Re: [Origami] Does a standing desk converter work for origami?

2024-11-02 Thread Mizu-randa
How’s your walking Andrea? I sit and fold as long as I can and then I go do
something else. Mainly household things like putting the garbage out, collect
the post from my letter box, filling the washing machine etc. A few minutes are
enough for me and then I can sit and fold again for at least an hour but
usually more. And I get some household tasks done as well so the knife cuts
both ways. ;-)

I have developed some hip problems and cannot sit for extended periods of time.
A mix of standing and sitting would allow me to fold longer. Has anyone ever
used a standing desk converter (is put on your current table/desk) or a
standing desk for folding? If so, would appreciate both your thoughts and any
recommendation for specific desks/converters.

Don’t worry Lorenzo, they’re al the ‘usual suspects’ and a lot of the models
have been published on Instagram and other socials. And btw it’s not uncommon
for a competition (especially artistic) to be under motto or pseudonym. Well,
in this case the organizers chose to leave out the names altogether. I don’t
care, I don’t think any artform should be subject of a competition as art is by
definition too divers and comparison is therefore impossible.

Re: [Origami] one side colored paper

2022-11-20 Thread Mizu-randa
Sorry, no reference of any kind but I’ve always been told that it goes back to
‘ancient’ history.

In the beginning there was white paper only, very expensive so only monasteries
could afford it. Monks used paper strips with painted on texts to decorate
their monastery for special worshipping sessions. Later they started to fold
the strips and then put texts on. This is how origami started and why the paper
is only coloured on one side.

I don’t know if it’s true but it’s a nice story so I never verified.

Re: [Origami] Research on gender differences in origami

2022-08-10 Thread Mizu-randa
Hi all,
No articles or any proof, just an observation.
Historically in the Netherlands fine creative crafts are generally considered
‘for girls’. In the (not even very) old days the craft lessons in school were
knitting and embroidery for girls and carpentry for boys. Of course this was
also the case in every day life because we didn’t know better. Over time most
differences faded or disappeared but for some reason the creative crafts kept
the label ‘girls’.
The strange thing is that in kindergarten Fröbel-folding was a standard subject
for girls and boys, the teachers were even schooled in it during their studies.
But folding wasn’t followed up in primary school back then. Nowadays there are
a lot of teachers that use origami in school. Not so much to stimulate
creativity but rather to enlarge the attention span and refine hand-eye
coordination.
Anyway, thinking back to conventions and other gatherings I guess ca. 95% of
Dutch folders are female. But ‘we’ fold everything, from practical things like
boxes to abstract things like tesselations and everything in between.

It depends on how complicated the unit is. If it’s only 5 or 6 folds I tend to

I don't remember where the idea came from (Germany I think) but we've been
trading at the Dutch weekend convention for about 15 years. Any model you
can put on a mini cloth peg will do, although safety pins, double sided tape
and thread are also used. It's not about the model as such, it's about the
trading and sharing.
At our convention all participants always get a lanyard to show to the hotel
personnel who's in our group. Usually there aren't any other guests so it's
not really necessary but the lanyard is a perfect place to put the pins.
There you have it, free advice from an experienced expert. :-D

Mine's a Kawasaki rose that I taught to my mother.
My father came back from a business trip and brought me a wooden rose for my
blue vase. There was already a plastic rose in it and a silk one but he
thought uneven was better. But I was already drying a real rose so that
would make 4 and now I 'needed' a 5th to make it uneven again. My mother
wanted to learn some flowers anyway so she suggested to teach her a rose
first. But the only 'real' rose I knew was the Kawasaki one, not really a
beginners model but it turned out very nicely.
All this is about 40 years ago, I've moved house a couple of times and
emigrated to France but the blue vase is still on my bedside table, with all
5 red roses in it.

In the google ngram viewer (a website that let's your search for term in

a large amount of books) I looked up origami, and found in various
languages, that the rise of the term "origami" began in the 1980s [1]

Japan was booming in the 80's and things like the Nintendo and the
Playstation became very popular in the west. This triggered the interest in
Japan in general, especially because Japan had been rather 'closed' untill
then. I know that the Japanese community in the Netherlands was very active
in those days, organizing markets and fairs and such. And of course origami
was a part of it being a traditional Japanese art. Dutch people have always
been into crafts, probably because of the Fröbel system we had in
kindergarten (and the bad weather ;-)). This involved folding too so origami
was just the next step.
I for one was very happy with this development because I had been doing
origami since the early 50's and it was really hard to get proper paper and
diagrams. My father had been on several business trips to Japan and brought
me some nice stuff but that's off topic. ;-)

knife, I always thought the part you use to crease is the one that would be
the cutting edge of the knife, but one video shows that the part used is
totally the other side, the one that is straight.

I think the only 'right' way is the way that works best for you. I use the
sharp pointy end to fold small corners or to separate layers. The plump
other end I use to fold the rest as the sharp end can damage the paper more
easily, especially on long folds.

As long as both sides of the tato look interesting it's no problem. But
usually only one face is so maybe you could glue two back to back. Then it
doesn't matter how much they move their head, the earrings will always look
nice.

