I appreciate the consensus of messages. The tag's being changed to
arachnoidea and I'll wait for it to bloom.

Great discussions!
Should I be worried if my Renanthera monachica is getting
reddish?  It's not spots or the like, more like a flush over the whole
plant.  I think it might just be 'tanning', but I have no prior experience
with this genus.  One leaf, in the middle of the plant, is looking
sickly.  The entire plant is, at most, four inches tall - a seedling.
I also checked the roots - they look gray, but firm, with no new growth.
I've had it for about six weeks or so.
It is potted in a 3 inch plastic pot with large chunks of bark and
four extra holes (half inch) drilled into the pot side.  The plant
came to me in a peat/bark mix.  I also have some osmunda fiber if it would
work better.  I'm a little nervous about not using any media - I grow on an
east facing windowsill (morning sun) and water it when dry.  The relative
humidity is about 40 percent.
Thanks!

I think the one comment you make about paying taxes needs comment. Apparently the Taiwanese orchid growers are classified as farmers and do not have to pay any income taxes! That would appear to give them somewhat of an unfair advantage over their counterparts around the world.

2005-02-28 Thread Nabday100496

Hello Everyone!
Thanks to Stephen Kemp and Eric Hunt for their help regarding Dendrobium
forbesii,  and Dan S. with Aeranthes grandiflora.
My question concerns Paph. delanatii.  I've had this plant for about a
year and a half.  It has no new roots and the old ones are black and
wiry.  It was in a bark/perlite mix.  The new leaves are getting
progressively smaller.  As far as I know that means the roots are
dead.  I've just repotted it into long fibered sphagnum moss.  It's
under medium shade, intermediate temperature.  Any other
suggestions??
Thanks in advance.

[OGD] thanks and bulbo guttulatum

2005-02-22 Thread Charles Ufford
Hello everyone,
First, thanks all for the help with the lindenii hybrid search. If anyone
has pics for any of the other primary hybrids I listed before I would be in
your debt.

On another totally different note, I have a Bulbophyllum (Cirrhopetalum?)
guttulatum that has only one pseudobulb left. It has had one only for about
two years, and whenever it starts to put out a new growth or shoot, it turns
black and dies off. I originally rescued it from a collection of plants from
a former orchid nursery owner, and it had maybe three pseudobulbs at that
time. I think the one now is actually a new growth that survived, and the
back one died off after that. I have it in a somewhat warm spot, not too
bright. I have read very little info on the web, and of course one page says
cool, another says easy growing at intermediate, and another says warm. hmph
If anyone has good cultural info for this species I would appreciate it
very much, especially since it looks like it has two more growths of some
kind ready to emerge. I would be very happy to have this survive and thrive
of course, as it has sentimental value and I like the flowers quite a bit.
It is currently in a 2-1/4 inch pot with some probably old fine fir bark. I
have mounts of soft and hard tree-fern if anyone thinks that would be more
appropriate, and can put it in a cooler or intermediate/warm spot as needed.
If anyone really thinks it needs some fungicide I could take it to work when
one of the guys will be drenching something and have them splash it. I sort
of have the same problem with a bunch of my trichopilias (new growths often
blacken).

thanks again for your help,
charles

[OGD] Thanks to Viateur for Reference List

2005-02-19 Thread Charles E. Bracker
Title: Thanks to Viateur for Reference List

By the way, thanks to Viateur for his welcome contribution of the list of references on “Uses of Orchids” (foods, medicines, etc.) as item #2 in the Feb. 18 (Vol. 7, Issue 86) OGD release.  It seems to be a classic case of going from famine to feast (pun intended).  One person cannot track down everything by oneself to be sure, but working together, and cooperating is the way science works, and this kind of guidance is much appreciated.  No reason the OGD should not gain through the same mechanism.  I encourage all who know their sources and can remember them, to make them known to the rest of us when possible.

Cheers!

Re: [OGD] Thanks for Orchid Pod Maturation Sources

2005-01-20 Thread Pgordini

Sue,
My method for monitoring seed pods is to watch them for color changes, When the pod starts to turn yellow its time to harvest. Then put the pod somewhere cool and dry (air-conditioned homes meet the criteria) to finish ripening and shed its seeds. You can hang it in a jar with a piece of filter paper over the top to reduce the infiltration of dust and dirt and also cut down on seed being blown by the air circulation in the house.A Mason jar works well, you can even screw the ring on to hold the filter paper. Keeping the pod suspended improves drying and reduces the chance for rot.

Many thanks to Peter and Viateur for the excellent sources to find out the harvest dates for my Ansellia africana seed capsule. All listed were quoted from printed materials, so it seems that a comprehensive chart has not been made available on the Web.  Pity... this would seem so useful world-wide, IMHO. Nevertheless, thanks again for the heads-up so I can keep a watchful eye closer to the harvest time.

[OGD] Thanks simon re dactylorhiza

2004-09-08 Thread Jay Pfahl
Dear Simon,
Thanks for the excellent and informative article on my question as to
what Dactylorhiza I may have seen in the Orkneys. European terrestrials
are my weakest link, I do not have a single specicialty book about
Europe and it's orchids. I was quite amazed by how many I did see in
such a short time [I was only in the Orkneys for 4 hours and I saw 4
out of five species that were there according to the guide on the bus.
He did have an Orkneys Fauna and Flora book with each one's scientific
name and D maculata, D incarnata and D majalis were in it [to the best
of my memory] as well as a D. something var something. I should have
written it down, stupid me, thought I would remember, yeah right. There
was also another genus with the common name of green frog orchid but
this one I did not see. A great place to visiti if you can do without
trees.. I also saw the 2 habenaria like species in Southern France with
only 1/2 hour to look.
Simon thanks again on the lesson in Dactylorhiza. I will get back to
the list if Mr Carel Kreutz can come up with any ID's
