Re: [Origami] Studio update and Artist question (Seth)
Hi Seth, I don't know if it's already been covered in this thread but I've recently discovered that silica gel (the stuff that comes in little white packets sometimes in bottles of vitamins) can be bought on Amazon very inexpensively. I've been using it in my gym bag and it works great. That could be a great option for longer term storage though I imagine that "too dry" long term could also be a problem for paper/glue/sizing. -- JC
[Origami] Methods for creating duo-tissue paper?
A few years back I had a need for duo tissue paper (2 pieces of tissue bonded together) and used my standard method for foil-backing paper... It was a VERY not pleasant experience. Did not go well, though I was able to save the resultant mess with the liberal use of an iron and paper cutter. But I was thinking... there's probably much simpler way to do it that would work much better? Perhaps watered down horse-glue or something? Anyone have any ideas or experience with duo-tissue preparation? -- JC
Re: [Origami] Flat rectangular models with color change?
Hi Gerardo, In "Creating Origami" there are several models that might fit-the-bill for you. You can see images of all of my models on Gilad's website. http://www.giladorigami.com/BO_Creating_Origami_Nolan.html Most of the "decorations" are color-change and square, all of the "Colored Lover's Knots" can easily be square by just moving a single flap behind each point (it's obvious that to do if you are holding the model) and many of the "Seven Simple Bracelets" are rectangular before you make them into a loop. However, none are on the web as you mentioned, just in the book. E-mail me directly with more info about your project and I could possibly post them on the web for you. -- JC
Re: [Origami] teaching reverse-folds
Hi Andrew, It's been a long time since I've been teaching, but back in the day when I did I would hold up a separate square of paper, fold it diagonally into a triangle and then, without pre-creasing the fold I would demonstrate the action in the air using the words "Now, stuff the point down in the middle so that it goes in between, then mush it flat" and hold up the result. At that point you would get lots of reverse folds of various angles and many without clean points (ie, not following the original diagonal crease.) At that point I would say "Excellent, very good. Now I'll show how we can do it even better" and proceed to demonstrate it with a pre-crease and also making sure that the original diagonal crease is properly reversed. While the students generally struggle quite a bit more on the second try this method was much quicker than trying to show them on the model itself on a particular crease. Also, I always had a rule when teaching students who weren't already origami fans that there be at least 1 adult assistant for every 6-8 students. So with a class of 30 I'd pre-arrange with whoever I was teaching for that there be assistants to help. In absence of that I'd yield to having the student's help each other, "Ok, if you've got it check with your neighbour and see if they need help." This of course has it own dangers (smarter or more experienced students taking over for less inclined neighbours) but all in all it tends to have class move faster and with less chance of frustrated students. I've found that the tension between "getting it right" and "getting it wrong" is one of the intimidating factors in learning origami by students. Simplifying the step and making the space to "do it sloppy" the first time can really help take the edge off. -- JC
[Origami] Toot: Kindle copies of new books
Hey All, Just got news yesterday that the Kindle copies of "Origami Dragons <http://www.amazon.com/Origami-Dragons-Tom-Stamm-ebook/dp/B00VCO00T4/ref=sr_1_4_twi_1_kin?ie=UTF8&qid=1427658852&sr=8-4&keywords=jc+nolan>" and "Origami Kids <http://www.amazon.com/Origami-Kids-32-Projects-Designed-ebook/dp/B00VCAMTGA/ref=sr_1_3_twi_1_kin?ie=UTF8&qid=1427658852&sr=8-3&keywords=jc+nolan>" are now available on Amazon. I've wired it up so that if you've purchased a paperback copy in the past then the Kindle version is free! Also, tracking downloads on Mancini's SIP <http://creatingorigami.com/diagrams/diagrams.html> and Andrea's Rose <http://creatingorigami.com/diagrams/diagrams.html> diagrams both have crossed the 26,000 mark. Pretty cool... :-D -- JC
Re: [Origami] Small origami model for condolence card for US, Veteran
I like the traditional Peace Dove. I recall many years ago OUSA (FOCA?) had it as one of its holiday models and that year I made my X-Mas cards using small colored versions taped to white folded card stock. They were a big hit... http://www.saintmatthew.org/peacedove/ I'm not sure why the photo-step folds make it look so complex... it's not that hard a model to fold. Not sure where to find the original diagrams either. -- JC

[Origami] Sad news about Patricia Crawford
I learned yesterday that Patricia Crawford passed away on March 28, 2014. I spoke with her husband Bob briefly on the phone in response to some material I forwarded to her regarding a new book that I'm working on. The family has always been quite private and I was only able to talk to him briefly. He seemed quite broken up around it even with almost a year having passed. In the 5 or so minute conversation I had with him he mentioned some amazing ships (non origami) she had been working on later in life. Unfortunately, the line dropped before I was able to ask him about photos, diagrams or any other material that might be in his care. Based on how private the family is I would not recommend trying to contact them directly but if you'd like to send a remembrance you can forward it directly to OUSA or me at my personal address and I'll collect them all and forward them to him when the right time comes. With a heavy heart, JC
Re: [Origami] Giving someone else's trading card to a friend?
