Hope he gets tired of ceramics quickly and comes back to origami soon ... :-) Hank Simon, sorry if I have hijacked your thread ... :-) Regards, Boon

Re: [Origami] Machine for Pre-Creased Origami
I do not know exactly which e-newsletter you are refering to, but this page has some examples of materials which can self fold. http://www.origami-resource-center.com/origami-science.html Hydro fold has paper that is wet in crease patterns; Polymer sheets with black ink crease patterns will fold with light; Composite metal sheets in crease pattern panelling will self fold with electric current Diana

J Barr Find someone that loves to fold exacting grids and beg, bribe, make friends with them for some pre-creased paper :-) I use a KNK Zing which is 14 inches wide. http://knkusa.com/shop/knk-zing/ There are many other such devices that are computerized cutting machines with the cutting head switched out to crease or score the paper. People also use lasers to score or perforate the paper. Cheers, Brian K. Webb
[Origami] Machine for Pre-Creased Origami

[Origami] Windmill base; was: what is this called?
On 15apr13, Kathy Knapp wrote: When a windmill base is folded, and each of the four arms are squashed, creating four preliminary bases, one in each corner, is there a name for this? And Nice Greetings Anna replied: Actually I'd only call it windmill base when it has reached this state. Usually I precrease the whole thing (4x4 grid and blintz) and collapse it all at once to reach what you describe to then call it windmill base. - My understanding, of many years, is that the stage when the four arms are lying flat is the Windmill Base, since this is what the Windmill is made from, in fact, this pretty much *is* the Traditional Windmill. - When the arms are squashed, I have never heard any name for this configuration. . Chila Chilagami - I think, therefore I fold; I fold, therefore I am Folding for Fun in the Mojave Desert Southern California, USA www.chilagami.blogspot.com ---

Some years back his primary interest shifted to other things, including making ceramics (I also have a lovely set of ceramic drinking cups that he sent me). A few years ago I visited his sushi shop and he still had some origami on display, but I think he is no longer highly active in origami. One question I have been wanting to ask : Is Hatori still folding? Really hope he is as I would love to see more of his exquisite works. Regards, Boon Ditto from me on the beauty of Hatori Masao's folding. Many years ago, I visited his family's sushi shop and saw models of Robert's, John Montroll's, mine, and others in glass display cases. They were extraordinary. It gave me an appreciation not only for Hatori's folding artistry but also for the craft of making sushi and, in turn, for the degree of skill and focus that can be brought to all disciplines.
