[OGD] spenders at the international show (Taiwan)

2007-03-08 Thread viateur . boutot
"International buyers from 22 countries, including Japan, the United States
and Germany, are expected to be big spenders at an international orchid
show in southern Taiwan later this month...

the 2007 Taiwan International Orchid Show... will be held March 10-18 in
Hobi, Tainan County.

... around 50 per cent of the orchids sold around the world coming from Taiwan.

The Council of Agriculture (COA) has listed orchids as the flagship product
of Taiwan's agricultural exports, with the production value of orchid
exports climbing every year.

The Taiwan Orchid Grower Association said the production value of butterfly
orchids [Phalaenopsis] registered an annual increase of 43 per cent last
year, while slipper orchids [Paphiopedilum] also enjoyed growth of 30 per cent.

... the orchid show received orders of NT$800 million (US$24.24 million) in
2005 and NT$1.3 billion in 2006 and predicted that orders will break NT$2
billion this year.

... the biggest challenge facing Taiwan's agriculture is international
marketing... the establishment of a biotech orchid park in Tainan County,
as well as the holding of the orchid show, are aimed at solving this problem.

The Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), which is joining
the Tainan county government in sponsoring the show for the first time, has
assisted international marketing by inviting more international buyers to
attend the show.

Yeh Ming-shui, TAITRA deputy secretary-general, noted that Taiwan's orchid
industry... enjoys a competitive edge in propagation, as well as in
research and development."

Peter,

With all due respect to you and also to Jerry Fischer, by your timelines
that is only 14 months. How many phrags have any of us (including the
Phrag Masters of the world) bloomed 14 months from flask? You see, this
is so confusing to many, I am sure. There was a time when you would not
believe that anyone could have a seedling of Pk almost 12" a while back
(which is most likely a Pk hybrid). That plant is not ready for blooming
yet and that was from flasks imported in April of 2005, 23 months ago.
Now you are telling the world that Glen has a plant that IS big enough
to bloom in only 14 months? Hybrid vigor and small parent aside, how is
this possible? Do you guys have some new fertilizer or such that you are
using? Sorry Jerry, I disagree with you.

[OGD] Riverview Orchids ceases operation / Ohio (US)

2007-03-08 Thread viateur . boutot
"The Riverview greenhouse business dates back to 1924, when Italian
immigrant Frank Bosco moved his greenhouses from Salineville to Liverpool
Township acreage... The business expanded with the help of sons Sullivan
“Sul” and Charles “Chick” Bosco, who had helped Frank in the greenhouses as
young boys after the death of their mother Rosa.

When the main building, salesrooms, garages and some greenhouses burned in
1935, young architect Robert Beatty was hired to design a new building.
Riverview’s distinctive English Tudor style front was the result...

During the 1950s, Frank Sr., Sul and Chick had 35 employees working in
three distinct areas florist, greenhouses, and orchids (and later
landscaping and nursery) selling both wholesale and retail... Chuck, son
of Chick, and Frank Jr. later joined the family business.

... the orchids business split off about 1959.

In the 1960s... Riverview... was known... as the country's largest orchid
grower and shipper.” Riverview employed 100 full-time employees.

Today, Riverview Florists and greenhouses continue to operate under new
ownership. Charles Bosco manages the estate of his father, who died last
June...

As recently as 10 years ago, Riverview Orchids... employed 400 local people
for the weeks leading up to those holidays [Easter and Mother’s Day]...
They packed and shipped millions of orchids...

Riverview Orchids has ceased operations, reportedly done in by three
factors: a shortage of temporary labor, an increase in the minimum wage,
and declining demand.

... the late Chuck Bosco... sold Riverview Orchids LLC four years ago to
Mike Vantusko of Parma, Ohio. The Boscos helped Vantusko run the operation
the past three years. Chuck Bosco died this past June at age 62.

“When Ohio voted in the raise in the minimum wage, (Vantusko) said it was
going to boost his costs $125,000 a year and he was done. He closed it up
and went back to Cleveland,” said Charles Bosco.
...
The passage of Issue 2 in the November election raised the minimum wage in
Ohio from $5.15 to $6.85 as of Jan. 1.
...
“We sold all over the country,” Charles Bosco said. “Kmart, Wal-Mart, Giant
Eagle, Walgreen’s, Albertson’s...
Back in the ’90s, for both holidays... we shipped three million cymbidium
orchids.”

