RE: OT -: SQL BackTrack info

2002-01-16 Thread Valuthur, Srikanth

Its a great product for the price. I have used it in and out for 5 years
internationally and truly it is the best backup/recovery product we have.
There are some pros and cons to using the tool:

Pros:

1. Great product, works brilliant & works all the time.
2. Upgrades are simple.

Cons:

1. Price
2. Support is a mess(most of the time)
3. You have to read the whole manual to understand it. Never skip pages on
that.
4. FOLLOW THEIR INSTURCTIONS. MOST IMPORTANT. NO PRESUMPTIONS ALLOWED.
Whether it is to install or deinstall, You have to follow their step by
step instructions for it to work properly.

We tried several ways for the product to work properly and finally
surrendered to the manual. ORACLE DBAs - We cannot use the oracle
technique for SQL B/T

My 2 cents

We have been using it for about 5 years on both Unix and NT. We have it
connected to Netbackup to handle the tapes. We love it. I agree that the
support is not what it used to be but we hardly ever need support.
Although, the last time we called we got a support person that knew more
about Oracle than
we did and knew SQL Backtrack inside and out. It's a great tool!

I am looking for some guidance from people who use this product. Is it a
value add to the organization or not. If possible also let me know how in
the hell does it do a online object extraction from the backup.

Would appreciate all your comments and recommendations

RE: EMC product DB tuner

2002-01-07 Thread Valuthur, Srikanth

We have purchased DBTuner for all our prod servers. It is very costly. BUt
It is very useful to the DBAs. As of now we are totally unaware of what is
happening over the EMC Disk world. This tool allows us to interact with the
Meta Volumes and tune accordingly. Another good thing with the tools is
real life simulation. It could tell you how much of appreciation on results
you will have if you make this change. Since most of the stuff is read only
on this tool, the risk of damaging the system is relatively less. I am
still new to this tool, But I have done quite a bit of work on this. We
havent put it on production yet, BUt looking to do sometime in 1st quarter.

RE: RMAN & Oracle Business Suite for Oracle

2001-08-31 Thread Valuthur, Srikanth

WE have the same suite what you have mentioned. We are backing up around 60
databases incremental and around 20 fulls everyday using RMAN. We do have
some occassional problems, But we are able to fix it.

I would suggest metalink would be first source for you to start. They have
put some excellent documents about setting up RMAN and getting around issues
with RMAN. That would be helpful. Once you start, Any issues you face we
can help you get thru(Presuming we know that error)

OK, I have avoided RMAN and hot backups for some years now. I have always
used my trusty scripts. Having come from the sysadmin side of dba, I prefer
backups/restores that I can control. I am leary of depending on RMAN, but I
have no choice b/c this 1tb db of blobs is just too big for full backups. I
need to do incremental backups using RMAN and Legato's Oracle Business
Suite.

Question: Has anyone used the aforementioned products together to do
incremental backups? And if so, any quick guide to set up and
configuration?

Thanks,
Gene
*Now Forced to use RMAN*

PS. The db is 950gb blobs. I am trying to get the vendor to put the blobs
on the filesystem where they belong, but they are a big informix shop and
like blobs in the db. I am building a case to remove the blobs. So far I
have:

1. Backup/restore window would shrink, as well as performance degradtion
during the backup window.
2. Db copies (e.g. for dev, test, web, ...) would be more managable.
3. Oracle upgrades would be more managable. I prefer exp/imp for upgrades.
Oracle's migrate utility is never clean. Besides, get a reorg out of an
upgrade.

Any other ideas I may have missed?

RE: !! *Very* important Oracle-L message !!

2001-08-29 Thread Valuthur, Srikanth

I agree to David. We should basically have Bruce decide what is the amount
needed to maintain this list. Also I would think since most of us are using
this site on a day to day basis, It wouldnt be fair that one person paying
25$ and another person pays nothing. My 2 cents would be Since Bruce knows
how many members, He could assign the amount and divde it by number of
members. Now that value could be the base amount. Its left to everyones
consciousness and how much they think they have benifited from this list to
donate more or less or nothing. I am sure most of us go by consiciousness
and would rate a fair value to ourselves and for maintaining this site.

But how much is too much is the big question, Which Bruce has to answer?

This is just my idea and need not be followed if it dosen't makes any sense.

