DB link for nonoracle databases

2001-05-01 Thread Deepender Kr Gupta

Hi All !!

I have a DBA question. Can we make a DB link for nonoracle databases ! The
answer is
'YES' , I know. But How.

The documentation says you will have to use Oracle
hetrogeneous services. There is no explaination any
further.

I want my Oracle database to gather data from a SQL
server . Both are on NT.

Thanks in Advance.

You have to setup heterogeous services.
Check in the Net8 guide under Configuring connections
to non-Oracle Databases Services.

Here what I've done to have a dblink between Oracle
816/Solaris and SQLServer 6.5 via ODBC MERANT.

Modify listener.ora to listen to hsodbc.
Add en entry in tnsnames.ora to point on hsodbc.

Create a dblink on hsodbc.
I was able to read/write on tables on SQLServer.
Even if it's not support, I was able to run a stored
proc on SQLServer with
dbms_hs_passthrough.execute_immediate.

The only bad thing is that all processes were frozen
on SQLServer until I log out.

'Oracle heterogeneous services' are purchased separately. They are services
that run on the target systems that allow Oracle to talk to them through
Net*8. We use an Oracle gateway to talk to our AS400s. For the most part,
this works well. Call your rep.

Hi,

check the following documentation set:

Oracle8i Distributed Database Systems
Part III
Heterogeneous Services Concepts and Administration

You have to distinguish 2 kinds of Heterogenous Services:
Transparent Gateway and Generic Connectivity.

Transparent Gateway has to be purchased seperately and offers 2
services:
SQL access to non-Oracle data sources (like DB2 e.g.) and transaction
services, meaning
that e.g. DB2 tables might be included in Oracle transactions.

Generic Connectivity comes with Oracle Server (at least the EE). It
allows you to
connect to ODBC and OLE DB data sources (like Excel Sheets or e.g. DB2
through ODBC).
Oracle has to be run on NT/2000. Connecting to other databases via the
ODBC/OLE DB gateway gives you the
ability of accessing external data like tables. We tried it, it works
fine and is in my opinion a good
and cheap solution for data transfers (unless you have any high volume /
online needs).

Hi,

2 Metalink notes you might find useful:
114820.1 helpful - "QUICK START GUIDE: WIN NT - Generic Connectivity using
ODBC"
109730.1 - How to setup generic connectivity (Heterogeneous Services) for
Windows NT

Also, as far as I know, Heterogeneous Services only works with 8.1.6 and
above.
