Alex.

how do they handle the System.exit(0) problem? can you call that from a
jsp? maybe I missed that but I once noticed that it is possible to take the
server down doing that and also remember hearing someone mention that. can
that be configured?

System.exit() is a SecurityManager protected method. If a security manager
is
installed it will be checked before exit is allowed.

Robert,
To be honest, this is something that i havent tried :)..
And probably wont for the time being heh..
As far as I know, your absolutly right it will take down the server but
there again, perhaps the latest versions of orion have new
functionality in this regard.

Re: Orion Hosting Service

2000-09-17 Thread John Barrett

I'm seriously considering putting a hosting service for Orion online, but I have some
concerns that I'll have to address before I
can do it. One is particular is integrating UID/GID support into the web server (i.e.
Orion runs as root, but as each request comes
in, it "backs down" to a specific User/Group defined in the app config, and then kicks
back to root when the request is done). I can
guaruntee this idea wont work on a system running Green Treads, but it might work ok
with Native Threads. Without a feature like
this, I dont have much choice except to run an orion server for each customer, which
is clearly unacceptable.

I had to make similar modifications for my apache server after being snubbed by the
apache server folks. They seem to think that
forcing ISPs to run all customer apps as external CGI is a good thing (I use PHP and
mod_perl extensivly, and the patches I made
allow my customers to SECURELY take advantage of the in-server modules). (Yes, I know
orion runs php/perl as external CGI, but I
dont expect many customers to want both jsp/servlet/ejb support and script language
support)

[just wait until I start talking about a JNI standard module interface for linking in
embedded script interpretters :))]

Next thing I would need would be something like the Enhydra web-console, but secure
for customers to access only their own
applications. Given then user/group fix, I could probably handle this issue :))

The only other choice I see for folks wanting to get an orion service is to co-locate
or lease a server from an ISP (we do both
[http://www.isitetech.com], but despite our good prices, most folks arent all that
interested in a hosting service that only has 6
megs of bandwidth at the moment -- but we are growing :)), then you have the whole
server to yourself and can do whatever you need
:))
