Of the 87 presentations by non-Oracle employees, how many are by third party
software vendors who use this outline:

(1) Describe serious problem
(2) Present partial solution (using SQL, etc.) that won't solve problem, so
it's of no help to you.
(3) End by showing how their product will solve problem.

Dang, and I know how to jitterbug :)

there are some presentations I want to be at... Steve Adams, Cary Milsap,
Craig Shallahamer, Gaja, Jeremiah... and others I can't remember.

but I look at it this way. 85 is a lot easier to find time to get to than
287 :)

RE: OOW presentations

2001-09-07 Thread Jack C. Applewhite

Rachel,

Feelings of cynicism with regards to anything Oracle are usually accurate.
;-)

I presented at OOW '98 and found the same situation. The Oracle
presentations I got into were pretty much marketing. The non-Oracle
presentations were usually (not always) in the smallest rooms and were
frequently packed by the time I got there.

I ended up attending the Designer 2.x hands-on workshop 4 times, ignoring
the multimedia presentation and playing around with Designer. That was kind
of enlightening. Dancing to Big Bad Voodoo Daddy at the "big bash" was fun,
except hardly any of the Geek Girls there knew how to Jitterbug.

However, all in all, it wasn't worth the trip. That was my last OOW.

RE: OOW Presentations

2001-08-09 Thread Post, Ethan

FYI all of my resources are freely available if any of you should so decide
to publish your materials on the web. I am working on some code now that
will take material from an Outlook folder structure and build a very cool
interface out of it using the Morton Javascript Treeview control. It is
primarily for training. Most of the tools you need to create content you
already have. The audience you have the potential for reaching using this
method is much larger than the OOW audience since many folks can never make
it to OOW.

I think it would be cool if we had our own little Oracle-L Open World event,
all of the material would be published on a specific date in the future on
the web, we would have plenty of peer review before it is published. It
would be a great way to promote the Oracle-L list and maybe motivate others
to create content.

You can see a screenshot of a sample interface I am building at
http://www.freetechnicaltraining.com/sample.gif. Let me know if I can help.

Thanks,
Ethan

RE: OOW presentations

2001-08-08 Thread Rachel Carmichael

they are likely to show up somewhere else --- like IOUG :) or local user
groups.

Good presentations eventually make it out to the public.

RE: OOW presentations

2001-08-08 Thread JOE TESTA

i think part of the issue is(and i've done this in the past),
the white paper and slides are not written until acceptance, so all there is for
some people is an abstract.

now for IOUG2002, you have to submit an outline, so
practically the whole thing is done(and i've submitted my first abstract,
woohoo, now off to query flashback) :)

RE: OOW presentations

2001-08-08 Thread Norwood Bradly A

Wouldn't those rejects constitute a rich source of material, Rachel, rather
like the Gnostic Gospels of Oracle?

It would be nice if they could be made available through this site, or a new
site we could call LarrysRejects.com site??

RE: OOW presentations

2001-08-08 Thread Carle, William T (Bill), NLCIO

I wonder how they decide whose presentation is chosen. There are a lot of
people you can count on for a good presentation (like Rachel) and I like to
go to those. Of course, it looks like I probably won't get to go this year
anyway. So much for adding to the t-shirt collection.
