Re: [Origami] Introductory Models for Adults
Chris, Thanks for your follow-up detailed note. Re 2. The flapping crane, nice big inside reverse folds 3. The traditional crane-- petal folds! I'm glad you taught both versions, as I've encountered quite a few people who can fold the crane but say they can't fold the flapping bird. I was in Philadelphia last week attending a fundraiser for Philabundance. As I was giving a flapping bird to one of the workers, an individual walked up and exclaimed, I lived in Japan for 20 years, and I never saw one flap. ;- Thanks! Hi Chris, I join in to thank you for your follow-up about teaching origami to adults! Patsy wrote: I'm glad you taught both versions, as I've encountered quite a few people who can fold the crane but say they can't fold the flapping bird. I was in Philadelphia last week attending a fundraiser for Philabundance. It was at an origami convention, in a class about creativity by Jeremy Shaffer. As a point of departure he mentioned the flapping bird and had us fold it to study how it moved. Everyone knew it except me! As a child I had learned the crane and someone had told me that it could flap. Of course I could only manage to make it wiggle its wings... I didn't know that the one that flapped was another bird altogether. I learned that we can never take any model for granted when we teach, no matter how well known it is, many people might have never seen it. [Origami] Introductory Models for Adults
Date: Thu, 6 Sep 2012 11:36:32 -0800 From: Chris Lott ch...@chrislott.org Subject: [Origami] Introductory Models for Adults To: Origami Mailing List origami@lists.digitalorigami.com I'll be doing some relatively informal origami teaching (non-profit!) to a group of adults... Any recommendations on models that seem accessible and gratifying for adults? Models that are surprising? Models that are impressive without being overly complex for the neophyte? ... c -- Chris Lott chris.l...@alaska.edu I wouldn't worry about it! Grown-ups seem to like the business card frog, the water-cup, the traditional paper hat, the water-bomb, the magazine-cover box, the flapping bird... just as much as kids do. If adults think these quick traditional stand-bys are too childish for them, point out the usefulness of these models for distracting fractious kids!
