RE: Orion doesnt' start as other user then root ??

2001-03-22 Thread Frank Eggink

Eddie,

If you check the mailing list and or www.orionsupport.com, you will find some
decent answers. What is causing your trouble is the fact that port 80 is for root only.

One of the trick is using the packet filtering technique of the firewall of your site
and forward
all packages for orion to say port 8080 on your server (and make sure orion listens to
that:
see default-website.xml).

Good luck,
FE

Are you on unix box? If so, you need root to open port 80. You could
probably run on another port. I think ports up to 1024 are restricted.

You are correct, in that ports up to 1024 are restricted. I think there is some
information on running Orion on Unix in www.orionsupport.com.

Sorry, I was a bit to fast.
The problem: my disk was full.
I was thinking a bit to difficult as it was just a simple thing.

2001-03-22 Thread Gerald Gutierrez

This is unnecessary. The IP chains mechanism in the Linux kernel can forward
packets from one port to another, allowing orion to run as anyone
(perferably as someone that has only permissions to do what it has to do).
It still requires that the user have root acess so that he can set up the
forwarding.

Fortunately, this is detailed at orionsupport already, so no need to go into
details here.

I imagine that is acceptable for that, however I would seriously look at the
unix mechanisms for starting orion as root then changing it to a diferent
uid. (nobody, orion, whatever) with lower permissions.

I don't know why but I can only start orion as root.
When I start it as user orion it complains:

It looks like a permission problem. I've had similar problems with starting
Orion but because was trying to access to use port 80 that is restricted to
root (up to port 1024).

I've managed to solve the problem having root starting orion, using sudo
(so I don't have to be root) and I can even restart it from a web page.
Consider that I do not use Orion as a web server but just application
server.

 Hope this helps,
 Alex
