Re: Meaning of V$WAITSTAT statistics

2001-10-03 Thread Peter Gram

Hi all

Sorry for interrupting this thread !

I'm sorry to say that it is not possible to answer since time_statistics
= false and there for the time column is zero. So we know that this db
has waited on
(data block 335274, segment header 52,undo header 322 and undo block
419) these different thing but we don't know for how long time and
therefor we don't know if it is a problem ! Turn on time_statistics on
the db and see what the wait time is then you might find that you have a
problem or not

if it's not broken don't fix it

Re: Meaning of V$WAITSTAT statistics

2001-10-02 Thread Greg Moore

> The Oracle 8i Reference manual Appendix A

While it describes the wait events, it doesn't tell you which ones you can
safely ignore when using waits for tuning.

Even if you know which ones to focus on, the descriptions are pretty
inadequate. We are informed that a "db file sequential read" means the
session is waiting "while a sequential read from the database is being
performed." On the other hand, a "db file scattered read" is "similar to db
file sequential read, except that a session is reading multiple data
blocks."

Worse, suppose one of these two waits is twice as significant in my database
than the other. Does that mean I have a problem and should start using the
wait interface methodologies to track down the SQL that's causing the wait
event to be high? Or is it normal that in a well tuned database that the
one will be higher than the other by a factor of two? Or in fact is it
typical in a well tuned database that the one that appears to be the least
significant should actually be much lower, so I should focus on that? Or is
there really no such thing as a typical profile for a well tuned database,
because various wait events might be high on your system and low on mine
simply because of the way they're used, so no one really has any idea what
to focus on at any given time?

Mladen et al,

The Oracle 8i Reference manual Appendix A describes the very same wait
events (seems to have been lifted straight-away from Anjo Kolk's paper,
modified for 8i and gaps filled in). Look at App C for Statistics
descriptions.

This is a good time to annouce a new acronym - RRTFM (Re-Read The Fine
Manual)!

Well, the only real paper about that was written by Anjo Kolk in Jurassic

and it describes all wait events in V7. I am not aware of any updates for

Second thing to do is to go to Steve Adams's Ixora site enter the event name
in
the search engine an read the explanation.

Anyone know where I can find a list of the v$sysstat, v$system_event and
v$session_wait items I can safely ignore?

Hello

Can you please clarify the relation
between 'save undo headers' and Billy Graham.

If making a joke out of what is 'unplatable'
or 'inconvenient' to believe is comforting you
 by all means go ahead.

Save undo is when a tablespace has undo information, but is currently
offline.

RE: Meaning of V$WAITSTAT statistics

2001-10-02 Thread Gogala, Mladen

Save undo headers are made for the Billy Graham's database only. Just
kidding.
The "save undo headers" refer to the deferred rollback segment, which are
created if a tablespace goes offline with uncommitted transactions. Those
deferred rollback segments are created in the tablespace "SYSTEM" and there
is
no way of changing that (allegedly, some magic happens if the default
tablespace
is changed for the user 'SYS', but I've never tested that. It might be a
rumor).
