RE: HP OpenView
At another gig the SA's got an Oracle Monitoring "DBA Helper" type product for eval. With their wiz bang toy they thought they could now question the DBA about every little thing and I was getting pestered with lots of meaningless junk. Of course the most prominently dislayed metric was the BCHR. They seemed to think that, since the toy cost so much it must be right and was unveiling esoteric truths about the mysterious Oracle. In an effort to try to convince them that the tool was dumb and I was at least a little smarter than the dumb tool, I said something like, "Here, I have a tool for you... take this hammer and you will automatically become a master carpenter." After their puzzlement I explained that their toy was no better that a hammer in the hands of an uncoordinated, untrained monkey. Eventually they left me alone and they even got to where they believed me... most of the time anyway. :-) Steve Orr -Original Message- Sent: Friday, June 06, 2003 3:50 PM To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L Importance: High I wasn't supposed to be able to review the items that are checked for performance (it's a "confidential" list) but one of the dbas let me see it... RE: HP OpenView
I tried monitoring some of my databases with it. The interface was crappy. But management insisted we use it since we pay for it. Eventually, found it much easier to write my own unix scripts and send all alerts and warnings to a file on a server, which is then monitored by Openview. This tool is mostly used by SA's on HP-UX platforms and not DBA's. Now HP have integrated it with Oracle Enterprise Manager to consolidate the functionality. Re: HP OpenView
OV was the monitoring tool of choice (sysadmins made the decision, not dbas) for the databases at my last company. In checking all the events to monitor, I only found about 10 that were useful. The other ones were heavy on the ratio angle and had nothing on wait events. I also found the monitoring interface ungainly and difficult to use. If an alert was presented, we had to go to another product or login to the db to examine it in depth or fix it. I would have preferred to use Enterprise Manager since I could do almost everything I needed to do in one window. -- Daniel W.
