Hi all,

I was wondering if any one out here knows if there is a good list (mailing list) for discussing MS Access problems. I am specifically looking for migrating/converting large Access database into Oracle database. I need to know what will be the steps to convert such a database into an Oracle database. Also need to learn Access from start.

Please reply fast, I need to dive into this one.

Thanks and Regards,

You may want to look at the Oracle Migration workbench.
http://otn.oracle.com/tech/migration/workbench/index.html
http://otn.oracle.com/tech/migration/workbench/index.html
I don't know if the slides are still available but there was a presentation
at IOUG Live! 2002 titled Migrating a Microsoft Access Database to Oracle
-- Pain Free by Debbie Pennell which gave a brief overview of the process.

Thanks guys, for pointing to the right place for Access issues.

Has some one got a document which you may have written for performing a
conversion/migration from Access to Oracle, or for that matter any
conversion. I want to look in the document, as to what issues are to be
dealt with, what is the change that needs to take place in the new system,
what is the actual thing in access and what is the desired effect going to
be in Oracle. I know there will be different things customized for your
company's case, but I want to just see how the whole document is structured,
and therefore get a good idea as to what the conversion process will entail.

You can write me direct at:-

Oracle has a product called Migration Workbench that converts various
other db's to Oracle. Can't vouch for it performance, never having used

The workbench itself is quite useful - funnily enough, as much for the manual as for
the product itself. It gives a fairly good run-down to approaching migration, which
can be applied to just about any DB. The only gotchas I encountered with the
workbench are its picky requirements for exact installer versions, etc. (nothing new
there for Oracle).

If all of the tables are remotely linked tables then it should not be too bad.

RE: MS Access as a front-end to Oracle DB

2003-06-22 Thread Mark Richard

I have had some recent exposure to Access - people asking me to investigate
why their query runs for so long. I can understand that if one table in
the query is local then Access has to pretty much work locally, but I have
been terribly surprised at how it approaches multi-table queries some time.

I've seen it work on a single table at a time and then pass a bind variable
to the next table to simulate a join. The example I was looking at most
recently turned one query into 80,000 queries as a result - just what
production needs when it's busy already. My best guess is that Access
see's foreign tables as individual foreign tables. Perhaps it doesn't
worry about where the foreign tables come from and therefore treats them
all as individual entities? Anyway, that's just a guess as to why Access
would break a simple join into two queries.

Re: MS Access as a front-end to Oracle DB

2003-06-20 Thread Rodd Holman
I haven't worked with MSAccess to Oracle stuff lately, but
it used to be that the ODBC stuff pulled A LOT of background crap in
addition to what was needed for the query. And, yes, Access did a lot
of the processing locally. The way I got around this was that I either
used passthrough queries (Access takes the query typed as is and sends
it to the server for processing) or I used Oracle Objects for OLE.
Using OO4OLE you can use VBA to specifiy more explicityly what you want
the server to do for you. It opens up the full power of Oracle under
the Microsoft Office/VB interface. Check the docs on OO4OLE. It's a
very nice toolset when working with MSOffice apps.

RE: MS Access 97 to Oracle 8.1.7 Scheduler

2003-06-09 Thread Pardee, Roy E
You can specify the name of a macro for msaccess to run on startup w/the /x
parameter of the msaccess executable. That macro can do a RunCode action to
run a VBA procedure that you specify (which is where you can do your data
loading) followed by an Exit action to shut down msaccess. IIRC, you can
schedule a command like:

   c:\program files\microsoft office\office\1033\msaccess.exe path to
the msaccess db file /x macLoadDataIntoOracle

Alternatively, you can write a windows scripting host script that will build
that command line up for you (after e.g., verifying that the db file
msaccess executable are present, maybe doing some logging, etc.) and then
schedule that.

Hi Bob,

I don't know if its possible to do it by those means, but it is
definitely possible, using heterogeneous services to have Oracle pull
the data from Access over a database link. You could schedule that
through the Oracle scheduler, or have MS scheduler execute a sql script.

Search on Metalink for 'Heterogenous Services'. The documents there
describe how to setup a dblink to an MS Access database.

Can someone tell me where to start to find out how to access an MS
Access
table from Oracle. Basically what I want to do is be connected to an
Oracle
database in SQL*Plus and execute a query against an MS-Access table. Is
this possible?

Thanks,
Jeff

Re: MS Access migration to oracle

2002-02-28 Thread Igor Neyman

If VB code was connecting to Access db through ODBC datasource, just modify
this this datasource (or delete/create new one with the same name) to use
Oracle ODBC driver (instead of ACCESS ODBC driver) and point them to the
entry in tnsnames, which you create for them to use.
Still, probably they will have to make some modifications in their code,
when connecting to the db, to provide logon/password information. I don't
think it's possible to specify password, when configuring ODBC datasource.

I've been told to migrate one MS-Access 97 database to oracle. Oracle
 Migration Workbench did the
trick in an extremely clean, quick and complete way. Tables are created,
populated with data and it is
now when the problem starts. The people that were using this Access
database were doing so by means
of an ancient VB piece of ... code and they don't want or they don't know
to
adjust it. They expect the program
to somehow find the new Oracle 8.1.7.3 instance and continue to work as
it
did before. I created a new access database
containing ODBC links to the Oracle tables, but the program is complaining
that the links are read only. Is there any way
in this world or beyond to make these tables writable? I'm inclined to
tell
them that they should do some coding, which is
very likely to make them go back to Access.

RE: MS Access migration to oracle

2002-02-28 Thread Post, Ethan

Check the ODBC configuration in Control Panel and make sure the connection
is not set to read only. If you have primary keys on the tables access
should be capable of seeing these and thus will allow updates to the table.
If not you should be prompted to supply the key columns from a list of
columns when you attach to the table. Other than that I would suggest you
update the ODBC drivers.

It's just not Access developers. I was handed an old Oracle db where less than half of

 Li,
In reality Access does have a file size limit, but I believe it
 is much
lower than 1GB. Regrettably there is no way around it, except as
 Kevin stated
to use a pass through query to Oracle. One should understand that
 Access is
designed as a single user system that gets bastardized into multi
 user
applications with a lot of resulting trouble.

Li,

1GB
for Access would be huge...and cause very poor performance. The only way
to overcome the size limitation is to upgrade to a real database...preferably
Oracle, but that SQL Server thing would work as well for a DB that
size.

Li,

I haven't worked with MS Access, but I did work on a
few projects converting MS Access application to
Oracle application exactly because MS Access can't
handle large amounts of data. The anser to you
question may very well be - move to Oracle (or any
other more powerful tool)

RE: MS access

2001-05-24 Thread Norrell, Brian

Officially there is no max, but realistically, as you
get close to a gig you start having serious issues. MAJOR performance
problems, increased crashes, a nightmare. Time to consider something more
robust, and honestly BLASPHEMY SQLServer is probably the way to go
_BLASPHEMY.The syntax matches up better so there are fewer
(almost no) issues porting code that runs against Access to SQLServer, where
there can be some issues moving to Oracle.
