Oliver, I think you may be citing the wrong author here. I thought it
was the Discworld's God of Evolution who was extraordinarily fond of
making beetles.

Nope, Oliver was right.  It was JBS Haldane who, when asked what the 
study of nature could tell one about the creator, supposedly 
replied "an inordinate fondness for beetles."  Pratchett must have 
been paying homage to the famous Haldane quote.
