Which database version are you using? as long as I know, at least on Oracle 8.0.6 you can not specify which rollback segment a particular transaction should use. set transaction use rollback segment only works if it's the first statement in your transaction, an easy way to make sure this is the case is to issue a commit directly before issuing this statement. I believe this has been a feature of Oracle since way back in version 7 (Correct me if I'm wrong). Hope this helps. Yes you are right, sorry but I made a mistake, since we are using Baan IVc4 which works against Oracle we have no means to interfere with its transactions when they are commited to Oracle and we can not modify them so that it uses a specific rollback segment, so the only way for us to do it is to disable all except the one we want it to use. -Mensaje original-De: Lee Cullip [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]Enviado el: miércoles, 16 de julio de 2003 10:54Para: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-LAsunto: RE: Rollback Segs set transaction use rollback segment only works if it's the first statement in your transaction, an easy way to make sure this is the case is to issue a commit directly before issuing this statement. I think that's probably the case with most third party applications, if developers haven't coded their apps to use a large rollback segment for certain transactions (which I find is the case with most developers ;-) ) then the only option is to turn off all but the large rollback seg. Well, the other option is to start developing apps and test them using larger data sets then available in EMP and DEPT tables. Even with full table scans, everything seems to work miraculously on those tables. Re: why shrink rollback segs?
If rb's are small, then there is a good chance that just when they are about to aged out of the buffer cache, hey presto! another session needs them again - so you end up with a nice scenario where they spend their life in the cache and cause virtually no IO. As they get larger and larger, the time-before-reuse time gets longer and longer - which will mean more and more IO. Its the same for having lots of extents - many moons ago this used to be due to txns needing their own extents. Oracle lifted this restriction somewhere in v7, but it still makes sense to have 20 or so extents, because then when a rollback segment increases in size, it does it in nice 5% increments - keeping the probability of it all fitting in the cache high. hth connor --- Doug C [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: OK.. this may be a little naive..and maybe I'm just jogging my own memory, but here it goes... Generally I try monitor v$filestat to see what proportion of IO is due to rollback...The ideal is of course nil, but to do so pretty much means giving everyone a couple of dozen 1555's every day :-) So you end up with the balancing act of trying to make them as small as possible without introducing 1555's hth connor --- Doug C [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Thanks.. makes sense... RE: Redo for Rollback segs
to expand on this: changes to the rollback segments will generate entries in the redo logs. They ARE database blocks. In fact, rolling back something will generate change vectors as well. Rachel kinda dumb question, do changes to rollback segmants use rollback segments? and could you get the changes to rollback segments out of the logs with logminer? OK so it's 2 kind of dumb questions, i've been quiet lately.;-) and no i'm not sure why you'd want to get the changes out, but it would be interesting if you could. -- Bill Shrek Thater Certifiable ORACLE DBA Telergy, Inc[EMAIL PROTECTED] You gotta program like you don't need the money, You gotta compile like you'll never get hurt, You gotta run like there's nobody watching, It's gotta come from the heart if you want it to work! -- Please see the official ORACLE-L FAQ: http://www.orafaq.com -- Author: Thater, William INET: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fat City Network Services-- (858) 538-5051 FAX: (858) 538-5051 San Diego, California-- Public Internet access / Mailing Lists To REMOVE yourself from this mailing list, send an E-Mail message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (note EXACT spelling of 'ListGuru') and in the message BODY, include a line containing: UNSUB ORACLE-L (or the name of mailing list you want to be removed from).