I didn't put OT in the header because I think this is very on topic. I
will be emailing Bruce to see what he needs, or feels is a fair
contribution for my participation in this list through the years. I have
gained so much from the members of this list. Without those who
participate, both past and present, I would never have progressed as far
along the DBA route as I have. Ofttimes, I'll read about a problem someone
has posted here and, although I can't help them, I do copious research to
further my education and knowledge. Many of these problems have
subsequently cropped up within my DB's, and I am much better prepared to
handle them as a result. I also save, research, and test many of the
scripts posted here. Some work, some don't, some can afford to be tweaked,
but playing with them has given me a deeper understanding of what goes into
being a DBA (plus I've now got a great toolkit - just need to learn PERL!).

I pay for my subscription to the daily newspaper. This forum is at least
as valuable to me as the newspaper (I even get the comic section here).

There is a cost to the Internet - that's why many of us have jobs. I urge
the members of this community to search their conciouses and give what they
can to help this forum prosper.

Someday I'd like to make it to OOW and meet some of you (heck, I've thought
about driving down to San Antonio just to meet Scott. Does Mladen ever
leave his cave?)

Interesting Problem

2001-08-24 Thread Valuthur, Srikanth

Hi all,

I am sure someone should be able to help me on this. I am having a user
having problem when inserting a data that is from Legacy Systems into
oracle. His 'Cent' symbol getting converted to Inverted 'Question Mark'.
NOw everthing is 'cent' until it goes into database. Oracle suggested me to
do some tests based on NLS VAriables being set. NOw when I set those and
tried on backend thru sqlplus/sql loader the tests come out successful as
'cent'. But If I dont set the NLS_Variables, It sets it as Quote mark.
The Developer said that setting NLS did not work for him as he had bulk load
of programs that uses triggers and other things...

The big question here is 1. Should NLS parameter setting be a part of Oracle
Parameters for day to day usage. 2. How do we incorprate this to the front
end as the load is coming via the front end? 3. Is this a known problem or
bug?

Let me know some suggestions as this is bugging my head

Thanx

RE: EMC Timefinder

2001-08-08 Thread Valuthur, Srikanth

Wow,

This reply is little bit different. I thought BCV and RMAN go hand in hand.
I never thought BCV or RMAN. I do understand the power of RMAN, But
considering the time it takes to do the BAckups/REstores as supposed to BCV,
Its defeated. BAck in my previous environment, I used SQL B/T, Backup the
volumes, Do a Split and REstore those volumes to the failover machine.
Since SQL B/T handles most of the issues, I am fine with that. Here Rman
throws me out saying that DBID is already registered in another source and
so cannot backup. The real question is 1. What steps to follow? 2. What
Order to follow?

I am very new to RMAN and so these procedures confuse me..

Srikanth,
We used to have BCVs/Symmetrix on somany production databases. But most of
the
databases are moving from BCVs to RMAN. Infact there are very few BCVs left.

With RMAN we can do the hot backups and also do not need another machine to
synch up the BCVs. Also instead of using Symmetrix storage for space, Tape
is
used for backups using EDM software. RMAN allows us to duplicate the
database
onto another machine (that way production db can copied to test db with a
different file structure and DB name)

So do some research on what you want, BCV or RMAN for your backup needs.
Both
have pros and cons...

This is a pretty large, complex topic. Which is likely why you didn't get
any replies. Myself not having enough time to go into many details, here are
few key points:

We run on EMC. We don't use RMAN.

Biggest pro:
BCV - business continuation volumes. I can afford 5 minutes of downtime
weekly. In that window I get a full cold backup of few hundred gigs of
database files.

Cons:
Complex beast to setup from EMC side. This translates in very few available
resources who can do so.
Double the disk - for BCV with secondary, online copy of everything. We
learned with our Symmetrix box that its not the amount of disk thats costly,
but the effort to add additional disks.

Process to setup?
1. Identify your availability requirements.
2. Overestimate storage requirements. Multiply by two.
3. You do have a fail-over machine? It will have to support entire
production load if primary fails, plus local apps - don't undersize.
4. Train some one onsite in EMC ways.
5. Fail-over box, in our case, drives the BCV process - go from there.

Hi Folks,

Good Morning. I am very new to this forum, So Please bear with me for any
mistakes. I am also relatively new to the oracle 8 front(I am coming back
to oracle after a gap of 4 years). So the question may be stupid.

We are trying to set up an environment using Oracle 8.1.7, Emc Timefinder
and RMAN. While there are no documents to describe how to do the setup on
this, We did find some notes. But those are with oracle 7.0.

Is someone on the group has this kind of setup? If so, Can you update me on
the process?? Any Pros and Cons to go with this?

Thanx for all responses
