RE: GA date for 9i database on Windows NT

2001-07-23 Thread Wolfe, Charles

9i beta for NT/2K is slated for release this month to beta program
participants, but has not been released yet. General availability is still
probably a few months away.

Does anyone know when the NT version of 9i will be available ?

Look in your $ORACLE_HOME/bin

IIRC, you can still get a cold Natty Boh at the O's new digs (Oriole Park at

Well, the G. Heileman brewery in Balto was closed and put up for sale in
1996. Since then, the National Bohemian trademark has been owned by Stroh's
and is currently owned by Pabst. You can still get Natty Boh in Maryland,
but it is no longer brewed here. Kinda like when Sam Adams Boston Lager
used to be brewed in Pittsburgh.

BTW, any Haffenreffer fans on the list.

Give me a good, home brewed Weissbier or IPA any day.

yeah, the download is free - but you have to own a SPARC box to use it.

I saw a quote for the following - (refurbished)

 E450
 2 x 400 MHz CPUs - 4 MB cache
 4 x 256 MB RAM
 4 x 9.1 GB hard drives
SCSI controllers, fast ethernet, video adapter

 $12,000

Kinda steep when you're used to Intel boxes.
Looks like I might hunt on Ebay for awhile longer.

RE: Slightly OT: Capturing a failed status of an ftp process

Try using expect to script the ftp session.

I think I've seen an answer to this, but I never needed it before. If
anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it.

We are trying to ftp files from one server to another. (Archive logs
for Oracle). We want to be able to capture the status when the ftp
fails, so that we can notify the DBAs to check the process out. This is
all being done within a shell script that compress the log file first,
then calls another script to do the actual ftp. But when the child
script executes, it returns a successful status to the parent script. I
don't know any way to tell the script that is doing the ftp to send the
message, because any non-ftp command within that script fails. (Of
course, that could just be because I don't know how to do what I want to
do).

If anybody has invented this wheel before, or has any tips on where to
look for more info on how to do what I need to do, please let me know.

TIA,

Terry

Jacques,

You're right. Preparing for a dance competition IS more challenging than DB
recovery - my wife and I rehearse somewhere between 400 and 600 hours/year
to dance a total of maybe 45 to 90 minutes in each of our four annual
competitions. However, it's so much more satisfying! Plus, it helps keep
you sharp and in shape for those times you do have to sit at a workstation,
doing recovery or some such sedentary thing. Actually, we Jazzercise
(Aerobics) about 300 hours per year just to stay in shape to rehearse!

We do American Smooth (Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz) and American
Rhythm (ChaCha, Rumba, Swing, Bolero, Mambo). The American Style, to us, is
more fun, especially since you can do almost all the dances socially. Not
so with some of the International Style dances, such as Quick Step, Samba,
and Paso Doble. Also, IMHO, American Smooth is much harder than
International Standard - the rapid changes from open to closed positions
make it very difficult to do with finesse.

No, you wouldn't want to see me shake my 50 year old bootie, though my Cuban
Motion (in Rumba) *is* getting pretty good for a "Bullet-Headed Saxon
Mother's Son" (extra points for whoever can name the song that phrase came
from!)! My wife's slinky and/or graceful moves keep everyone distracted
from noticing my clumsier moments - she's a treat to watch!

Yep, we're "Fred and Ginger". She's every bit as talented as Ginger Rogers
while I, unfortunately, am closer to Flintstone (or Mertz) than Astaire!

Now MY idea of a heavenly DBA gig would be at something like
the Fred Astaire or Arthur Murray World Headquarters, where
  ...

Don't listen to him! My wife participates in dance competitions and has
"persuaded" me to join her in taking dance lessons at a local dance studio.
I would prefer having to recover a crashed 24x7 mission critical database
than have to enter a dance competition.

Jack, do you do ballroom or latin/jive? Of course, I happen to prefer
ballroom (where you can get away with looking bored while you're dancing)
and my wife likes latin (our salsa instructor is constantly exhorting us to
"shake our booties" - trust me, you don't want to see a DBA shaking his
booty).

RE: Callout...NOT SOLVED!

2001-02-23 Thread Wolfe, Charles

Rocky,

/usr/ucb/cc isn't really a C compiler. It is a shell script for compiling
BSD-compatible C code using Sun's Forte C (formerly Sun Workshop
Professional C) compiler. Relinking the Oracle executables doesn't usually
require a C compiler, only make and ld.

Instead of "which cc", try pkginfo and grep for cc.

Chuck

Thanks, Ross.
I issued the command you suggested (the which cc comand) and it found the
compiler just fine. If I relink the oracle executables it works fine.
Any other thoughts?

did you install the c compiler?

( You'd think Scott would put one there, but
he might be too busy getting fitted for a custom

If so, which one? where is it located?
Do a "which cc" and if it doesn't find your
compiler, you need to either install it, or
edit the mk file to redirect to an extant compiler.

solaris seems to know about, but doesn't appear
 to find /usr/ucb/cc
