RE: Solaris Release Vs. Version

2001-07-30 Thread Guy Hammond

Hmm. The background is, there was an operating system called SunOS,
derived from BSD. This is the OS used on early Sun kit, even back before
they used the SPARC processor, they were using the 68020.

Eventually, two things happened. The first was moving to SVR4, the
second was OpenWindows. So SunOS 4.x was Solaris 1.x if you had
OpenWindows. SunOS 5.x is Solaris 2.x. (Incidentally, the first shipping
version of NT was 3.1, even tho' it shared no code it had the same GUI
as Windows 3.1).

Then, when Microsoft were planning to call their next OS "NT5", the
marketing drones at Sun thought, hey, we better have a higher version
number than them. So they renamed Solaris 2.7 (aka SunOS 5.7) to
"Solaris 7". (I believe Sybase did something similar when they jumped to
System 10). Solaris 7 and 8 are definite improvements over Solaris 2.5.1
and 2.6, but not nearly enough to warrant jumping entire version
numbers.

Presumably, the engineers at Sun, who actually use version numbers to
track versions of things numerically (!), want no part of this nonsense,
and insist on maintaining SunOS numbers in the code.

If your server can't decide whether it's 5.6 or 5.7, there's probably
something wrong, like a half installed upgrade.

HTH,

g

RE: Solaris Release Vs. Version

2001-07-27 Thread Richard Ji

Solaris includes SunOS plus the Openwin environment.

Solaris 2.5.1 = SunOS 5.5.1 plus Openwin 3.5.1 (I could get the openwin version wrong
as I don't have access to a Sun box right now).

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 07/27/01 12:31PM >>>
The module that is responding to uname -a is SunOS. This is different from
Solaris, but it's confusing why. I guess historically the primary interface
was command-line, and not CDE?  (i.e. maybe solaris:sunos ::
gui:command-line)

Here's a table I found on the web that may help...

SunOS 5.3 = Solaris 2.3
SunOS 5.4 = Solaris 2.4
SunOS 5.5 = Solaris 2.5
SunOS 5.5.1 = Solaris 2.5.1
SunOS 5.6 = Solaris 2.6
SunOS 5.7 = Solaris 7 (aka Solaris 2.7)
SunOS 5.8 = Solaris 8 (aka Solaris 2.8)

.. .and before you get too riled up, ask yourself why Oracle 8.1.6 is also
known as "8iv2"  :)

happy weekend everyone!

RE: Solaris Release Vs. Version

2001-07-27 Thread Christopher Spence

2.6 = Version 6
2.7 = Version 7

The 2 can safely be ignored, it is in fact replaced with a 5 now after
version 4.

So it is really 5.7 and 5.8.

The major version is the right hand number, not the left. Very weird naming
convention.

There is probably something wrong or it is truly 2.7.

2.6 is Version 6 of Solaris
2.7 is Version 7 of Solaris

They are completely different versions. Nothing about them is similar in
terms of release.
