RE: dba age

2003-07-24 Thread Mark Leith

I'm 15
going on 24 (the OT guys know what I mean ;) ).

I'm 24
really. Been using this Oracle stuff for around 5 years now.. I'm not a DBA by
job title, though I am DBA trained (on Oracle SQLServer) and feel I could
do the job quite competently..

I
think I'm the youngest whippersnapper around here.. Have been for quite a while
too.. ;)

RE: dba age

2003-07-23 Thread DENNIS WILLIAMS
AK - Don't fear, you may feel young now, but working as a DBA ages you
really fast. The other day the discussion drifted into chopping fingers for
making mistakes. Before safety couplings were adopted, the experience of
railroad brakemen was judged by the number of fingers missing. Maybe we
should all raise hands.

Few people take on the DBA role straight out of college. A production DBA at
a large site is a critical role. I feel that communication is a vital part
of the job, and the more roles you've had prior to becoming a DBA, the
better. If you've worked as a developer for a few years, you'll be able to
better understand developers and better communicate with them. They'll still
think you're scum, but at least you'll understand why they feel that way. If
you have worked as a user you'll understand how/if users think. A few people
have even moved from the DBA role to other jobs. I don't understand it,
something about being the focus of everyone's frustration, intolerable
hours, inescapable pressure.

Hi!

Age isn't the most important criteria for good DBA.
Ability to analyze issues and foresee possible consequences of your actions
are the most important ones, at least from my point of view.

Personally, I just turned 25. Whether I'm experienced or not, I won't
speculate, but so far I've lost no data and have kept all my customers happy
;)

I
started working with Oracle back in the late thirties on the Rexall

a player piano, we did, for hours on end, then we would feed the boxes of
program reels into the Wonder-Math and stand withoiler cans and masking

Those
were woolly times, yes indeed. My dear friend Martin and I wouldrun
reports for managementand load data until the wee hours then skidaddle off
to the local "speakeasy" for a few drops of heaven and some song. We would sing
Camp Town Races and Harvest Moon untilour voices were horse with the
strain and quite giddy with drink.. Martin wasparticularly adapt at
convincing the young sporting ladies to sing with us, he was quite a wolf that

state of pleasant and dizzy euphoria we would break our morning fast with some
rashers of bacon, fresh eggs, rhubarb pie, pots of hot black coffee and
witty repartee with the waitress at the Darcie's Hop-Inn. A quick nap and back
we went toreorganize the tablespaces on the wonder-math and other sundry

quite happy with our position and we lived life with all the zest of a young man

We

Tanel.

I am personally impressed with your pratical knowledge, based on your
responses to this list. Mostly DBA's particpating on this list is 35+ (may
in the range of 40-45). Only one DBA is 42 years old for the last 5 years.
Guess who Gogala Mladen(don't shoot me as I am your fan). That is his
favorite/magic figure 42. However, he can tell his real age if he wants.

Rafiq

Hi!

Age isn't the most important criteria for good DBA.
Ability to analyze issues and foresee possible consequences of your actions
are the most important ones, at least from my point of view.

Personally, I just turned 25. Whether I'm experienced or not, I won't
speculate, but so far I've lost no data and have kept all my customers happy

;)

Tanel.

Yup! SQL Protected Mode Executable, which loaded oracle above 1M
boundary on 286 boxes. I believe that the last ones were produced
for oracle 6.

S I remember UFI, RPT-RPF, Forms 2.0 (IAD-IAG-IAP), SQL-QMX (for what it
S last),ODL (Oracle Data Loader), but I do not remember SQLPME . What was
it ?

Ow! That makes my brain hurt. I think it was like Protected Memory
Executive that allowed Oracle to run up in the above 1M region on
386's and in some special archetectures with 286's. I hadn't relived
that nightmare in many years.

2003-07-23 Thread Reginald . W . Bailey

SQLPME was a program to load Oracle into extended memory on the 386 PC, if
memory serves me correctly. I am over 40 and I have been dealing with
relational databases for a little over 19 years. I remember punch cards,
Rbase, the first IBM PCs, Oracle Forms 2, Oracle v4.5 and 5, etc. I have
been dealing with Oracle databases for about 16 years as developer and DBA.
(Yeesh I am starting to feel old) I am not the oldest DBA here, but I seem
to have the most experience. I don't have the most hair (I keep it shaved

vapor backup plan that worked the first time.

RE: dba age

2003-07-23 Thread Michael Kline
I remember creating a distributed Oracle driven Order entry system
on DOS 4.1.0 running on IBM AT boxes and a Vax 750. I also wrote
a dialing VAX program that would dial the PCs up, and down load their
data WAY before sqlnet. That data was brought into the VAX, separated,
sent to a mainframe for pricing, came back, sorted and distributed
and sent back to the branches(from CT to CA)and it was ready for
them the next morning. It used import/export a basic listening
program a VAX file transfer with a pc hook, and could be programmed
with an ini file of sorts for start time, end time, number of
retries, etc. It was quite slick.

If an AT died, they had a new one within 1-2 days and it was synced
in the night they set it up. We could have a blank set up and
loaded with cust data in about 3-4 hours and out the door.

We also had to contend that orders cut in CT could be shipped from
VA, which means CT gets an ack, and VA got shipping.

The Order entry, being DOS, had to be done just so, query this,
then do this, there's the normal products, pick the quantities,
submit. When done right, it worked GOOD... Oracle even did a write
up for it. That was back when Ken Jacobs still made site visits.
He vaguely remembers me, poor fellow.

I had several suggestions back then that they incorporated into
what I think was the later Version 4 and 5 databases.. and they
took a copy of my problem tracking system I ran there. They were
impressed I had a database report of all problems and it also
tracked those I fixed before Oracle did.

Ah, the good old days when everything was still KISS.

I started on an IBM 360/40 running DOS, BOS, and TOS, and
POWER... Demand Deposits posting was about 2-4 boxes of
punched cards. Of course that was 1971.

Maks.
