RE: How much memory is an oracle shadow process using

2002-10-07 Thread John . Hallas

Thanks for your script. The whole site is an excellent resource.
Thanks Tim,

I have run your script and also run a query against statistic 15 and 20 from
v$sessstat
(max UGA and PGA memory used )
SQL
SQL select name,statistic#,sum(value/1024/1024) Curr Mb
  2 from v$sesstat a, v$database c
  3 where statistic# in (16,21)
  4 group by name,statistic#
  5 /

NAME STATISTIC#Curr Mb
- -- --
SID16 2.8621788
SID 21 23.4703255

Running the oramem.sh script I return the following

Total RAM = 16384Mb, Swap = 19779.85Mb used, 2686.51Mb free

Total memory consumption by Oracle instance SID:

# Procs # Procs Max Sum
ForegrndBackgrndShm Kb Priv Kb Total Kb
==  ===
27 16 424600 106144 530744

So oracle shows 26Mb used where using a pmap command returns about 105Mb.

I think I am comparing like with like here but obviously the results don't
show that

Does anybody have any other insight as to how what exactly the values in
statistic# 16 21 can be used to indicate overall memory usage by Oracle
processes

Thanks

John

Thanks for the help Igor but I have managed to work that bit out for myself.
I did think that the posting was reasonably comprehensive and I also
mentioned what the 2 statistics were used for.
Perhaps the only thing I did not mention was that these specific queries are
running against an 8.1.7.3 database but I am really looking for a generic
answer anyway

How much memory is an oracle shadow process using

2002-10-04 Thread John . Hallas

I know this has been discussed before and I have monitored the discussions
but I am not sure that I have seen a clear summary
and set of conclusions.

I am trying to identify how much memory is used by the instance and all
connections.

I can show sga to give a total memory of the base instance
/usr/sbin/pmap -x pid gives a rather verbose output and I struggle to work
out exactly which of the lines is the one I am most interested in
I have also tried ps -eo vsz,pid |grep 5225 where 5225 is the pid of an
oracle connection and that returns a value that includes the SGA and also
bigger than the return from the sql script below

I run the following script to show me how much pga memory has been used for
each process
select name,sid,value/1024/1024 Curr Mb
from v$sesstat a, v$database c
where statistic# = 20 # shows current session PGA

However I am convinced that that query is not accurate as it seems to return
some very small values on systems that are quite busy. Also statistic# =21
which is the maximum for each process does not vary much from current which
disturbs me a little as we have a lot of constant connections

Has anybody got a easier/more accurate method of determing memory usage

Thanks in anticipation

John

Re: How much memory is an oracle shadow process using

2002-10-04 Thread Tim Gorman

I've got a shell script called oramem.sh (online at
www.evdbt.com/tools.htm) that parses and summarizes the output from
pmap -x for you. I'm sure that Oracle records some breakdown information
about how much memory is used for different PGA and UGA areas, but I don't
think that anyone will argue with pmap -x. oramem.sh was written for
and tested upon Solaris 8; can't vouch for it on other platforms...

Hope this helps...

Oracle shadow process

2002-01-30 Thread sonia pajerowski

Hello All,
How does oracle allocate memory to oracle shadow
process (client). eg. oracleORCL
(DESCRIPTION=(LOCAL=no
)(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=BEQ))).

I have dedicated connections to the databases and the
processes are using 320M-340M of memory. Is there any
parameter I can change to reduce the memory allocation
to about 30M or less.

Current value for Sort area size value is 65536.

Thanks

If you are on Solaris, you may be interested in NOTE:
153655.1 SOLARIS: Determing Oracle Memory Usage on
Solaris.

CUT
Many programs which display memory usage, like top
or ps -lf do not distinguish between shared and
private memory and show the SGA usage in each
background and shadow process. Subsequently, it may
appear as though Oracle is using several times more
memory than what is actually installed on the system.
To properly determine how much memory Oracle is using,
you must use a tool which separates private and shared
memory. One such tool is /usr/proc/bin/pmap.

RE: Oracle shadow process

2002-01-30 Thread Johnston, Tim

The problem is that top reports the ENTIRE shared memory segment in EVERY
process... For example... If your shared memory segment is 300M and top
reports memory usage of 320-340M per process... You are in reality using
about 20-40M of private memory in each process and 300M of shared memory...
But, shared memory is only allocated once...

i.e.

Shared memory segment of 300M

top reportsshared memory private usage by process
process1 320M 300M20M
process2 330M 300M30M
process3 320M 300M20M
process4 340M 300M40M

So... Your total memory usage is...

20M + 30M + 20M + 40M + 300M = 410M

Not...

320M + 330M + 320M + 340M = 1310M

Does that help explain it?

RE: Oracle shadow process

2002-01-30 Thread sonia pajerowski

Tim,
Thanks a lot. That was good explanation. Now, all the
numbers add up.

Thanks again

The problem is that top reports the ENTIRE shared
 memory segment in EVERY
process... For example... If your shared memory
 segment is 300M and top
reports memory usage of 320-340M per process... You
 are in reality using
about 20-40M of private memory in each process and
 300M of shared memory...
But, shared memory is only allocated once...

 i.e.

 Shared memory segment of 300M

  top reportsshared memory private
 usage by process
 process1 320M 300M
 20M
 process2 330M 300M
 30M
 process3 320M 300M
 20M
 process4 340M 300M
 40M

So... Your total memory usage is...

 20M + 30M + 20M + 40M + 300M = 410M

 Not...

 320M + 330M + 320M + 340M = 1310M

 Does that help explain it?

I am sorry I did not specify the os. We are using
solaris 2.8 and We are using top utility to look at
the oracle user process. As far as I know, ipcs -ma
will give me the size of the entire memory segment.
 I
am trying to find the values for each user
 connection..

 Thanks
 Sonia P.

Unix I assume? How are you determining the memory
 usage? Many unix
utilities can be misleading (i.e top) and report the
 shared memory segment
in each process... Check ipcs -ma to see the size
 of
 the shared memory
 segment...

 HTH
 Tim