I've heard about this "trading card" thing before but have no idea what it is. Can someone give me a bit of a description of what they actually are / what they look like / what the "protocol" is with regard to them?
[Origami] Origami Book Fold
Hey All, I was at a local "Book Arts" show the other day and the program that they were handing out was so cleaver and simple, with a few folds and one strategic cut you can create a multi-page book out of a single sheet of legal-sized paper which when unfolded shows the map of the show on the other side. Does anyone know the source of this design? I've created some (preliminary) diagrams that I want to share but want to make sure I give the proper attribution if the creator is known. I posted the rough version of the diagrams at http://creatingorigami.com/diagrams/bookfold.html -- JC
[Origami] A Couple of Holiday Toots!
Hey all, Just wanted to send out a couple of announcements for your post-turkey pre-holidaze preparations. The first is a very late announcement that /"//Tom Stamm's Origami Dragons/" is finally available. It actually went live in July but with my surgery and recovery I've been very remiss in announcing it. It contains Tom's original "/Sea Serpent Dragon/" model which was released in booklet form from OUSA way back in the day... but also contains several other of his dragons including his charming "/Multi-Piece Sea Serpent/" and a few others which have never been diagrammed before. All re-diagrammed by me (and somewhat re-engineered under Tom's close guidance it also includes a set of 4 new flapping dragons (3 by me one by him). Like "/Mooser's Train/" the book is basically priced as low as possible that Amazon allows so that as many as possible can access his work. You can check it out on my authors page: http://www.amazon.com/J.-C.-Nolan/e/B00O4PNHKM - *Stamm's Dragons* Secondly and probably most exciting is that the newly restored and updated versions of the entire 30 year history of the FOCA/OUSA Annual Collections are now available in the same beautiful paperbound versions that the past two years of the OUSA Origami Collection (2013/2014). Making these available in paperback form has been a multi-year project with over a half-dozen volunteers (you KNOW who you are!) contributing 100's of hours of time to beautifying and preserving these wonderful books containing models and early diagrams and explorations of many of the best known creators today as well as, of course, updated work as their art has evolved. (/Engel, Lang, Montroll, La Fosse, Shafer, Weiss, Robinson, Koh, Kirschenbaum, etc./) 2500 models and 750 contributors in all. The books all have updated colored covers (as the originals were just one-color xeroxes) cleaned up scans and hand-centering of every single page (initially anyway, later we wrote some custom software to do it because it was taking hours to recenter a single book). Currently the books are only available through OUSA's Origami Source and are priced extremely reasonably (only $10 a book for members). They are a special order item from The Source so if you are looking for a set (or just a few) for holidays it's a good idea to order them ASAP as delivery time is probably a couple of weeks or so: https://origamiusa.org/catalog/books-downloads/series/collection - *FOCA/OUSA Annuals* Best holiday wishes to all! [Origami] Assistance w/German translation of "Andrea's Rose" (or other languages)
Hey All, I was recently in communication with Henny Fonville of The Dutch Origami Association (OSN) who's helping me out with a translation of "Andrea's Rose" to Dutch. As part of the campaign I'd translated "Andrea's Rose" to all the major languages that I could think of (focusing specifically on the languages of the various countries that contributed) and re-discovered that I'd left out German! The process is quite simple and tends to take only an hour or so depending on your fluency. It consists of me sending a MS-Word doc in English containing just the text and the translator returning the same document with the contents converted to their language. We've got over a dozen so far... http://creatingorigami.com/diagrams/andrea.html I'd had a few possible people lined up to help but due to bandwidth issues (theirs and mine, at the time) so it fell through the cracks. Are there any German speakers who would be interested in helping me with translation? Or any other language for that matter? Elvish anyone? ;-) Cheers, JC Nolan - -- Lokah Samasta Sukhino Bhavantu --

Re: [Origami] Practigami: Neorigami's first printed book
Have you considered offering this as an EBook download for purchase in addition to the print copy? One of the biggest costs and prohibitions to purchasing books comes from dealing with shipping, etc. Origami USA seems to be doing a great job with this in diagram/booklet sales (Robert - maybe you can comment on how it's going? From a customer's perspective it's awesome). Hope you'll consider that! Rob Robert can of course add a lot more detail but just to chime in... the OUSA repository is set up to let anyone put up books/diagrams in e-book format and publish them through OUSA's channels whether OUSA member or not. It's pretty easy, all you need to do is set up an account and go through the submission process... -- JC
