Re: [OGD] U. S. Orchid Postage Stamps - 2008?
Title: U. S. Orchid Postage Stamps - 2008? I was involved with the issue of the set of orchid stamps issued at the 11th WOC in Miami back in 1984 and conducted the first Orchids on Stamps Forum at a WOC at that time. I began writing to the Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee about 3 years before the Conference. Every letter I wrote was answered with a form letter until, lo and behold, I received a letter informing me that they were considering issuing a set. I then sent them my recommendations as to the orchids to place on the stamps. I was of course most interested in having epiphytic orchids that grow here in South Florida but did recommend the Cypripedium which was pictured. Not too long after that I received a letter that they were indeed going to issue a set. They decided to use orchids from various parts of the country in order to make it a national issue. I don't know what influence my correspondence had on the Committee but I did receive one of the dozen or so Presentation Folders from the Postal Department. At that time I was not aware of any time limits being placed on the issue of a new set. The rules may have changed since then. I understand that the leadership of the Miami Conference also was involved and seem to remember someone telling me not too long ago that they were seeking a set of stamps for 2008. It certainly would not do any harm for as many people as possible to contact the Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee about the possibility of them issuing a set of orchid stamps. Maybe someone knows whether the Committee has been approached by the conference leaders about this matter. I too am hoping that another set of stamps will be issued. Let's hope that it happens. Andy Lanier Dear Colleagues:Does anybody know of any efforts to try to persuade the U. S. Postal Service to issue postage stamps bearing images of orchids to correlate with WOC-19 in 2008?The idea has been on my mind for some time and I have done some probing with no positive results so far. I even wrote to a high level official at AOS about a month ago, thinking that organization might be our voice in the high councils of the nation, but I have not received a reply. So, I now turn to this forum, although it may be too late. From a citizens and orchidists point of view it seems like a wonderful idea, especially with some of the terrific orchid artists who are turning out beautiful works of art. It makes sense for many reasons, not the least of which is the growing popularity of orchids (2nd most popular house plant in the U.S.) and a number of other reasons that dont need defending here.I have learned the following:Selection of stamp designs is done long ahead of the time of issuance. A 15-member Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee has been appointed to examine all proposals and make recommendations to the USPS. The composition of that committee and the guidelines for submitting proposals for new stamp designs are found at the following web site: http://www.usps.com/communications/organization/csac_print.htmFor anyone interested in pursuing this matter further, it is worthwhile consulting the information at that web site.Be aware, the prospect of getting orchid stamps in 2008 may be a moot issue, for two reasons. In fine print, the guidelines say that proposals should be submitted to the Citizens Committee not less than 3 years prior to the proposed date of issue. Also, no stamp will be considered for issuance if the same subject has been issued within the past 50 years. There may be exceptions, but . . . Four orchid postage stamps were issued in 1984 at the time of the 11th WOC in Miami. If this is pursued at all, it is probably best not to mention 1984.Is there any hope? If so, it is worth the effort to help move some mountains. Are there loopholes to squeeze through? Has anyone had experience in this arena before? If it is hopeless, none of us has the energy or time to waste spinning wheels. But, I cannot let go until I learn something firm. What a shame it would be to miss the opportunity.Hoping against hope.Charles Bracker__ ___the OrchidGuide Digest (OGD)orchids@orchidguide.comhttp://orchidguide.com/mailman/listinfo/orchids_orchidguide.com ___ the OrchidGuide Digest (OGD) orchids@orchidguide.com http://orchidguide.com/mailman/listinfo/orchids_orchidguide.com
Re: [OGD] query about Kim Il-sungia - danke/thanks
The Kimilsungia dendrobium blossom has been used by North Korea several times on their postage stamps and on four banknotes, 50 won as a stylized blossom, 100 won, 1000 won, and 5000 won values, the last three with basically the same design, just a difference in color. It's always depicted as a deep purple color. Andy Lanier Thanks Olaf [Gruss] for providing an informative answer to my query. With the tips given, I was able to find the following :"Dendrobium Kimilsungia...The name is widely used in North Korea for a hybrid Dendrobium derived from Den. Ale Ale Kai x Den. Pompadour, which grex was originally registered as Den .Clara Bundt by the originator in 1964.This plant was also named Kimilsungia by Indonesian President Sukarno,in honour of Kim Il Sung of North Korea on the occasion of his visit to Indonesia in April 1965. It is not clear to the registrar whether the name Kimilsungia applies to the grex or a cultivar derived from it.There is also a similarly named grex, Den .Kimilsung Flower, which is derived from Den .Ale Ale Kai x Den .Lady Constance."source : "REGISTRAR 'S NOTES" [Julian M.H.Shaw,RHS International Orchid Registrar] in NEW ORCHID HYBRIDS January - March 2003 REGISTRATIONS -- Supplied by the Royal Horticultural Society as International Cultivar Registration Authority for Orchid Hybridspublished online at :www.rhs.org.uk/publications/ orchidreview/download/orrevmay03.pdf*I was unable to find photos of the two hybrids :Dendrobium Kimilsung FlowerDendrobium Kimilsungia***Regards,Viateur___the OrchidGuide Digest (OGD)orchids@orchidguide.comhttp://orchidguide.com/mailman/listinfo/orchids_orchidguide.com ___ the OrchidGuide Digest (OGD) orchids@orchidguide.com http://orchidguide.com/mailman/listinfo/orchids_orchidguide.com
