Re: [OGD] Orchids Digest, Vol 8, Issue 45
Iris et al, Seems there could be a few insects matching the descriptions. Any chance of getting some pictures of them? I'm thinking they may by Lygus spp., perhaps Macrolophus or another type of Myrid bug (true bugs). Keep us posted if you ever do identify them! [OGD] Pk
I was quite surprised at the prices one certain orchid nursery was offering Pk hybrids for...$250 US and if it was an international order, it had to be at least $1000 US. OMG people, where is the reality in this? Does that nursery think so many people have the money for a plant costing that much? Maybe it's just an ego trip to be able to say ' I've got a Pk hybrid, have you gotten yours yet? Likely in a few years time, things will settle down. Yes, I'd like a plant of PK, but I sure as hell am not gonna pay THAT much for it! I think the nursery is bragging, just trying to openly say 'we have them, we've paid the money and now you should if you want one...no thanks, I'll wait. I must admit though, since it's likely already gone from it's native habitat, it's good too see some being hybridized and kept alive. But the price for a plant? I just can't se paying that much for it. [OGD] EC and pH
Does anyone out there know the correct EC and pH levels for watering orchids? I use tap water, Dyna-Gro 7-9-5 and Pro-Silica. I then let the 70 litre barrel sit for a day before using it to water my orchids. This is to let any chlorine in the water evaporate. Any help will be greatly appreciated. [OGD] imidacloprid
I'm just wondering if anyone's had experience using Intercept (Imidacloprid) on orchids, specifically for SCALE!! I am able to acquire some and would like to get feedback on the positives and negatives of using this chemical. Up here in Canada, it's called Intercept or Admire. I can get Intercept 60 WP (60% AI). Will it work on scale and also on flat mites? Any comments or suggestions will be greatly appreciated! [OGD] flat mites
I'm curious to know what other members of the digest have done in the past to rid their plants of flat mites. I may be wrong, but these are minute, reddish coloured mites, barely visible unless under at least a hand lens? I have a few orchids that are HEAVILY infested with them, seems like it's mostly the oncidiums and their hybrids. Please share your info with me either on the digest or by private email. I appreciate ANY advice on these little buggers! Cody in Canada ___ the OrchidGuide Digest (OGD) orchids@orchidguide.com http://orchidguide.com/mailman/listinfo/orchids_orchidguide.com
[OGD] D. spectabile
On another note, I've finally gotten my D. spectabile to initiate flower spikes! I got fed up with it not blooming and put it outside about a month ago. Last week when I was watering it, I noticed 2 big bumps on either side of a bulb, a 2 yr old bulb! I imagine the trick to getting it to bloom was going outside where it got pretty cold at night (about 6-9oC). It's in a lean-to polyhouse, so it's out of the rain. Has anyone on the list ever had one bloom off a 2 yr old bulb? The latest growths are about 3' tall, so I'm hoping in a few years, I'll have more than one bulb blooming! Bob typed: (Hello everyone! How about the idea the insects, birds, and mammals that provide for plant procreation were created for that purpose by God? The huge diversity of plant life and its importance in sustaining life on this planet would necessitate great care in designing ways for it to continue, and being created would account for the variety - pleasing to look at. In many cases, fascinating to watch. Over and over. How would you design a planet sized garden? Thousands or millions of one or a dozen plants and animals? Or what we have here? Fossils are the remains of organisms that died, showing they once existed (if they're extinct), or essentially unchanged (if still around). . Just my two cents. [OGD] re:mites
Hey everybody, To those of you who use that fantastic- alcohol concoction, can I kill mites with that? I haven't had much luck with neem and I've got the little beasties on some of my ctsm-alliance plants. Thanks much, Julia Julia, a little bit of dish soap in water (about a 9 or 10:1 solution) will work, but you need to completely cover the leaves. Safer's Soap works great too. The soap works by suffocation, effectively killing the mites that come in contact with the spray. I had mites on my Ctsm plant, one spray took care of them all! I recommend a second spray about 2 weeks later to kill any eggs that may hatch out. [OGD] re: bush snails
Can anyone advise if there's a product available in liquid form to combat Snails they are small snails in potting mix i suspect they are the one's eating some of my flowers and Roots as i have been spraying for everything else but don't seem to get rid of these little things. I live in Sydney Australia Iris replied: You have bush snails. They will eat the roots but that is probably not what is eating your flowers. Look for thrips or slugs. The only thing that will reliably kill bush snails is Mesurol. I don't know if it is sold in Australia. Ask in your nearest garden center or get hold of a certified pesticide applicator. Iris Thrips do not eat flowers, but do leave a typical streaking on them. They also leave behind feces while feeding, little black spots along the feeding 'lanes'. It could possibly be slugs, you'd have to look for them at night as they're mainly a nocturnal pest. The bush snails live in the potting media so are hard to find, but they will feed on the flowers at night, returning to the media as daylight approaches and feed on the roots. Iris is correct, the most reliable molluskicide is Mesurol. Do a Google search for Mesurol, find the active ingredient and see if there is something comparable in Australia. Drench your potting mix twice, about 2 weeks apart. This should take care of the snails. [OGD] Dr. Braem
It is sad when we lose a member of this list, particularly one that has extensive knowledge (especially Paphs.) of orchids. AsCarson Whitlow said, it was the personal, baiting attacks of a few immature people on the list, simply to get a rise from another person to the point they had no option left but use profanity. I imagine if the OGD was moderated, those people doing the baiting and personal attacking would be the 1st people I'd ban from the list, NOT Dr. Guido Braem!! [OGD] bush snails
We had the same problem in a commercial Gerbera operation up here in Canada. The bush snails were causing irregular leaf growth and no flower production, looking much the same as a viral or broad/cyclamen mite infestation. I took some plants that showed more pronounced symptoms and drenched them in plain water. Within minutes, the snails were crawling out of the soil and up the leaf stems. In my experience, I would suggest using a slug and snail bait. We have a bio-friendly product up here called Ferramol, the Active Ingredient is Iron Phosphate. It AI is a naturally occurring mineral, used in many agricultural fertilizer products and is found in the soil. It is harmless to people, animals, birds and aquatic life. The bait actually drew the snails out of the soil, where they fed on the pellets. The label suggests that even a small amount of ingested bait causes the snails to stop feeding and within 3-6 days, they begin to die of starvation. Within 2 weeks, the plants were growing normally and we could not tell which plants had been infested. Hope this helps! [OGD] vanda media
I don't think moss is that great of an idea, it seems to hold too much moisture, at least for me up in the soggy 'wet' coast of Canada. I use big pieces of lava rock for mine and they seem to grow fine. I use a single layer, mostly to hold the plant down, and soak the pant once a day for about 1 minute. My Aerides and Neofinetia seem to like this as well. On another topic...has anyone on the list had to deal with flat mites? I've got them, mostly on my Oncidiums and Dendro's. I try not to use chemicals, but... Thanks in advance, Cody Cruise Valley Pest Consulting ___ the OrchidGuide Digest (OGD) [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.orchidguide.com/mailman/listinfo/orchids
