James - Given the breadth of your questions, you may want to purchase
"Oracle Distributed Systems" by Charles Dye, an O'Reilly book. It is the
only book I have found on Oracle replication.

may help. I am working my way through the contents
now so I cannot give you any hands on experience yet.
