RE: Microsoft XP

2001-08-27 Thread Boivin, Patrice J

Re. WindowsXP, there is a little debate going on between a security analyst
and Microsoft.

http://grc.com/dos/sockettome.htm

Microsoft posted a response on their web site, on the security page.

I don't know who is right in all this.

Has anyone heard of all the troubles that the new version of
Microsoft is
having getting released ??

One of the ugliest things I see is their new licensing scheme. They
make
sure you are using it only on a specific machine by having its
functionality
based on hardware items on your system. This configuration has to
be
registered either by phone or by internet about a month after it is
installed or everything stops working. If you change something big,
like a
Network Card or cpu chip, your system will not boot because it
thinks you
have installed it on a different machine.

Anyone have options on the new XP ?

And I assure you, you are not alone. People who are likely to go for newer
operating systems are the ones who would also keep upgrading their systems'
hardware - so Microsoft's policy is going to raise more than eyebrows...
As for Windows XP, the look and feel is just awesome - the look has been
definitely borrowed from Linux Desktops... the folder icons are exactly the
same...

The best part is, all of the drives are on there own channel, it's a very
nice machine and one heck of an improvement over my last K6II/550, man that
thing overheated left and right!! The best part is just how cheap the AMD's
are, only 120 for the processor..whoo hooo!!

RE: Microsoft XP

2001-08-24 Thread Sinha, Shashank (MED, TCS)

It is insane!! How can you expect someone to NOT upgrade?
Just a year back, it was a BIG configuration if you had 32 MB RAM, and 2
Gig drive.
Now, they have these 60Gig hard drives, and the newer OS's and
application really hog space like they assume you have 20+ drive. And 32
MB RAM? Many apps would laugh in its face.
Does Microsoft assume that we won't be moving on to these in a year if
not in the next six months??? And that would mean re-licensing XP every
time I moved from 64 -> 128--> 256RAM???

Beware of upgrading 98 to 2k. OS works fine, but games don't work
anymore
:(. I had to restore back to 98. Thats what you get when you pirate
games,
no updates :)

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 08/23/01 06:58PM >>>
I have not seen XP myself but a co-worker likes it. He was running
2000, which is what I run. What issues did you have installing W2K?
It was pretty straight forward. The only issue I had was my motherboard
is a RAID board and I had to use the drivers supplied. I keep going
past the section where they were prompting me to switch to the a: drive
without noticing a couple of times before I noticed.

You can also upgrade 98 with 2000. I did a couple of machines at the
office
with no issues whatsoever. Just make sure you got drivers for 2000
before hand since you computer is new.

I don't know what other people will say but so far its been very stable
for me, both at work and home.

You
know, I just built myself a sweet monstosity of a machine at home. I
installed Windows 98 because I have it and it was easier than figuring
out
how to install win2k. Now I am so frustrated with the instability of it
that I am almost depressed. Oh what to do.

Beware of upgrading 98 to 2k. OS works fine, but games don't work anymore
:(. I had to restore back to 98. Thats what you get when you pirate games,
no updates :)

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 08/23/01 06:58PM >>>

I did a couple of machines at the office
with no issues whatsoever. Just make sure you got drivers for 2000
before hand since you computer is new.

I don't know what other people will say but so far its been very stable
for me, both at work and home.

Has anyone heard of all the troubles that the new version of Microsoft is
having getting released ??

One of the ugliest things I see is their new licensing scheme. They make
sure you are using it only on a specific machine by having its functionality
based on hardware items on your system. This configuration has to be
registered either by phone or by internet about a month after it is
installed or everything stops working. If you change something big, like a
Network Card or cpu chip, your system will not boot because it thinks you
have installed it on a different machine.

Anyone have options on the new XP ?

Kevin,

My advice would be to type:

C:\>format c:\

Then install Win2K from the outset! The install is painless, and the O/S is
a HELL of a lot more stable. Don't bother upgrading from 98 -> 2000, as you
*can* get software driver problems etc.

Now I also know (like me) you're a gamer, (is this why you went for 98
also?), and Win2K gets some bad press in this world too - I can
categorically state that given a stable machine, and provided you monitor
what is installed on your system, and don't install crappy apps, the system
will run sweet as a nut!