... cymbidium... Workers would place the stem of each orchid in a small
vial of preservative-treated water and put the corsages in clear plastic
containers, ready for sales display. They were packed in crates, then in
refrigerated trucks for shipping.

The rising cost of natural gas in the ‘70s made growing their own
orchids... impractical for the Boscos. “They grew all the orchids
themselves up to about 1980,” said Charles. “They had to keep 25 acres of
glass greenhouses 83 degrees in January to make them grow... ”

Though Chuck Bosco kept a few orchids for sentimental reasons, all blossoms
for the holiday business were flown in from Holland."

Barbara, referring to me again, says:

I remember your posting that nonsense.I knew then, what you have only learned
recently, namely that Pk seedlings grow extremely slow and Pk hybrids grow very
fast.

That 12" seedling you pushed as proof of superior Pk growing, was in fact a
hybrid even if had been 6 inches,
it did not have the characteristics of a Pk seedling, which you would also not
know.

Amazing how you change your "assumptions" from one extreme to the other.

Then you believed a Peruflora Pk seedling could be 12", and today, one half
year later, you do not believe that
a CJM Pk hybrid can be 12" plus and flower.

You were wrong then, and you are wrong now. Who truly cares that an unknown in
the slipper world disagrees with an expert like Jerry Fischer, who knows that
CJM won the Pk hybrid race fair and square. I respect Jerry for his expertise
and honesty.

[OGD] from seed to bloom

2007-03-08 Thread mhach
Dear All-
It is easy to be doubtful of the flowering of these new hybrids if you take
into consideration that it is not widely reported that the length of time that
it takes to produce a blooming plant is greatly reduced over the old assumption
that orchids take years to flower. If you look at modern production facilities
in the Netherlands, The continental USA, and Hawaii the length of time that it
takes for some of these hybrids to bloom is much less than the traditional 3-4
years that most of us learned from our amateur orchid references. It is now not
uncommon to have some Phalaenopsis, maudiae type paphs, and yes Phragmipediums
blooming in sometimes as short as 14 months from flask. This is obviously still
not true of some plants like multifloral paphs (but now rather than 10-12 years
they are flowering in around 3-4 years for some of the hybrids). I have seen
this evidence first hand without a doubt that the proof is true and can give
many examples of such. Under excellent culture I have flowered maudiae type
paphs in 20 months from flask - the same plants that were grown in Hawaii and
at a facility in the netherlands bloomed some two months earlier. And if you
speak to Mr. Decker he will tell you that the hybrids are growing quickly and
that the pure species is growing much slower - exactly what you would expect in
this case. If you use just simple thought about a nursery in Hawaii that
receives no seasonal change in day length, relatively no seasonal fluctuation
in temperature, giving the plants the ideal amount of water and fertilizer- it
essentially gives you near perfect conditions for growth - plants growing in
these environments will mature at a much faster rate than on a windowsil or
hobby greenhouse. If this is not true - do you really think that it would be
profitable to be growing the millions of orchids that are sold each year if you
had to grow them in a greenhouse for 3-4 years before they flowered and were
capable of being sold?

Sincerely
Marc

[OGD] Pk seedlings

2007-03-08 Thread Gerald Fisher
Sure do love a tennis match. Back and forth, back and forth . 'Quoth'
the Raven, "Evermore" . back and forth. The only trouble is that we
will never get to any 'Pk' point - not even hoping for set or match. Maybe
we should call this the Pk Whimp-le-ton. Seems to me a lot like the Libby
trial -- a very important question but those who really know what is going
on just ain't talking while others can only speculate.

Maybe it is time to go back to CITES. Let's try for something really juicy
to speculate on:

Will the US/EU CITES Police once again blow it like they did at one of the
Redlands International Orchid Festivals a few years ago (French grower -
don't remember which of the 'Family' it was) or will they exercise wisdom
and cut the WOC some slack?

