[Origami] Call for 8OSME organizer proposals

2022-05-10 Thread Patsy Wang-Iverson
Hello,

The call for 8OSME organizer proposals is now available at:

https://osme.info

The first deadline of June 30, 2022 is simply for an expression of interest,
with final full proposals due on September 30, 2022. Organizers can decide when
to hold the conference between 2023-2025.

The OSME-Steering Committee (OSME-SC) is available to answer questions and
share past experiences. It will announce the winning proposal by October 30,
2022.

Can you please help with distributing this announcement to groups you think may
be interested in hosting 8OSME, including yourself and your colleagues?

Thank you!

Best wishes,

Re: [Origami] Advice for models to teach to kiddos

Dear Dawn,

Re suggestions for two action models

Here is one suggestion.

Kids and I like the 'kissing lips' action model, although for that age I
would suggest calling it 'talking mouth' to avoid the yuk response.

It's all right isosceles triangles (*not* diaper fold), with one scalene
triangle (this sentence is for you, Mark Kennedy).

I have folded it with classes of gr. 4 and gr. 8 students (in under 30',
with kids helping each other) and both levels liked it.

Will send you photos.

Hope you're well.

Thank you, Vishakha, for posing the initial question, and thank you,

I just learned recently that I can order new dollar bills from my bank if I
order at least $100.

Dear Sara and Marcio,

Re I'll be hosting a live video stream on November 11th at 9pm CET

Sara, you are in my calendar for 3pm EST on 11/11.

My celebration of WOD begins today. Here is my schedule:

1. Thursday, 10/24: Stony Brook University to see dedication of
Helaman Ferguson's umbilic torus. commissioned by Jim Simons for the
Simons Center* for Geometry and Physics (thanks to Michael Assis for
the alert):

Make sure you click on the photos.

Ferguson is a mathematician/sculptor who wrote the software for the
robot needed to make the etchings.

*Although this activity is not directly related to origami, it does
link art and mathematics. Also, the Simons Center hosted Christine
Edison as the first resident artist this past summer.

2. Saturday, 10/27: Cambridge, MA for second annual OrigaMIT convention:

3. Sunday, 10/28: Folding Paper: The Infinite Possibilities of Origami
traveling exhibit at Keene State College in Keene, NH:

4. Wednesday, 11/7: MathEncounters lecture by Robert Lang:

Best regards,

Patsy
PS Anne, I remembered to switch to plain text. ;-

Chris,

Thanks for your follow-up detailed note.

Re 2. The flapping crane, nice big inside reverse folds

3. The traditional crane-- petal folds!

I'm glad you taught both versions, as I've encountered quite a few people
who can fold the crane but say they can't fold the flapping bird.

I was in Philadelphia last week attending a fundraiser for Philabundance.
As I was giving a flapping bird to one of the workers, an individual walked
up and exclaimed, I lived in Japan for 20 years, and I never saw one
flap. ;-

Thanks!

Patsy
