*Job Description – *



Manage Unix computer systems including network, operating systems,
databases and the system side of the applications running on it. Manage
these systems in accordance with the Service Level Agreement. Work with
Senior Unix Administrators to achieve this goal if needed. Responsible for
all Unix administration activities. Responsible for assuring system
availability and performance of Unix systems. Provide support for customer
problems and requests. Little daily supervision required. Install, update
and maintain Applications, middleware, system management tools, operating
systems and networks in the Unix environment, Responsibility for day-to-day
operations of the Unix systems, Provide technical solutions for problems,
Provide and maintain documentation such as System Operations Guides or Work
Instructions describing local procedures, service level agreements, etc.,
Participate in medium to large projects, Able to effectively lead small
internal projects, Use ISO9000 procedures to complete tasks, Perform all
actions needed to fulfill the system management tasks described above.
The Senior Unix/Linux Engineer is a senior information technology
professional within the Datacenter Transformation team who analyzes
existing *nix architectures and workloads and designs new or complementary
solutions for transformed environments, implements solutions, and
troubleshoots any residual issues after transformation. As part of the team
the Senior Unix/Linux engineer will participate in early project discovery
to understand the current mode of operation (CMO). The Engineer will then
participate in the evaluation of those workloads and create a Future Mode
of Operation (FMO) Design that aligns with the company’s service catalog.
The Senior Unix/Linux Engineer will concentrate on high-level server
related duties such as system architecture, network design and
dependencies, selection of physical replacement devices and assessment of
virtualization feasibility, lead troubleshooting activities for outages
and/or performance issues during transformation projects. The Senior
Unix/Linux Engineer will lead administrative resources in the
implementation of the prescribed design. The Senior Unix/Linux Engineer
will review, analyze, and document system requirements and dependencies and
select the best manner of transformation in the FMO environment. The
Unix/Linux Engineer will identify and document requirements, define scope
and objectives, and identify system modifications needed to support
business requirements and initiatives in the transformed environment. The
Senior Unix/Linux Engineer will migrate Unix and Linux workloads from the
CMO to FMO environments using specific tools and industry best practices.

*Essential Duties and Responsibilities:*


• Work with customers on data center transformation activities to confirm
(and document accordingly) existing Unix and Linux Systems and workloads,
develop Functional Specifications.
• Independently manage all aspects related to
*Linux/Unix Workload Integration projects. *• Serve as liaison between the
customer, Transition Team and the Datacenter Tower to communicate difficult
concepts and processes. Work with vendors and contractors to define
detailed technical requirements
• Participate in Application owner and Business User interviews to identify
system functions and architectural and network related dependencies
• Execute Discovery activities to fully identify and document the existing
Linux/Unix server inventory
• Work with the Datacenter Server Tower to develop and implement the
appropriate solution for successful transformation
• Consult on complex business issues and design considerations
• Responsible for the identification and documentation of system
requirements to enable the Technical Team to deliver the appropriate
solution for successful transformation
• Participate in the development and execution of the user acceptance test
plans, as well as schedule testing
• Create new documentation and processes as needed to help refine,
optimize, and/or to establish network functions and processes



*Requirements Education and Experience:*


• Bachelors Degree in an Information Technology Discipline and 6 or more
years professional experience
•
*8+ years of UNIX (Enterprise RedHat, and/or Solaris, HPUX and AIX) systems
experience in a large, 24x7 high availability environment. *• Extensive
Experience with older operating systems including Tru64
• Proven Experience migrating legacy Linux servers to modern virtual
environments using products like VMconverter or PlateSpin
• In depth understanding of distributed networks
• Significant experience in the administration of SSL certs,


*Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:*


• *Must have strong experience with Virtualization technologies for Linux
and Unix including:*
o

*VMware- Vsphere o Solaris Zones and LDOMs o AIX LPARs*
• Must have proven experience with deep technical aspects of enterprise
consolidation/ integration projects
• Must have strong communication skills, written and verbal
• Experience interviewing end users to gather requirements
• Ability to demonstrate professionalism in all internal and external
interactions
• Ability to analyze situations and challenges in a systematic, logical
approach
• Ability to analyze data points extracted by automated and manual
discovery processes
• Experience and deep knowledge of Redhat EL 4.x and 5.x
• Experience building in VMWare 4 and 5 environments.
• IBM and/or Sun Blade Centers hardware experience
• Advanced Veritas Volume Manager (VxVM) and VERITAS Cluster Server (VCS)
or other High-availability service.
• Experience with Sendmail, Apache, Oracle Weblogic, IBM WebSphere, JBoss,
Tomcat
• Experience with installation and basic Oracle 10/11g functions and tuning
the operating system components for peak performance
• Experience working with Oracle RAC desirable
• Knowledge of Multi-Tiered Application Architecture
• Strong experience and knowledge of system internals; memory management,
scheduling, TCP/IP stack, and etc.
• Strong knowledge of dns, ntp, nfs, and ftp
• Experience and knowledge Ethernet, multicast, vlan tagging, etc.
• Ability to compile Linux Kernels and Kernel modules
• Strong scripting skills (KORN, Perl, bash, Awk, Sed, etc.) Python (is a
plus)
• Experience with Networking (sub-netting, routing, etc.) and SAN concepts
(provisioning, use, etc.)
• Experience with ITIL
• Ability to document ‘as built’ operating guides
