RE: LSNRCTL Password

2001-05-16 Thread Lanteigne, Mike

I tried host=localhost on some test boxes and clients could not connect.
Next I'll try host = 127.0.0.1 (7.4 on Sun 2.6)

I see someone has already given you instructions on how
to use a password with listener.ora.

Just thought I might add that they are fairly useless, as you
*cannot* prevent someone with dba group privileges on another
node of the network from shutting down your listener.

They won't be able to start it, but they'll sure be able to shut
it down, and you can't keep them from doing it.

We ran into this at my last employer, and decided passwords
on the listener were a waste of time.

I fully agree with Jared. We encountered this when I duplicated the Prod

automatic stop/start script executed a 'lsnrctl stop' as part of shutdown -

It is quite easy to test this out - you can create a dummy listener.ora on

Looking at the listener.ora that behaviour makes perfect sense. The
tcp/ip host and port are part of the description. If your group id's for
dba are the same on both servers the command would be accepted by the
listed host as valid.

RE: LSNRCTL Password

2001-05-09 Thread Rajaram

If password protection is being used, you must set the password before you
can issue the STOP command. When using passwords for the listener, you
cannot issue the STOP command at the operating system level because the
password can only be set within the lsnctrl utility.
There are two types of password mechanisms in lsnctrl.
1. Unencrypted and
2. U guessed it right - Encrypted.

Here is some theory:
In the listener.ora file add this line:

PASSWORDS_PRODUCTION_LISTENER = (password1, password2)

U can add as many passwords as u like. U can use any one of them to control
the listened.

Now, a word about the encrypted passwords:
At the prompt
LSNRCTL CHANGE_PASSWORD

This will prompt you to enter a new password.

Now, You have an encrypted password.

TO STOP THE LISTENER, U HAVE TO MANUALLY ENTER OR TYPE IN THE PASSWORD IF
YOU ARE USING ENCRYPTED PASSWORD.
However, if u are using an unencrypted password, then just creat a script
file to contain these lines:

set password password1 ( I am not sure of this syntax - check this one)
stop listener
---
and at the OS level,
u can just say
lsnctrl @Script_File

Correct me if I am wrong.

Rajaram.

Can anyone tell me what the syntax is to start, stop, or reload the
listener
when there is a password on it?

2001-05-09 Thread Jared Still

I see someone has already given you instructions on how
to use a password with listener.ora.

Just thought I might add that they are fairly useless, as you
*cannot* prevent someone with dba group privileges on another
node of the network from shutting down your listener.

They won't be able to start it, but they'll sure be able to shut
it down, and you can't keep them from doing it.

We ran into this at my last employer, and decided passwords
on the listener were a waste of time.