Go on, take the plunge!!

Mark

RE: Microsoft XP

2001-08-24 Thread Christopher Spence

One thing I noticed, M$ will not allow you to do redundancy raid (1, 5, 0+1)
in Windows Professsional. It will fail the install. You can only seem to
use Raid 0 (even hardware raid contorllers) some how it figures this out and
forces you to use server. Sucks if you ask me.

I have not seen XP myself but a co-worker likes it. He was running 2000,
which is what I run. What issues did you have installing W2K? It was pretty
straight forward. The only issue I had was my motherboard is a RAID board
and I had to use the drivers supplied. I keep going
past the section where they were prompting me to switch to the a: drive
without noticing a couple of times before I noticed.

You can also upgrade 98 with 2000. I did a couple of machines at the office
with no issues whatsoever. Just make sure you got drivers for 2000 before
hand since you computer is new.

I don't know what other people will say but so far its been very stable for
me, both at work and home.

well screw that!! They can keep XP, I am staying away from it now!! You
know, I just built myself a sweet monstosity of a machine at home. I
installed Windows 98 because I have it and it was easier than figuring out
how to install win2k. Now I am so frustrated with the instability of it

Mark,
Like I said it wasn't that I couldn't install it, I just wasn't sure where
the drivers were. I know it's a lot more stable, but I heard the same
things you stated. I am a gamer and I heard it doesn't get along so well
with some games drivers etc. I am going to have to do it though, with this
new machine it's like I have a Ferrari with a toyota tercel engine in it:)

Kimberly,
Don't get me wrong, I have 2k on a couple of machines and it is very stable
compared to 98 and NT. Problem is the motherboard I purchased has a Promise
ATA100 controller on the board, and I would have had to had installed the
drivers before installation. However, I wasn't sure where they were and
didn't feel like looking for them. Also, some programs, especially games
with opengl and direct x and stuff like that still don't like 2k. I believe
down the road I'll wind up installing it.

Ahh of course you are right - :P I didn't elaborate (slaps my own wrist :)

If this is the case - insert your boot disk (I'm not sure whether you would
want the 98 or 2000 one at this stage though, as I've never wiped and
upgraded along this path), and use the following:

C:\>format c: /s

Then insert a LINUX CD.. lol.. no I'm not a UNIX bigot..

RE: Microsoft XP

2001-08-24 Thread Mark Leith

Go on, take the plunge!!

well screw that!! They can keep XP, I am staying away from it now!! You
know, I just built myself a sweet monstosity of a machine at home. I
installed Windows 98 because I have it and it was easier than figuring out
how to install win2k. Now I am so frustrated with the instability of it
that I am almost depressed. Oh what to do.

RE: Microsoft XP

2001-08-23 Thread Kimberly Smith

I have not seen XP myself but a co-worker likes it. He was running
2000, which is what I run. What issues did you have installing W2K?
It was pretty straight forward. The only issue I had was my motherboard
is a RAID board and I had to use the drivers supplied. I keep going
past the section where they were prompting me to switch to the a: drive
without noticing a couple of times before I noticed.

You can also upgrade 98 with 2000. I did a couple of machines at the office
with no issues whatsoever. Just make sure you got drivers for 2000
before hand since you computer is new.

I don't know what other people will say but so far its been very stable
for me, both at work and home.

RE: Microsoft XP

2001-08-23 Thread

More importantly to this ( I feel ) is the new raw sockets ability in
windows XP. I don't know how many have seen this but take a look at the DOS
pages on Gibson Research - http://grc.com/dos/intro.htm
With particular reference to the pages regarding how the raw stack will
allow 'hackers' to completely spoof the identity of the machines involved in
(D)DoS.
http://grc.com/dos/xpsummary.htm

there's my two cents :)

Michael.

RE: Microsoft XP

2001-08-23 Thread Jamadagni, Rajendra

Well have a look at http://www.licenturion.com they almost broke how it
works and they also have a demo program that would simulate it. This logic
applies to an earlier release, so may not be applicable to final release,
but the technical description is very interesting. Pretty sleek system, it
basically *knows* about your system, but only the HW aspect, not the SW
aspect.
