Re: [Origami] document cameras for origami demo-ing

2020-05-04 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
Thank you so much Andrea P. for your question about document cameras to
teach origami online and all the answers explaining how they used a
smartphone instead! I had not thought about that before.

I taught tonight how to fold a model in the GP3 meeting. I used
an android OS smartphone as my webcam. This is how I did it:

1. I installed DroidCam both on the smartphone and my Windows OS laptop.

Smartphone app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dev47apps.droidcam=en

Windows OS: https://www.dev47apps.com/droidcam/windows/

2. I followed this steps:
https://www.digitalcitizen.life/turn-android-smartphone-webcam-windows

3. I attached the phone to the arm of my desk lamp using a rubber band. The
cool thing about that was that I could then use the lamp as a light source
for the paper.

4. I connected the smartphone to my laptop through USB. I didn't need to
but that way I wouldn't have to worry about the phone's battery.

I do have to learn to check the laptop screen every now and then, because
sometimes I wasn't placing the paper in the center of the frame. It'll take
some getting used to : )

Before DroidCam I tried two other apps but I wasn't able to get them to
work: IVcam and IP webcam.

Hope this information helps Andrea or anyone else. I'm really thankful with
the information you've all shared. Before, I was folding on the air or
against a wall, but now I can use this solution for my
conference/workshop... Hooray!

I use the camera of my phone (Samsung Galaxy J8) to record short videos.
The setup I'm using is a selfie/makeup stand with a led lamp, it works
wonderfully. Keep in mind, the videos I'm making are for Instagram, I'm
considering uploading them to Youtube, but I prefer my DSLR (Canon 6D mk I)
for that. It all depends on the editing and quality of the video.

I wanted to mention that you can use an iPad, and probably even a cellphone,
instead of a document camera. Here’s what I’ve done:
Place an 18-inch stool or other stable object on the desk.
Put the iPad on the stool with the camera protruding over the edge.
Have the back camera facing down and aimed at your folding surface.
Be sure to have the mic off on the computer and on on the iPad.
When it’s time for the conference, log in from your iPad and a second time from
your desktop or laptop computer. You will use the iPad video only for
demonstrating. The computer will be for images of you.
When you teach, pin the iPad, and it will look just like a down-facing camera.

Hope this is useful!
Jane

I repurposed an old phone(Pixel 1 XL) and microphone stand using the IP
Webcam app and OBS. Been teaching with it once a week and it's been a very
effective setup.

I work in a hotel and we had a client use a small stand to hold his iPad above
the work area, and software on the iPad to use it as a document camera. He was
teaching a multi-day art seminar with it hooked to a projector and it worked
very well.

I was about to comment the same thing. I use my iPhone 8, which has a good
camera. Also got an articulate suspension arm that you screw to the edge of the
table. It’s just 25 bucks on Amazon and it has a pivotal arm, larger than the
Ipevo stand so you can bring it closer or farther away from your hands. Also
got a second suspension arm that comes with a Led ring light, I didn’t try it
yet but I think it serves to smooth the light of scene in a close up.
Not sure for how long the iPhone can take a video before it’s full. Perhaps a
camera is better.

Hi Andrea,
Ditto what Mary said. I used my IPEVO to teach a figure by Zoom the other day,
and it worked well. The image is sufficiently clear, and it’s easy to switch
between the IPEVO USB camera and the camera built in to my laptop.

Thanks,
Matthew

Hi Andrea

I have a Ipevo doc camera, cost less than 100$. Easy to set up, works just
fine. OUSA owns several that we send to presenters for Origami Connect and we
use them for conventions as well. Contact me directly for more info.
