Re: Index update = Delete + insert ?
No - If you update a column that is involved in an index, but the update is a 'no-change' update a) the TABLE row is locked b) undo and redo are generated for the TABLE row but The index is not even visited, let alone locked and modified. Re: Index update = Delete + insert ?
Effectively so, unless you regularly put the same value back into the index. I haven't verified it, but in this case my understanding is that oracle does not the work at all. Of course, any index operation could invoke more work in terms of re-arranging blocks to keep the validity of the index structure. hth connor --- VIVEK_SHARMA [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Is an index Fields' update actually a DELETE followed by an INSERT of the index row ? -- Please see the official ORACLE-L FAQ: http://www.orafaq.net -- Author: VIVEK_SHARMA INET: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fat City Network Services-- 858-538-5051 http://www.fatcity.com San Diego, California-- Mailing list and web hosting services - To REMOVE yourself from this mailing list, send an E-Mail message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (note EXACT spelling of 'ListGuru') and in the message BODY, include a line containing: UNSUB ORACLE-L (or the name of mailing list you want to be removed from).
