[OGD] Novice question on Phragmipedium kovachii
I live in Sri Lanka and have never seen a Phragmipedium plant or flower, except in photos. If I may ask a seemingly "dumb" question: what is so special about Pk vs any other Phragmipedium plant that makes it so valuable? ___ the OrchidGuide Digest (OGD) orchids@orchidguide.com http://orchidguide.com/mailman/listinfo/orchids_orchidguide.com
[OGD] Sri Lankan orchids
I happened to pass a road-side tree that had been cut-down a few days ago. A number of orchids were attached to the tree trunk, and they seemed "dehydrated" (is that the correct term for a plant that's not got sufficient water?) and also seemed unable to cope with the full sun that they were now getting (plants were partially shrivelled). So, I brought as many plants as possible, tied them up on various trees that provided varying shade conditions - I don't know how much shade the plants would have received in the wild - and watered them . I'd like some advice on how to preserve these plants - the best means of reviving them, and re-establishing them on trees. I'm a total novice at orchids, so my knowledge is limited. The plants looked to me like a vandaceous orchid, but there were no flowers on them. Are there any published books on Sri Lankan orchids so that I can attempt to identify the plant if and when I get it to flower? [OGD] Novice question: scale
I have a scale infestation that's spread very quickly to half my collection. Given the way that I've grown my plants (mounted on concrete strips), it's not practical to treat each infected plant individually, so a systemic insecticide seems my only option. I bought such insecticide and made three weekly applications, but the scale is still there. Since the preparation was made following the manufacturers recommendation (X ml per Y litres of water), I suspect the amount of pesticide that I applied per plant was too low. My question is, how much of insecticide should be applied per plant: i.e. 10ml, 20ml ... etc? And how do I know when the infestation is controlled - i.e. how do I know the pests are dead? There are many "orchid experts" on this list, as well as other raw beginners (like me). I've learned quite a bit by reading other people's posts. So ask away ... [OGD] Dendrobium hybrids in Singapore
I will (probably) be visiting Singapore for a very short visit and would like to visit some nurseries specialising in dendrobium hybrids for tropical cut-flower markets. If anyone knows of such nurseries, could they please e-mail me their contact details (names, e-mail addresses etc.) - preferably off-list. [OGD] HELP!!! Something's eating my roots
I live in Sri Lanka and have some dendrobium hybrids growing on coconut husks. Something is eating my plant's roots - it seems to prefer the green root-tip but has also eaten the white roots as well. Could anyone tell me what's eating my roots and how I can get rid of it. Can I also ask why the root-tip is of a different colour to the rest of the root? Does it have a different function? My apologies if these questions sound dumb. Dinesh. ___ the OrchidGuide Digest (OGD) orchids@orchidguide.com http://orchidguide.com/mailman/listinfo/orchids_orchidguide.com
[OGD] Re: Orchids Digest, Vol 6, Issue 460
We use metaldehyde mixed with rice-flour (different types of flour should work as well) to make something like a 3-4% metaldehyde base. This is then mixed with fresh beer to form a thick paste. We then make small balls out of the resulting paste and put one on each suspected plant's potting mix. Hope this helps. Dinesh Can anyone advise if there's a product available in liquid form to combat > Snails they are small snails in potting mix i suspect they are the one's > eating some of my flowers and Roots as i have been spraying for everything > else but don't seem to get rid of these little things. > I live in Sydney Australia so would have to be able to try and pick > something up or make it to use here on Orchids So if anyone has any idea for > a Mixture i could use i would really appreciate any information i can get. > All the Best > Les ___ the OrchidGuide Digest (OGD) [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.orchidguide.com/mailman/listinfo/orchids
