[OSGeoLive] OSGeoLive 13.0 status: distribution

2019-08-20 Thread Angelos Tzotsos

Hi all,

We are officially freezing builds for 13.0.

Regarding the final iso, there is an open motion from our weekly meeting:

MOTION to call rc3 as final.
Here is my +1,

Best,
Angelos

Re: [OSGeoLive] What next for SeasonOfDocs

2019-08-20 Thread Angelos Tzotsos

Hi Felicity,

Welcome to our mailing list :)

Best,
Angelos

Hi all,
Please see below my initial conversation with Cameron regarding a plan to
start working on the OSGeo Live QuickStarts for my Season of Docs project.

Basically, this month I want to:
- collate the list of QuickStarts
- prioritize them to work out which ones to work on first
- establish points of contact
- establish preferred comms method and frequency to keep people updated
with my progress.

Thanks
Felicity

Hi Felicy,

Sounds like a good plan, more inline.

I suggest we move this email thread to the public
osgeolive@lists.osgeo.org email list. (Feel free to include my comments
publicly).

Hi Cameron,

Here's my immediate plan:

  1. Look at OSGeo-Live Packages spreadsheet to see which packages have
changed between releases.

It will also be worth checking the currency of each of the quickstarts. I
expect that at least half haven't been updated for 2+ years, and will
likely be out of date.

2. Ask the OSGeo Live mailing list if they have suggestions for specific
Quickstarts to start with. I will draft this email and send to Cameron for
review first.

We should also prioritise based on how big the project is (more widely
used = more impact).

We can get an indication of use from:
https://live.osgeo.org/en/metrics.html

Also, how much help you get from a volunteer from each project. We have a
list of points of contact which I can share with you. Me, Astrid and
possibly Angelos can help introduce you to people too.

We want to ensure that your work is sustained long term, and that happens
by getting engagement from each project, who will pick up from where you
leave.

3. 13 August release OSGeoLive - I need to install this on my VM after
release.

Yes, make sure you get the latest release. I think the last release
candidate will become the final release.

By September I should know which ones to start with, and have a plan of
attack.
By mid-September I should know roughly how long it's taking me to do each
one - so I can extrapolate timings.

Sounds good.

The FOSS4G conference sounds like a great opportunity to possibly get some
help. Let's talk about how we can handle that.

Yes, we should discuss this on the email list.

*Comms*
- Besides yourself, is there anyone else I should be keeping in the loop?

Talk on the OSGeo-Live email list, and there is a weekly IRC chat (at
6:00am Wednesdays for us). We might move to a different timeslot.

We should reach out to the point of contact for each project. Astrid has
been reaching out to points of contact of late, and should be able to help
quite a bit here.

Also likely to help with the technical side of docs and translation are
Nicolas Roelandt and Vicky Vergara.

- Do you want fortnightly updates of progress? What sort of frequency?

I think weekly updates to our osgeolive list would be handy. Keep them
very light. A sentence of two should suffice. A large part will be to help
inspire others to get involved based on what your are doing. It will be
better for you to do less and get engagement, than do more, and then for
docs to be unmaintained in the future.

- What method? Be good if I could have a public project plan and you could
just look at that to see my progress - how could I do that? Hmm, how about
a Trello board? That might work... How do you feel about Trello? I've made
a board for myself but if you are not a fan I can always report progress to
you in some other way. https://trello.com/b/nLd70AJX

We haven't used Trello with OSGeoLive yet, but I think it would be good.
Lets float on the OSGeoLive email list and hear what others have to say.

Hi Felicity,

As you are now an official SeasonOfDocs writer, and in the "getting to
know the community" period, I thought it might be a good idea to plan
out how you might want to progress.

In particular, I want to know how I can help you best, likely by
reaching out to people in the community and nudging them to work with you.

Of note:

* OSGeoLive release is due 13 August, (so we likely won't get much
engagement from them till later in the week at the earliest)

* But the international FOSS4G conference (free and open source software
for geospatial) starts on 27 August in Europe, and we can potentially
have someone announce your work and attract volunteers to work with you.
So we should discuss that.

* Feel free to reach out to me when you are free next. You can try
slack, but I'm not very good at noticing. I do notice my SMS.

Re: [OSGeoLive] looking for the OSGeoLive svg version of the one-page-flyer

2019-08-20 Thread Jody Garnett
Hello Astrid:

The OSGeo Live PDF was generated by GetInteractive and is contained in the
osgeo-onepage-a4.indd

file
alongside the one page osgeo handout.

You may wish to contact GetInteractive and see if they can quickly make the
required changes for us. One of our members here has an InDesign license
and can edit also.

The goal was to keep the designer in their preferred environment due to
coast. As it was Pim (and Anita) spent way to much time trying to get
Scribus to work (sigh). At least this way we have the original files to
work from.
