Hello

 I need help on this.

We have a Oracle 7.3.4 database and Oracle 8.1.6 database

 The application is as follows

package in Oracle 8.1.6 calls package in Oracle 7.3.4
 using Database link

Package in Oracle 7.3.4 does a lot of processing
 but now
sometimes Oracle 7.3.4 package gives distributed lock timeout error

and sometimes Oracle 8.1.6 packages gives this error.

 This has made us wonder
 'what is happeneing'!

 Can someone help me with
 a. understaning this phenomenon
 b. in oracle 8.1.6 the parameter distributed_lock_timeout
   is obsolete
and the users want to run this package
is there someway of 'running' this
 c. Is this type of processing
ie calling package executing a lot of statements
called package also executing a lot of statements
and the final commit being back in the
      calling package the 'suggested' (recommended)
    way?

isn't there a better way of doing this?

 Thanks
