That should be patch if you got it off Oracle site. The base release is Oracle 8.1.7.0.0. Release 3 is the approved patch which brings you to 8.1.7.3.0. Sorry 8.1.7.Release 3 is in fact 8.1.7.0.0. The Release 3 is the third release of 8i 8.1.5 Release 1 8.1.6 Release 2 8.1.7 Release 3 If you go to Metalink and select patches you can search for the Patches for your platform. You may want to connect as ctxsys and query the user_libraries view to make sure the library paths are pointing to your new 8.1.7 Oracle_home.
