You can walk in the first accounting firm and ask them to set
up a limited company for you. costs around $350. As far as I can
remember (1996.) the best jobs available were in the telco country,
around Bishopsgate/ London Bridge/ Broadgate Center area and they
used to work with a few body shops. One that I have decent experience
with was called Oric. Things have probably changed since then.
Other then that, London is beautiful town, even if they are driving
on the wrong side of the road.
One last thing: do you know what is the difference between an Aussie
and a 747? It is that 747 stops whining at Heathrow.

It works both ways. My english agent phoned me and
told me she was heading out to Oz for a couple of

intended going around the continent scooting from

I have visions of skeletal remains next to a scooter

Thanks to everyone for the feedback - very useful. John, Sydney's pretty

As it stands, it looks like I'll be getting a permanent position wearing my

RE: Moving to UK - what are Oracle contracts like?

2002-08-16 Thread Bishop Lewis

Grant,

Well good luck. Things are still tight here in the UK (see a recent post
about FTV's) and there are many contractors on the bench. A recent group
forum topic touched on the fact that 35% of new signers-on (the dole) are
from IT.

Last year I had 2 stints of 6 weeks between contracts and consider myself
fortunate that it wasn't longer. It was great spending 3 months with the
family but it sure did eat into the savings. Right now, there is more work
OUTSIDE of London in areas such as the Midlands, Birmingham and York as well
as quite a bit on mainland Europe.

If you plan to come to London looking for a contract prepare yourself.

2002-08-16 Thread Bishop Lewis

Apologies, didn't actually answer your original questions :-

what structure most contractors are employed under. Do people work
as sole traders, set up their own plc, work for a body shop,

Most run their own limited companies as directors and use a mixture of
wages, dividends and expenses. Some contractors use umbrella companies which
usually charge anywhere between 4-10% of invoices as charges and offer
varying levels of expense allowment etc... Over here you HAVE to work
through a limited company of some sort which eliminates the sole-trader
aspect - it can be yours or someone else's limited company.

There seems to be more permanent DBA work here at the moment - have you
considered that?

Grant,
I agree with Lewis, things are tight here. Very hard to find work and you
have to compete hard on rate to have a chance.
You have to work as a ltd company - does not cost much to set up , or use an
umbrella company.
I would recommend joing the Professional Contractors Group
(http://www.pcgroup.org.uk/) if you are considering contracting.
The insurance is worthwhile but the discussion forums (general, ir35
matters, technical, commercial, accounting) etc can be very useful.

Conversely I am thinking about Australia (Sydney) long-term - why are you

RE: Moving to UK - what are Oracle contracts like?

2002-08-16 Thread Gogala, Mladen

You can walk in the first accounting firm and ask them to set
up a limited company for you. costs around $350. As far as I can
remember (1996.) the best jobs available were in the telco country,
around Bishopsgate/ London Bridge/ Broadgate Center area and they
used to work with a few body shops. One that I have decent experience
with was called Oric. Things have probably changed since then.
Other then that, London is beautiful town, even if they are driving
on the wrong side of the road.
One last thing: do you know what is the difference between an Aussie
and a 747? It is that 747 stops whining at Heathrow.

Yes,
There aren't many positions cropping up! Check www.jobserve.co.uk

I now have a permanent job after my contract was not renewed last
month. I didn't consider it a preference but under the circumstances it's a
whole lot better than nothing.

Best wishes to those contracting and good luck to anyone in-between jobs.

Good Luck Fuzzy!

Very sorry about OT post - please feel free to flame/respond to me
 personally.

I'm moving to the UK, and wonder what structure most contractors are
employed under. I've read about IR35 (pretty much the same as the
alienation of income rule here is Aus). Do people work as sole
traders,
set up their own plc, work for a body shop, or some combination of the
 above?

Apologies again for the bandwidth consumption.

RE: Moving to UK - what are Oracle contracts like?

2002-08-16 Thread Suhen Pather

John,

The contracting market here in Sydney is really slow as well.
The rates have dropped substantially.

There are just a few permanent Oracle DBA jobs but they don't pay that well.
Lots of them ask for very specific skills.

I guess it is the employers market right now to get the best for less.
I noticed a few more SQL Server jobs recently.

Check out www.seek.com.au
  www.mycareer.com.au
  www.jobnet.com.au
  www.monster.com.au
  www.careerone.com.au

Regards
Suhen

Grant,
I agree with Lewis, things are tight here.

Conversely I am thinking about Australia (Sydney) long-term - why are you
leaving there and coming to sunny England?

John
