I used to have a Spectrum +2? One of the little keyboards with rubber keys
and a tape drive! Still have it in the loft at my parents with all the
original games too! Damn how I used to love sitting in front of a screen
blinking red/blue/green colours at me, screaming like a drowning cat while
it was loading.

I must dig that out for a nostalgia trip! LOL.. Although I am more of a die
hard fan of high tech games though!! Quake, Half Life (Counterstrike)..

2001-04-05 Thread Boivin, Patrice J

I have a copy of PC Magazine volume 1, number 1 in my bookcase at home.

The only thing is we cut out a coupon that was on the inside of the back
cover, so there is a corner missing. The one will all those wooden puppets
standing on the computer, and Charlie Chaplin.

I remember standing at CompuCentre and the sales person telling me assembly
language for the IBM PC was going to be really tough because of "shadowed"
memory -- I think she meant segmented memory...

Sinclair was a brand of personal computers that came out in the UK about 20
years ago,
If memory serves , they started of with the ZX 81 which had a whole 1K of
memory.

Their next offering was the Spectrum 16K followed by the 48K. with rubber
keys and programmable in basic.
I remember back in the early 80's I got one for my 14th birthday and that
set me on the downward spiral to
where I am now :-) as a dba

they subsequently went bust, and I still have that Spectrum 48K after
nearly 20 years.
You can get emulaters for it on the PC.

Any more spectrum owners out there that want to admit to it ?

2001-04-04 Thread Dasko, Dan

In 1982ish, Dad brought home a used TRS-80 mod III with 16k ram and a tape
drive. Started a downward spiral. I tried to get out, no I really did.
Got a degree in mathematics instead of CompSci. Joined the Air Force as an
aircraft maintenance officer. But alas, it didn't last. I spent my time
developing Excel stuff with VBA and a database with Access. I got out and
took a job as a Y2K project lead(hated it hated it hated it). Then jumped
into Oracle on Unix from DB2 on VMS and am as happy as a clam.

My background is on the hardware end of MainFrames,
so I borrowed a Logic Analyzer from Work, hooked it up,

 what fun that was.

Then we got the TIMEX version of the Spectrum with a monitor,
but it was such a pain with the Audio tape Input/output.
Gave up on it when TIMEX stopped support on it.

To this day my roommate will not buy or use another TIMEX product.

Me too! But I kept comparing the different brands: ZX spectrum, Tandy, Texas

But I could not expand it since it was very expensive for me to buy any of

And I thought it was an old oil company. Their gas station symbol was a
dinosaur (not to be confused with "put a tiger in your tank"). I vaguely
recall the Sinclair exhibit at the 1967 World's Fair, and I still have a
blue plastic model of one of their dinosaurs.

2001-04-04 Thread Weaver, Walt

Well, at the risk of sounding like a weirdo, I consider this a job, not a
lifestyle. I didn't get a home computer until I had to have one to log in to
work from home.

I remember looking at those Sinclairs, couldn't figure out how one of'em
could possibly be useful. Bought a new pair of skis instead.

One of the RD guys says he has a prett good collection of
this kind of early stuff from the PC industry, he says that
there aren't much of any good museums of PC technology (yet).
At least for historical interest reasons, it might be worth
holding onto, especially if you have something that is rare,
or otherwise a bit out of the mainstream.

RE: OT : Sinclair was RE: Metalink Again

2001-04-04 Thread Steve Orr

I got a Commodore VIC20. Icky. You could only program in BASIC but you could
store stuff on a regular audio cassette tape. You didn't need a monitor
because you hooked it up to your TV... however you could probably learn more
about computer science by just watching TV. ;-)

A year later I went to work for Fujitsu Microelectronics. They somehow
thought they could set the standard in this fledgling PC industry. They
first started with a Z80 chip and they had a pretty good machine running CPM
with a C compiler. (Now CPM was an O/S!) I used that PC to do my homework
for my Intro to C Programming night class at the community college. Soon
after that came the IBM PC and Fujitsu actually had an early PC clone that
ran MS-DOS. Trouble was it wasn't a "compatible" MS-DOS so you couldn't run
Lotus 123. But SuperCalc worked OK. Go figure. At the same time one of their
largest customers was a small startup company to which they sold gobs of
memory chips. It was a huge financial risk but this small startup kept
paying on time so they kept shipping them more memory. What was the name of
that risky small startup? Oh yeah, it was a weird name... "Compaq." The rest
is history.

And now you know "the rest of the story."
