RE: Virus.

2003-04-02 Thread April Wells

I got the one that Craig sent out the notice on.

from Chris as well but there WAS an attachment... AvrilLavinge.exe
I sent it to our help desk, who scanned the attachment and it came back
clean, so "we" are dismissing it... but it did give me great pause because
there was an attachment.

Just had a virus come in to the list via [EMAIL PROTECTED] (who
I've copied directly, so "heads up Chris" ;)).

The virus is WORM_LIRVA.A, I didn't get infected (thankfully attachements
are stripped).. More details about the worm can be found here:

RE: Virus.

2003-04-02 Thread Mark Leith
Yes, the attachment will still be there, but I think (though I didn't try
it) if you open it with a text editor it will just have some "Binary
attachments are not allowed [EMAIL PROTECTED]" type message, as this
happens with pdf's etc. as well.

The only attachments that are legible on this list AFAIK are .sql files, all
others get stripped as above..

Lerone - This was discussed awhile back, so you may want to search the

proposed, to avoid scanning the large Oracle dbf files because you are
wasting a lot of your system resource since dbf files aren't executed they

perusing the archives of the list i've gotten the impression that virus
packages are frowned on; it seems that the endorsed methodology is the
"restricted-access-purely-this-solution" approach.

by that, the server *only* runs oracle and is configured to only allow
access to that resource.

we are running a development box with oracle and mcafee virus shield,
excluding the oracle directory from scanning.

not knowing what we will need to administer these remotely, applying
restrictions, disabling shares and ports might be a step too far. but it's
something we may want to consider.

what were mentioned as detractions to installing a virus package was:
-scanning of oracle files brings the server to it's knees
-virus package may erroneously identify an oracle related file as infected,
the quarantine or deletion of said file could cripple your solution

my question is... does this still hold true? do any of you run oracle w/ a
virus package? if so what and how?

i'm looking for real world experiences, the development box we have is
isolated so i have no real world metrics.

for now our decision is to install a virus package and exclude
oracle-related--questionable files, like .DBFs and .CTLs...

good bad other?

TIA, hopefully i'm not beating a dead horse

Lerone - This was discussed awhile back, so you may want to search the
archives. As I recall, the advice was pretty much along the lines you have
proposed, to avoid scanning the large Oracle dbf files because you are
wasting a lot of your system resource since dbf files aren't executed they
won't infect your system, even if a virus was there.

I think I must have something confused here.

If this list removes attachments to avoid viruses, how does a virus in
an attachment come through the list?

I would think that it might be sent out directly. This makes some
sense as it seems that not everyone is receiving the same
attachment. At this point I haven't received any but since I
frequently receive messages out of order that does prove anything.

RE: virus question

2001-06-27 Thread lhoska

I think it might've been send directly because I did not receive any of the
infected e-mails from that individual. Again I just joined the list
recently. To refresh your memory, I also don't receive as many recruitment
adds as you guys do. So, some people might've got a hold of the list
members before I joined the list. Would you be able to determine if there
were other e-mails from that person sent to the list with Oracle related
questions or he/she is not even interested in Oracle but just a hacker? Buy
the way, I don't have any of his/her e-mails...
Just a little FYI.

yep...

The boys in network admin initially said they would "strip" the virus-now
they have said that they are going to block email from the list.

I mentioned why not block email from the user-and their response was that
other users from the list could get "infected".. and exhibited an example
where individual here on a Fin Apps list got "infected"..

bummer..

The boys in network admin may be barking up the wrong tree. As I
understand it, no email from the list contains a virus.

Even if the virus did come from the list, what kind of solution is this? If
someone from your accounting department sends you an email that has a virus
are they going to block all email from accounting? If a customer sends an
email with a virus are they going to block all email from customers?

Yes, no e-mail from the list contains virus. The case is even worse: he is
not attacking the list; he attacks us(users of the list) personally one by
one. There is definately an association between this list and the person
speading the virus because virus comes as a reply to the list posts. I'd
like to ask a question: are our e-mail addresses widely available to anyone
and there is nothing we can do about it? I had an impression it wasn't the
case. I would call it privacy violation(very strong statement, probably too
strong) or using technical list to do his durty business(more applicable to
the situation). From now on I will think twice before signing up for
another list, posting messages, or replying to them. Yes, you're right I
would not block my customers or friends e-mails because people who have any
respect for themselves would clean their machine up after becoming aware of
the virus. The problem here is that person has been notified by number of
people and he keeps doing it. So, regardless on us individually blocking
his e-mails we need to get to the root of this problem and BLOCK that
person's access to the list. It becomes clear he is doing it deliberatly.
Or you would say: 'Let him do it?' That would not be a good sign

The point remains that such a broad solution makes no sense. If you get an
email from a customer and it has a virus, you could say "there is definitely
an association between our customers and email with viruses." But are you
going to stop all email from customers?

How about just stopping all email? That would solve the problem.

Perhaps the boys in network admin need to work on a more focused solution
instead of cutting off a broad source of email.

Title: RE: Virus again

It's not a list privacy violation.  At least it might not be.  The problem is that you can get pretty much any email address (not all, but most) just by reading the sig lines.  Others can be found by hitting reply and microsoft mail will put that in the reply footer.  Also, harvesting from a list is pretty easy, just look for @ in the body of the message and grab the line.  A quick scan will show which are email addresses and which are not.  Delete the junk lines and you have a directory.  I am not sure, but I believe the list was locked down so the subscriber list is not available.  However, for those that publish, there are no good protections that I know of.

If I get e-mail from the customer with virus I'll inform him/her about the
virus. 99.9% of customers would eliminate the source of the virus. If they
refuse to do so I would probably not want to deal with them even as
customers. It would not make any impact on the business if I lost 0.1% of my
customers and that action would actualy work for me because all good people
out there would know I don't challenge my values. It is like going to an
unsanitized doctor's office, catching something there and doctor's claiming:
'you didn't get it from my office you got it from one of my patients'. That
is what doesn't make scence I can even handle annoying recruter's
e-mails but not e-mails with viruses. Noone asks you to block ALL e-mails
but when the source of inconvinience has been identified why not to take
care of it?

Anyway, I am giving up.

Re: VIRUS!!! VIRUS!!! VIRUS!!!!! BE CAREFUL!!!

2002-04-30 Thread Jan Pruner

Well, it was the answer on Dave's email.
Every day I get about 3-4 emails from servers without antivirus and from
users without basic knowledge of "don't click on all attachments in your
emails".

I removed all Microsoft OS from computers in our company 3 years ago.
So, I only laugh reading news about Sircam, Klez.K etc.

RE: virus package / UDMA for IDE

2002-05-16 Thread Boivin, Patrice J

With McAfee you can exclude some directories from VirusShield, which speeds
things up a bit if you have to use McAfee.

since you mentioned McAfee... if you have to run Oracle on IDE drives
download DMACheck from Microsoft if you want to try using UDMA.

Another question from me... is it a bad thing to use UDMA with Oracle? I
think it just lets disk write bypass the NT kernel, not sure if there are
buffered writes in there.

[don't ask why I am running Oracle with IDE drives, it's a test db. Some
people might be running Personal Oracle.]

not trying to be sarcastic, I do the same thing - I mail all friends and
coleagues - , it just occured to me that both these viruses and the threats
basically cause similar thing - massive flow of e-mails.