Re: [OGD] Re: Eating orchids
In 2002 Turkey issued a set of 13 coins showing Flowers of Turkey. One of them is Orchis anatolica. In the write up for the set there is informationa about how this is one of the plants from which salep is derived. Pictures may be seen by going to the Turkish Mint web site. Click on commemorative coins for sale. Andy www.darphane.gov.tr/english.htm Jerry in Indiana---Steve is correct, it's "fox testicle ice cream" or salepi dondurma. It's aTurkish delicacy made from the tubers of Orchis provincialis, according to Eric Hansen, first in his article in Natural History magazine and then in his book Orchid Fever. Hansen describes the ice cream: "The cold silky orbs held the familiar flavors of apricot, pistachio, red currant, peach, vanilla, and bilberry, but there was a subtle aftertaste that I couldn't identify---slightly sweet with a subtle, nutty flavor similar to dried milk powder. It also had a hint of mushrooms, yak butter, and the smell of a goat on a rainy day." The popular dessert is purported to have medicinal properties, used by the Turkish people in preventing an array of maladies and as an aphrodisiac, as well as being elastic enough to use as a jump rope! Re: [OGD] Terry Glancy's: new malicious pests from Taiwan
Title: RE: Posts I've receivedall threeof the posts here in South Florida without any problems. Andy Lanier Hi, Terry A. Glancyhas tried three times to post this story on the OGD. He tried it in Rich Text and Plain Text and each time the message was rejected. I am just forwarding it to the OGD for him, to see if it will be accepted. If this fails again, I will try one more time by pasting the messagein my own e-mail. New malicious pests from Taiwan In an attempt to lighten the topic of importing Phals in media from Taiwan, I would like to submit this incident from a couple of years ago. We were helping some friends of ours from Taiwan who were shipping their show and sales plants directly from Taipei to Miami for a show up in mid-state Florida. We were just trying to help coordinate their simultaneous arrival with the arrival of their boxes of plants and flasks, brokerage coordination and paperwork, ag inspection, and subsequent transport up to their show area. The plants arrived maybe 10 hours before our commercial friends, but we received a call from our broker who said that the orchid shipment had to be gassed - flasks and all --- because of a new mealybug. I had never seen any pests on any of the shipments from this Taiwanese nursery when we had brought in plants for our nursery, so I thought this was rather strange. It was even stranger when the broker said that there were mealybugs all over the flasks. My wife went up to ag to actually see what was going on. She walks into the ag station and asks to see the shipment that had been gassed with methyl bromide. All the Catts in bloom were fried as were the Oncids, Phals, and Dens. The inspector then picked up a couple of Phal flasks and declared I cant believe it, the bugs are still alive and moving around!!! Barbara picked at one of the mealybug clumps, looks at it closely, and pops it into her mouth. Yup --- sytrofoam chips. Better watch out for those exotic pests now!!! Terry A. Re: [OGD] The older generation of orchid growers.
Title: The older generation of orchid growers. Did anyone ever interview Fred Thornton and Charlie Beard from the West Palm Beach area, also Clint McDade of Rivermont Orchids. I knew these growers very well and they were a trmendous source of knowledge. How I regret not sitting down and talking to them more than I did. Andy Lanier Harvey has touched on an important issue. Already, much anecdotal information about orchid growing in the United States has been lost. I do know Ernest Hetherington has accelerated his efforts in producing a long awaited treatise on the American Cattleya. I think the AOS is diligently assembling archival material but the volunteers who work on the Historical Task Force or whatever are not getting any younger nor are their numbers increasing. If everyone just took a voice recorder and chatted with one of their older local orchid identities, a whole heap of useful information could be accumulated. I have partly completed interviews with Ernest Hetherington and Merritt Huntingdon but there are many more orchid personalities that should be approached. Edwin Hausermann, Ernest Finney in the Chicago area, Paul Brecht in Southern California, Jean Merkel in South Florida. The list goes on and on. I still have great regrets that my efforts to interview Margaret Ilgenfritz a couple of years ago were unsuccessful. She had deteriorated too much both mentally and physically and was past being an interview subject. Re: [OGD] You're an idiot attacks
Hear, Hear, I've seen some very heated discussions on other Mail lists, but nothing resembling that on the Orchid Mail List. It's completely out of hand with all the name calling. Andy Lanier South Florida I'm sick of reading this kind of junk on this list. There is absoltuely no need or excuse for it, or for it to continue. (I am entirely in favor of vigorous discussion of ideas.) I ask the listowner to create a safe environment for the discussion of ideas by prohibiting such attacks on this list, giving those who do it one warning, and them removing from from the list. I have not seen this kind of uncivilized behavior on any other list that I am on, and it does not give our hobby a good reputation (are we really THAT narcissitic?), and indeed drives many people away. There are only a few who do this, and I don't think their presence will be missed. [OGD] Palm Beach Post article abouit Ghost Orchids
There is an article in the Palm Beach Post in West Palm Beach, Fl for Saturday, August 19, 2004 about the native leafless Ghost orchid. To read this article just do a Google search for Palm Beach Post and then scroll down and click on Accent on the left side. Immediately, a large picture of a blossom shows up. I haven't even read this yet but wanted to get the message out at once. Seems to be a lot of information with several pictures.
