Re: Unix root account remote access
Well... if you just want to be able to login one time, and then restrict the root account... try this: comment this line: #CONSOLE=/dev/console on the file: /etc/default/login after that, you can now login to your machine remotely, but I'd recommend you: after get logged in, uncomment again the line to continue restricting the access remotely. Of course, the steps need to be done at console! :-) HTH JL --- M.Godlewski [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: List, I want to install Oracle on a UNIX system no sys admin on board yet, so I get to set up the system with the Oracle account etc. Unfortunately, I can not log into the root account remotely. RE: Unix root account remote access
That would work. I have done that in the past, by hanging a modem to the Console RS-232 port and dialing in. Loaded complete AIX 3.2.5, and Oracle 6.x from my office in Irving TX, while the server was in Everglades, FL. Worked fine, except it was a bit slow.. There was no GUI and Java stuff in that Oracle Installer ;) - Kirti --- Stephen Lee [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: One possibility -- probably a slim possibility: If the remote site can hook up a console server to the box, then you connect to the console server, and it will be like you are right there at the console ... RE: Unix root account remote access
I don't know if the following applies to all varieties of unix... Not being able to telnet in directly as root is just default behaviour. This could be changed...but some would say this is a bad idea. There must be someone at the server end with root access. In order for your account to be able to su, your account must be in the system group in /etc/group (on the host or via NIS). Why do not you login as you and then login as root? It is for your protection that nobody should be able to remote login from outside and any one who is login as root can be monitored.
