the 817 DBs, did you use the GUI or did you use the command
line and a script?

did you use autostart?

Cheers,

Earl

Hi people,

A few weeks back somebody posted a message regarding an eval they are doing
comparing Oracle/DB2/SQLServer.

I came across a great document today for an Oracle/DB2 comparison, so if
that person - sorry I can't remember who it was - is interested, contact me
back channel, and I'll send it over to you.

Regards

Mark
