Don't do it.
You should try to avoid "paging".

will oracle when allocating shared memory space take
virtual memory into consideration or only real memory

Re: SGA question

2003-07-15 Thread Tanel Poder
Hi!

I believe that you can allocate more virtual memory to Oracle than you got
physical. Never cared enough to try, though.
There's a init.ora parameter LOCK_SGA, if you set it to true, then Oracle
tries to hard lock all pages to physical memory, in that case you would
probably get error on startup.

I believe that the answer is, as of 9i, it depends.

Generally speaking yes you can over allocate memory and kill your
instance performance.
As of 9i the parameter LOCK_SGA enforces that the SGA is kept in real
memory, presumably killing startup if sufficient real memory is
unavailable.

Re: SGA QUESTION

2001-06-23 Thread Jared Still

Hoo boy! That's a pretty healthy SGA you got there.

Why do you think you need to dedicate that much RAM
to your SGA?

Why not start with something more reasonable, like say,
200 meg for shared pool and 200 more for the database
buffers?

A large shared pool can actually impede performance.

Jared,

If he has 8GB of memory, why not allocate 4GB to the data buffer instead of
200MB? I realize simply adding memory is not the solution for fixing a
poorly tuned database, but on the other hand, if you have a lot of memory
why not use it?

Because it my just be a waste of memory.

Really, he hasn't given any information about his database, number
of users, type of queries, etc.

So I am guessing at a size, and using up 4 gig for data base block
buffers is a *LOT* of memory that would probably be more useful
elsewhere.

RE: SGA QUESTION

And there is no formula for setting Log Buffers based on the Size of the
SGA.
What you have got is okay.
I would suggest monitoring v$system_event for log buffer space wait event,
and increase log buffer size if there are consistent waits for this event.

RE: SGA QUESTION

2001-06-25 Thread Nikolay Kumanov

Under some circumstances (which look scary to me) it is valid
combination. See

http://www.microsoft.com/HWDEV/PAE/default.htm

and "Oracle8i Support for Very Large Memory (VLM) Configurations" in the
release notes for 8.1.7 on WinNT.

Whether it is GOOD combination, I cannot tell. May be under the
influence of good doses of Laphroaig and Rachel's chocolate mousse cake
I could be inclined to try it.

Who
knows.

Perhaps your database is 100K perhaps it is 1000Pb.
Perhaps it is DSS, DW, or even OLTP.

I
would say use a 8Gb sga and buy more memory, should be perfect for what your
trying to do.

Hi all,

I don't remember the limit, but there *is* an upper limit on the amount of
memory that a single process can address in NT (was it 2Gb?). Since the
architecture of Oracle on NT is a single-process-multi-threaded one, and all
of the SGA and PGA is actually within this process space, I believe that you
may be bumping this upper limit

Maybe someone with a deeper understanding of NT can chip in (Anita?)

Hello,
The upper limit for a server running NT is 2gb, because usually only 4gb of
memory can be installed. However, I believe that with the patch installed,
enabling NT to go above 4gb of ram, it will also increase the upper limit.

My database will be growing 20 GB per
year.
Anyway . Forget it .
Thank you All.

Perhaps your database is 100K perhaps it is 1000Pb.
Perhaps it is DSS, DW, or even OLTP.

  I
would say use a 8Gb sga and buy more memory, should be perfect for what your
  trying to do.

ORACLE-LSubject: SGA QUESTION
Hi GURUS,I HAVE A QUESTION.

I will newly create a database and I have 8 GB
RAM.

I will create my SGA as 1 GB .  IS it
a good Idea?
I see that there is a variable size for
the SGA , How can I arrange that?
How much must be log buffers for a 1GB
SGA?
Thanks .

RE: SGA QUESTION

2001-06-26 Thread A. Bardeen

Kevin and John,

The original limit was 2GB on NT, but since service
pack 3 and above this can be extended to 3GB by
changing a few settings. There is also a special
driver that can be obtained to allow access up to 8GB.
I have never tried this driver since I don't have any
boxes with > 4GB, but I suspect that versions prior to
8i might have problems since they were released before
this driver was. I

As with most memory issues on NT related to Oracle, I
find the following docs invaluable:

Note: 46053.1 "Windows NT Memory Architecture
Overview"
Note: 46001.1 "Oracle Database and the Windows NT
memory architecture, Technical Bulletin"

I'm sure these restrictions have been removed or at
least greatly enlarged in Win2K.

HTH,

No one said this is a poorly performing system, as it isn't
even built yet.

Allocating 50% of your memory may be possible, but also may be a
bad idea, it really depends on the system, which we know nothing
about other than it has 8 gig of memory.

If it's a data warehouse, it's probably a bad idea. There's usually
a lot of full tables scans and little need for a large data block
buffer size or a large shared pool.

On a DW though, there is a need for a lot of system memory to satisfy
the parallel processes and sort_area_size requirements.

If it's OLTP, it really depends on the # of users and the application,
as well as considerations such as MTS, etc.
