[OGD] Orchid seed storage

2006-07-25 Thread Norbert
If I may pick your brains... I read somewhere that a saturated solution
of calcium chloride is the preferred drying agent for storing orchid
seeds. Is this because it allows some residual hydration of the seeds,
and this is better than thorough desiccation? Thanks in advance for your
views. - Norbert

Frikkie,

There were seven. The first was published in 1852,
the second in 1862, the third in 1868, the fourth in 1871, the fifth in 1877,
the sixth in 1885 and the seventh and final one in 1894. Each subsequent edition
was more comprehensive the previous one. The first six were all approximately 7
3/4 X 5 1/4 inches however the seventh was approximately 9 1/4 X 7 1/4 inches.
The first six were by Benjamin Samuel Williams, but B. S. Williams died before
the seven edition was completed so the seventh was an enlargement and revision
by Henry Williams.

[OGD] dehydrating seeds over calcium chloride

2006-07-25 Thread Peter Croezen

Hi Norbert,

When a super saturated solution of calcium chloride
fills for example onethird of a
closed vessel, you will see a layer of
calcium chloride at the bottom of the solution

The area above the solution is then maintained at a
relative humidity of 32-33%

Seeds dehydrated in the space above the solution
for a few days to a week will retain a moisture content of about
5-6%. These are then best sealed
immediatelyin acontainer with a minimum of air space and placed in
the fridge at 5C.

Tests conducted on only a small percentage of
orchid species overseveral genera, dehydrated and stored this
way,
haveshown maintenance of viability
for up to 25 years.

P.T. Seaton and H.W.Pritchard didsome of the
research on this. For more details see the AOS Bulletin of Aug
1994.

Andy, I presume by 'bad food' you mean haggis? My recollection was the
awful free scotch handed out at the opening soiree. LOL

orchid community of South Florida, will take place on Friday August 11th at
Fairchild Gardens. Come at 4:30 to remember Bert who made [sic]so much of
the orchid life of South Florida glow.

Well Colin, if you drink the Scotch first, the haggis is quite palatable!!
Being of 50% Scottish heritage, I remember ny father telling me of his visit
to Wick whilst on leave during the Second World War. After a breakfast of
oatmeal and a lunch of fried oatmeal cakes he cautiously enquired whether
his uncle ever tired of oatmeal only to be told why would I get tired of
oatmeal, it's my food. I've been to Scotland a couple of times and I can't
remember one meal, which pretty much says it all for me.

The old Orchid Parasite may no longer be the head of the WOC Committee but
she still has got another free trip to South Africa for their national show
in early September. Maybe some of my friends in the republic won't have
forgotten how she torpedoed their bid for a WOC in Cape Town in 2011!

[OGD] mechanical self-pollination / other species ?

2006-07-25 Thread viateur . boutot
An article recently published in Nature [volume 441, page 945]
indicates that :

Holcoglossum amesianum... Unlike all other forms of self-pollination which
require assistance from wind, gravity, insects or secretions, this orchid's
is entirely mechanical.

Article URL:

**
Is that form of self-pollination also occurring in other species ?

How new to science is the phenomena observed by the Chinese scientists
[LaiQuiang Huang and his colleagues at Tsinghua University] ?

In what aspect(s) is the mechanical self-pollination observed in the
species Holcoglossum amesianum unique or different from the same phenomena
[if it occurs] in other species?
