FYI, I discovered the problem here... I reduced the number of processes in my init file by half, and I was able to start my instance. Apparently there was enough resources to start both instances at boot time, but not after the system has been running for awhile -- we have a few other services running on this particular server. I will have the sys admin take a look at some of the system paramters... Thanks for all the suggestions!
