You mean like the programmers of the Oracle Applications? What would we need for that, a missile? (What kills me is that, they don't use declared foreign key constraints in the database. Presumably, since the code base is so old, if they introduced them now everything would break. You'd think they could at least put disabled ones in there...) RE: OT: Archiving not possible with SQL Server?
Bet you aren't an idiot: bet you're suffering from Microsoft-induced aphasia. I hate MS's habit of taking perfectly good industry vocabulary and making the words mean too-specific proprietary things. Works in MS's favor: helps the MSCEs makes the rest of the world feel like idiots! As far as the archiving, I curse both houses Oracle and Microsoft. On my old RDB (when it was Digital) database, I could take a reliable fast full backup any old time, and throw away any old backups that I'd created before. Not like Oracle where I have to quilt together old redo logs/datafiles or SQL Server where I have to keep all of the silly transaction logs to make any kind of reliable copy. Before you flame: yes I could quilt together RDB with the After-Image Journals, and I could take am Oracle backup with export/import or use a fancy Sql Server utility and have a semi-reliable backup. I'm only arguing that the scale of work associated with the task at hand seemed much more appropriate in RDB. 'Course RDB ran on proprietary operating system OOPS! start a new flame! -Original Message- Sent: Thursday, May 31, 2001 9:41 AM To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L Yeah? But you know what? In Sybase, you can just dump tran to a file device, that should clear the log and keep a copy of it in case you need point in time recovery. you shouldn't just truncate it -Original Message- Carmichael Sent: Wednesday, May 30, 2001 2:33 PM To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L I'd get frantic phone calls from the programmers... in the version of Sybase we were using (4.something), truncate actually archived off the log info. -Original Message- Sent: Wednesday, May 30, 2001 1:03 PM To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L Oracle's archived logs = MS transaction log dump files. If you enable "truncate log on chkpt", the transaction log will be truncated every time there is checkpoint. Another way to do is to setup thresholdaction, it will be fired up automically when the space reach certain percentage defined. James And thus you discover the inane mechanism that SQL Server inherited from Sybase, by which both try to do concurrency.