That's it. Thank you in advance ; )

As Judith already wrote, nail polish is too agressive, especially for
handmade paper. I use diluted standard white wood glue in 2 or 3 very thin
layers. If the layers are too thick you'll end up with a white glow on the
paper. It has to be a lot thinner than nail polish, more like milk. The same
goes for Mod Podge which is more or less the same stuff. They're both great
paper glues by the way.

The model sounds like one of Jeremy Shafer's from his book "Origami to

Astonish and Amuse". Look on the right side of this Sneek preview, pages
228-233:

Thanks a lot Anna but that's not it.
The model 'Folding the Blintz Base' is similar but in the one I'm looking
for there were only two hands.

[Origami] folding hands

2017-10-02 Thread Mizu-randa
Hello,

Ages ago I folded a model of two hands and if I remember correctly they were
(self) folding hands.
The model looks a bit like
http://www.mcescher.nl/galerij/terug-in-nederland/tekenen/.
I’d like to fold it again but I don’t remember where the diagrams are and I’ve
already searched ‘everywhere’.
So I need your help, can someone please tell me where I can find these diagrams?
Thanks in advance for putting an end to my frustrating search.

Miranda

Re: [Origami] 3D Origami

2017-09-30 Thread Mizu-randa
Golden Venture is all about the result as where the process of folding is
just as important to me. The process is part of understanding what you're
doing while, as Sunil said, this 3D is just block stacking. That doesn't
mean it has no merit, I certainly enjoy doing it from time to time. Mostly
for gifts because a lot of (usually non-origami) people like the look of it.

[Origami] korean cranes again

Thanks everybody for all the information, it's really helpful.
In all my 60+ years as a folder I've never seen this folding method before.
Just shows that you're never too old to learn. :-)

[Origami] korean cranes

2017-03-17 Thread Mizu-randa

Hi all,

On the Facebook page of the Origami Therapy Association is a message saying
that there's a difference between a Japanese crane and a Korean one. But
they didn't say what this difference is and I never noticed it so can anyone
please satisfy my curiosity?

Thanks,

[Origami] f.j. caboblanco

2017-03-05 Thread Mizu-randa

Hi all,

I'm trying to find the address of F.J. Caboblanco, home and/or email.
The OSN has published one of his models in their magazine Orison and would
like to send him a complimentary copy. He probably sent in his design
himself, either without any other information or the enclosed letter got
lost. I'm new to this permission lark and don't know what happened but I
would really like to contact him.

Thanks for your help and please contact me off list.

Did I miss it, or has it folded? <

There was another one now (ended December 11) but I don't know who initiated
it. All messages were in both English and French so it's probably done by
someone from a French speaking country. I was invited and I happily accepted
but sorry, that's all I know.

1. Is there proper etiquette in asking for permission (ex: more formally
through their website, a more casual facebook private message…)

Maybe any creators could answer.

I've been asking for permission for the magazine for a while now. I've used
all methods and so far nobody complained. However I do mention my email
address in Facebook messages but most people just reply on Facebook. Last
week was the first time that someone actually replied by email.
As a creator I don't mind but people usually contact me by email through my
website.

All it takes it one person to go to a lawyer and you have all kind of

annoying legal problems. <

Come on, don't you think this is a bit exaggerated!? I may have some
concerns but we're all doing origami for pleasure and not to get rich. And
as the origamiworld is a democracy everybody can either accept the
majority's view or withdraw his contribution, in stead of 'threatening' with
legal steps.

after some discussion, it was always possible to obtain back copies by

sending more than one diagram. <

No money is involved. I would never sell this book <

I was of course not talking about selling, I was just surprised that all
issues were still available and could be ordered. Apparently I misread that
they were available to everyone. Sending back copies to participants is no
problem for me at all, I can understand that a 'new' participant would like
to have the 'old' books as well.

Do you think that would be a good solution or do you prefer the books to

stay unpublished for the wider audience?<

I always understood that the books were a one-off and only available to
participants. After the 'secret' period (usually February) all designers are
free to do with their designs what they want. So I'm highly surprised that
you still have them in your system and that anyone can order them.
I prefer to stick to the original plan and make the book available to the
participants only and let them decide when and where to distribute their
designs/diagrams. Maybe a book of photos can be available to everyone
interested and then they can contact the designer for diagrams themselves.

Origards,
Miranda

PS: I would be very disappointed when the Christmas Book would stop to
exist, I still think it's a great idea.

Anyone know about this man and why he has a paper folding book among his
impressive portfolio of books?

I don't know why but I can think of several possibilities. As Vanessa is
mentioned first as an author it could be her book for which he made the
photos. Or of course they were into origami together.
By the time De Maré went to architectural school Walter Gropius (Bauhaus)
was a well know name in modern architecture. He was known to be a huge fan
of Fröbels ideas and De Maré may be influenced by that as he felt strongly
about modernising architecture. From Fröbel to origami is just a small step,
many of us started the same way. ;-)

I was just curious about the fact that in the message thread about Paolo
Bascetta's model it is referred as *Parallelepipedo*, in Italian, instead
of the English word "parallellepiped."

It's the name Bascetta gave to his model and names are never translated.
If your name is John you're not renamed Giovanni in Italy, Jean in France,
Juan in Spain etc.
