Re: [Origami] Does a standing desk converter work for origami?
How’s your walking Andrea? I sit and fold as long as I can and then I go do something else. Mainly household things like putting the garbage out, collect the post from my letter box, filling the washing machine etc. A few minutes are enough for me and then I can sit and fold again for at least an hour but usually more. And I get some household tasks done as well so the knife cuts both ways. ;-) Origards, Miranda From: Andrea Plate via Origami Sent: Saturday, November 02, 2024 5:23 PM To: origami@lists.digitalorigami.com Subject: [Origami] Does a standing desk converter work for origami? Has anyone ever used a standing desk converter (is put on your current table/desk) or a standing desk for folding? If so, would appreciate both your thoughts and any recommendation for specific desks/converters. Thanks in advance, Andrea

From: Lorenzo via Origami Sent: 20 August, 2023 21:50 Have you ever seen an artistic competition where you, voters, didn't know anything about the author? I never have. Don’t worry Lorenzo, they’re al the ‘usual suspects’ and a lot of the models have been published on Instagram and other socials. And btw it’s not uncommon for a competition (especially artistic) to be under motto or pseudonym. Well, in this case the organizers chose to leave out the names altogether. I don’t care, I don’t think any artform should be subject of a competition as art is by definition too divers and comparison is therefore impossible. Re: [Origami] one side colored paper
Sorry, no reference of any kind but I’ve always been told that it goes back to ‘ancient’ history. In the beginning there was white paper only, very expensive so only monasteries could afford it. Monks used paper strips with painted on texts to decorate their monastery for special worshipping sessions. Later they started to fold the strips and then put texts on. This is how origami started and why the paper is only coloured on one side. I don’t know if it’s true but it’s a nice story so I never verified. Re: [Origami] Research on gender differences in origami
Hi all, No articles or any proof, just an observation. Historically in the Netherlands fine creative crafts are generally considered ‘for girls’. In the (not even very) old days the craft lessons in school were knitting and embroidery for girls and carpentry for boys. Of course this was also the case in every day life because we didn’t know better. Over time most differences faded or disappeared but for some reason the creative crafts kept the label ‘girls’. The strange thing is that in kindergarten Fröbel-folding was a standard subject for girls and boys, the teachers were even schooled in it during their studies. But folding wasn’t followed up in primary school back then. Nowadays there are a lot of teachers that use origami in school. Not so much to stimulate creativity but rather to enlarge the attention span and refine hand-eye coordination. Anyway, thinking back to conventions and other gatherings I guess ca. 95% of Dutch folders are female. But ‘we’ fold everything, from practical things like boxes to abstract things like tesselations and everything in between. But I was already drying a real rose so that would make 4 and now I 'needed' a 5th to make it uneven again. My mother wanted to learn some flowers anyway so she suggested to teach her a rose first. But the only 'real' rose I knew was the Kawasaki one, not really a beginners model but it turned out very nicely. In the google ngram viewer (a website that let's your search for term in a large amount of books) I looked up origami, and found in various languages, that the rise of the term "origami" began in the 1980s [1] Japan was booming in the 80's and things like the Nintendo and the Playstation became very popular in the west. This triggered the interest in Japan in general, especially because Japan had been rather 'closed' untill then. I know that the Japanese community in the Netherlands was very active in those days, organizing markets and fairs and such. And of course origami was a part of it being a traditional Japanese art. Dutch people have always been into crafts, probably because of the Fröbel system we had in kindergarten (and the bad weather ;-)). This involved folding too so origami was just the next step. I for one was very happy with this development because I had been doing origami since the early 50's and it was really hard to get proper paper and diagrams. My father had been on several business trips to Japan and brought me some nice stuff but that's off topic. ;-) Origards, Miranda

I prefer to stick to the original plan and make the book available to the participants only and let them decide when and where to distribute their designs/diagrams. Maybe a book of photos can be available to everyone interested and then they can contact the designer for diagrams themselves. Re: [Origami] curious book by Eric de Mare
-Original Message- From: Clare Sent: 02 October, 2016 09:27 Anyone know about this man and why he has a paper folding book among his impressive portfolio of books? I don't know why but I can think of several possibilities. As Vanessa is mentioned first as an author it could be her book for which he made the photos. Or of course they were into origami together. By the time De Maré went to architectural school Walter Gropius (Bauhaus) was a well know name in modern architecture. He was known to be a huge fan of Fröbels ideas and De Maré may be influenced by that as he felt strongly about modernising architecture. From Fröbel to origami is just a small step, many of us started the same way. ;-) Origards, Miranda

Re: [Origami] Name "Parallelepipedo"
-Original Message- From: Gerardo @neorigami.com I was just curious about the fact that in the message thread about Paolo Bascetta's model it is referred as *Parallelepipedo*, in Italian, instead of the English word "parallellepiped." It's the name Bascetta gave to his model and names are never translated. If your name is John you're not renamed Giovanni in Italy, Jean in France, Juan in Spain etc. Origards, Miranda Mme A.M. van de Beek Antibes, France www.vandebeek.eu
