[OGD] kovachii / Falmouth, Massachusetts (US)

2007-01-21 Thread Peter O'Byrne
in OGD V9 #25, viateur provided us with this media clipping:

"Glen Decker is not only a vendor and a member of the society, but he is an
adventurer who brought a rare orchid out of a jungle in Peru. He is
cultivating it in greenhouses in California and Hawaii. It is called
kovachii for short. He will give a talk on that adventure which will
include excellent pictures."

That is well within the time-frame that I predicted. The flood has
started. By the end of this year you won't be able to move at an
Orchid Show without knocking over a P. kovachii.

Amazing how quickly they grow (er ... from flask), isn't it ?

[OGD] Phrag. kovachii Viateur

2007-01-21 Thread peter croezen
Though Glenn did visit the Pk habitat, he did not bring this species from the
jungles of Peru. The Pk seedlings he and I
offer for sale were artificially propagated in the legal Pk nursery Centro de
Jardineria Manrique in Lima Peru and legally imported
into the United States and Canada.

[OGD] Pk seedlings

2007-01-21 Thread peter croezen

Peter,

I agree that illegal mature Pk are being traded all over the world.

However, what Glenn and I are offering for sale are Pk seedlings with a leaf
span of less than 10 cm and yes, these are from legal flasks germinated more
than three years ago,2003, by Alfredo Manrique in his legal Pk laboratory. We
both supply legal Pk certificates with every sale, duplicate copies of which
are returned to Alfredo Manrique in Lima for INRENA, the Peruvian CITES
Authority.

[OGD] Rick Cruz, photographer / Florida (US)

2007-01-21 Thread viateur . boutot
"Rick Cruz... into the Fakahatchee Strand State Park in Collier County in
December... found a stunning white orchid. It was the albino form of the
native clamshell orchid [Prosthechea cochleata]. Cruz photographed it on
the spot, recording a flower that had not been seen since 1960.

That photograph is among Cruz's works on display at Everglades National
Park and will be among orchid art shown at the Tamiami International Orchid
Festival Saturday and Jan. 28...

says Cruz... Two years ago, Mike Owens, then the manager of the Fakahatchee
Strand [State Park], called me when there was a ghost orchid in bloom and
asked if I wanted to see it.
...
He explained how things were happening to the ecosystem and how people were
poaching orchids, and it occurred to me that this was my new mission: to
show people what is there and what we have to preserve.''

Now 38, Cruz has plunged headlong into that mission of photographing
threatened and endangered native Florida plants...

Cruz will display orchid photographs including the ghost orchid
[Dendrophylax lindenii], clamshell, pygmy orchid [Encyclia pygmaea ?] and
Cranichis muscosa, an orchid rediscovered in 2004 after 99 years of being lost.
...
Cruz... ''Last year, I discovered 15 ghost orchids at the Fakahatchee that
had not been documented before,'' he says. ``That place is now named for
me: Cruz Slough.''

He also has been one of the few people to experience the scent of the ghost
orchid. ''I've been out there from midnight to 4 a.m., sniffing the ghost
orchid,'' he says. ``It's amazing. You sit there and it seems like every 30
or 40 minutes, it throws out a chum trail of perfume to attract a sphinx
moth.''

[OGD] Offer withdrawn to Tour Thailand and 2007 IPA Symposium in Taiwan

2007-01-21 Thread Lee

I've decided it's best to withdraw the offer to tour Thailand with the option
to attend the IPA Symposium. A far better airfare is posted in the Phal Digest
#2007-4 by Yin-Tung Wang. What a huge savings! No need for group rates. The EVA
Air site shows even lower economy airfare roundtrip to Taiwan for as little as
$780! If you act very soon you may even still get the free lodging offered by
our hosts at the TIOS. That, my friends, is less than many stateside vacations!
If you want more info just send me an email.