[Origami] Francesco Mancini's SIP and new book
Hey All, Just wanted to send a shout out to Francesco Mancini who's "Six Intersecting Pentagrams" diagrams which this month crossed 20,000 downloads since it was originally posted in June of 2011! He's also already logged 2,500 downloads of his "XYZ Rhombi / UVWXYZ Stella" in few months that it's been posted. http://creatingorigami.com/diagrams/sip.html http://creatingorigami.com/diagrams/uvwxyz.html He also came out with a book of his own designs which I was lucky to get a preview copy of... it truly rocks. http://www.origami-cdo.it/cdo/magazines/qqmint.htm Congrats Francesco! -- JC - -- Lokah Samasta Sukhino Bhavantu --
[Origami] "Origami Kids" / Origami by Children V1
Hey All, I’ve been holding out on the news with this one but havejust conferred with OUSA/OBC and want to announce the first in a series ofbooks produced by OUSA’s Origami by Children book. The series has been titled “Origami Kids” andconsists of original models designed (and possibly diagrammed) by folders underthe age of 18. The first book has actually been available since late Junebut we were waiting to make a formal announcement. http://www.amazon.com/Origami-Kids-32-Projects-Designed/dp/1484953150 The first book in the series is based on my original visionback when I wrote “Creating Origami” to inspire young folders to become designers/artistsof their own and contains several wonderful early works by several well-knowncreators today. We are hoping to produce the next volume in the series sometimenext year and are currently accepting contributions for possible inclusion. For more information about submitting work toOBC and/or future volumes see http://origamiusa.org/obc All profits are to be donated to OBC/OUSA and the book is getting a lot of attention. Help the cause out and give it a little love... could be a great holiday gift for that talented young folder in your life. Cheers, JC - -- Lokah Samasta Sukhino Bhavantu --
Re: [Origami] Diagrams in the web with black background?
I think they look totally fun Geraldo... and having a white on black version for printing is a fun idea though I'd encourage you to consider keeping the inside grey and perhaps even the lines/arrows grey on the printed version. Though I've not chimed in much on the topic I am extremely passionate about diagramming/diagrams being considderd an art-form as well as a form of instruction. And in that they are an art-form every diagrammer, if they choose to be, is an artist... and therefore "gifted" with the privalage of doing whatever the heck they want! It's their art. Period. Happy Holidaze, JC - -- Lokah Samasta Sukhino Bhavantu -- o many folks that I have worked with.
[Origami] Mooser's Train book...
Hey All, Inspired by the work I've been doing with OUSA with Pubs/Archival, I decided to create a special "extended" version of the Mooser's diagrams I did earlier this year for the 2013 Annual and put them in paperback form for the holiday season. I thought that they might be a fun gift this year to inspire that "special kid" in your life (even your inner kid ;-) The book version is full-color, includes the original 20 pages of diagrams, updated/cleaned-up versions of the original "photo-step fold hints" which were on-line previously, all the original car variations and two new pages of diagrams with a nice locking sequence for connecting cars that Rui Rhoda and I came up with while he was working on photos for the cover. http://www.amazon.com/Moosers-Train-Origami-Set/dp/1492800651 And of course the free version of the diagrams is still online as well... http://creatingorigami.com/diagrams/train.html Enjoy! -- JC - -- Lokah Samasta Sukhino Bhavantu --

[Origami] Fwd: Query
"And thus continue to wonder, is the hollow head/hook arrowhead really showing direction?" I'm in agreement with the statement but find the way it is stated a bit confusing. For me, I always have my arrows (of any type) track the arc of the paper as it moves (see the second page of my posted "Andrea's Rose" diagrams for many examples of inward vs. outward arcs.) As for the "hook" on the fold behind arrow, it is always on the convex side (outside) of the curve... which amounts to the same thing as described in the original posting.
[Origami] Call for Models
Hey All, I've been working on a process to automate the production of diagrams for models and am wondering if anyone out there has something relatively simple that they've been wanting to diagram. I'm thinking Adv Beginner to Lo Intermediate for this phase (squashes / crimps ok but petal folds too hard). I'm happy to work with step folds or sketches. Please contact me if interested. I can't guarantee diagrams will result, but they might. And in any case it would be extremely helpful to the process which hopefully will be useful to everyone at some point, patricularly if I get a wide range of initial sources to work with. -- JC - -- Lokah Samasta Sukhino Bhavantu --
