[OGD] Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2006 / criticism [Thailand]
"The Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry has decided to end the role of... horticulturist Rapee Sagarik in the forthcoming Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2006 in Chiang Mai after he made remarks critical of the multi-billion-baht exposition. ... Rapee... had been approached by the ministry to serve as an honorary president of the event. ... Rapee... gave an interview to Matichon newspaper, saying the exhibition might fall short of international standards and was plagued with questionable transparency in the arrangements. He also said the preparations went on at a snail's pace. His remarks sparked concern among those involved with the event, especially a Chiang Mai-based orchid grower's group. A source said the group was considering withdrawing from the event. The Agriculture and Cooperative Ministry yesterday said... Rapee had nothing to do with the approval or the readiness of the exhibition because his role in the event was as an adviser to the orchid exhibition and competition, on behalf of the Thailand Orchid Association." [OGD] Professor Rapee Sagarik.
A very good little tidbit Viateur. Rapee is a revered figure in the orchid world and good on him for exposing what is clearly a government boondoggle in Thailand. There was some scheme in Chiang Mai a couple of years ago, headed up by a Pom (probably O'Byrne's cousin!) who knew nothing about orchids. Of course after spending jillions of baht, nothing eventuated and finally the whole sorry mess was abandoned. Oh, how I would love to be a fly on the wall at the South African Orchid Council national show this past week. The orchid parasite was headed there, thinking she was going to be surrounded by her adoring public and completely unaware of the hostility she has engendered since rigging the vote and ensuring the WOC after Miami would go to Singapore rather than Cape Town. She is also behind some of the nonsense in the nomenclatural changes but the orchid world has had enough and several big guns are about to enter the fray. Don't change any labels except with pencil as things are about to really hot up before the end of 2006. [OGD] Bond movies / science
"The 007 films... some... unbelievable biological science, according to the authors of a new book on Bond [Lois H. Gresh and Robert Weinberg 'The Science of James Bond: From Bullets to Bowler Hats to Boat Jumps, the Real Technology Behind 007's Fabulous Films' John Wiley & Sons, Sept. 2006] ... mid-November release of the latest James Bond epic, Casino Royale... in all of the previous 20 Bond adventures, the laws of biology and chemistry were routinely ignored. ... Hugo Drax, the bad guy in 1979's Moonraker was a multibillionaire with global ambitions and the money to turn his dreams into reality. Drax saw the world as used-up, corrupt and badly in need of a make-over. He had just the solution. Headquartered on a huge space station circling the Earth, Drax and his disciples planned to kill all humanity. Afterwards, he and his minions would father a new, more perfect race. The only thing Drax needed was a virulent poison that would kill people but leave the plant and lower animal life untouched. When Bond finally tracks Drax down, he finds the billionaire in the Amazon jungle. It's here that Drax has located a poisonous orchid whose dust kills humans but leaves plants and animals unharmed. Drax has already loaded his space station with bombs filled with the stuff. He intends to spread the dust all over the world and watch mankind perish. Needless to say, Bond stops him. But why bother? Life scientists know there aren't any orchids with poisonous pollen."