Las Vegas - will you offer odds? Betters - go for stupidity and bureaucracy.

That 'other' Jerry Fis(c)her identified the problem(s)(Orchids Digest, Vol
9, Issue 88) and nobody from AOS nor the Miami WOC has replied about how
they are working with "Authority" to have things go smoothly - or even
rationally:

"The problem really is that if a person from the EU wants to purchase plants
at the 19thWOC they have to have an import permit in advance from their
countries management authority. This means they have to know exactly what
they want to purchase well in advance of the WOC. ... Many other countries
also require import permits and this all takes time.
It is truly time for CITES reform regarding (ORCHID-my add) plants and I
will shortly begin posting on this forum (and others) proposals as to how
CITES could change to accommodate trade in truly art-prop material. I will
be looking for feedback and if growers approve of these ideas I will ask for
a statement of support. I will then begin to take this material to CITES
officials in the US and Switzerland to see if change can occur."

Don't like CITES? MAYBE WE CAN WE CONSIDER SOMETHING FOR WHICH I HAVE A DEEP
PASSION (and something that can be accommodated by local/WOC societies -
something over which they do have direct control):

1. Will all orchid shows (especially the WOC) set aside a special time for
photographers - you know those guys and gals with tripods? Recently 'Rf WOC
Bob' got right back on CITES but I have seen nothing on my comment on WOC
and photographers dated 2 March 2007 Orchids Digest, Vol 9, Issue 82.

2. Will all orchid shows allow someone other than 'THE AOS chosen - FILM
CAMERA - one' to take quality pictures of AOS awarded plants while they are
being photographed for award record? I only write for myself but I would be
perfectly resigned/willing to do so at 02:00 if that was the only time
available.

3. When will the AOS recognize Digital Photography? Maybe they are
reluctant to do so because it seems to me that their magazine 'frequently'
has 'juiced' pictures.

While I am on the soap box - but it is actually related. I ask that judges
do the best they can to judge the quality of the photograph rather than the
orchid. I was once told by a judge that my picture was not selected for a
ribbon because the orchid I had selected to photograph was not of award
quality. Maybe he was being kind but I don't think so - it WAS a lousy
blossom but a very good PhotoShop pastel rendering worthy of an 'artistic'
ribbon. I later sold the picture for US$50.00.

PAX - but I fear not of my time.

[OGD] Phrag blooming time

2007-03-08 Thread e.muehlbauer
Now, while I understand the controversy associated with anything related to
P. kovachii, I do not understand the controversy over a SINGLE clone that
managed to bloom 14 months out of flask. We are not dealing with a load of
blooming plants hitting the market. This is one SINGLE clone that happily
enough managed to bloom in a very fast time. The reason that phrags are
getting so popular now is that they, or rather the hybrids, are so easy to
grow and bloom. Phrag hybrids grow fast, and bloom young. No, not allI
have some phrag hybrids that just won't bloom. It happens. I have also had
Phrag hybrids, such as Eric Young, that zoomed through their growth and
bloomed within less than 18 months after my purchasing them in compots.
Believe me, I may have had years of experience, but I would never, ever,
label myself an expert grower. I'm just a hobbyest, dealing with
windowsills, fluorescent lights, and an outdoor deck in the summer. Some
plants grow well, some don't. Some bloom, some die. And if I can get an
occasional seedling phrag to bloom within 2 years from flask, It is not hard
at all for me to conceive that a professional grower, with all the
advantages of professional growing conditions, and large numbers of plants,
can bloom a phrag hybrid 14 months out of flask. However, this is Pk, not
just an old besseae cross...so what? Yes its new...yes, the species itself
appears to be a slower grower (at this point in people's observations), its
still a hybrid, and phrag hybrids can grow damn quickly. And, lets not
forget...we are talking about 1 SINGLE clone that happened to bloom early.
What's the opinion of the other professional phrag growers on this list? Is
it possible to get a single clone of a phrag cross to bloom early? Take
care, Eric Muehlbauer in very unusually frigid Queens NYbesseae in
bloom, concolor, bellatulum, argus, hirsutissimum in bud.
