12. June 2024 see also
https://trac.osgeo.org/osgeolive/wiki/Press%20Releases

The build cycle for the next OSGeoLive release 17.0, has started. Our
base operating system for the new version is Lubuntu 24.04.

The final version is planned to be ready in October 2024 to be ready for
FOSS4G 2024 in Bélem (Brasilia) [1].

Please have a look at our schedule for the detailed steps [2].

Open tickets are listed in [3].

We are looking for new projects
---

For this release, we hope to help OSGeo Community projects join
OSGeoLive, and work out how we can keep within our size constraints.

You are welcome to join our team!
---

Are you interested in joining our Open Source GIS experience?

Are you a programmer or packager with experience in one of the Open
Source GIS applications? Are you a technical writer interested in making
FOSS4G accessible to all?
Are you interested in helping update translations to latest documents on
Weblate [4]?

Contact us

If you would like to add a new project or have another goal you would
like to work on and get involved you are very welcome.

Please join the OSGeoLive mailing list [5] or OSGeoLive Discourse [8]
meet us on Jitsi [7] at our weekly meetings (Tuesdays at 19:00 UTC).

Our wiki can be found on [6].

Documentation and translation
-

With this building cycle we are starting with a new category [8] on
discourse.

The main focus of this category is documentation and translation.
Translation is taking place on [4], and we have a basic training video
[9].

We want to be able to add as many new languages to the release's
documentation.
Those with at least 35% will be considered for inclusion in the
documentation.

If you have questions on how to add a language, please do not hesitate
to ask in [8].

Pull requests for documentation are welcome in OSGeoLive's documentation
github repository [10].

Documentation & translation meetings will take place on OSGeo meet for
OSGeoLive [11]

Ubuntu 24.04 iso is now larger than 4GB.
This is achieved by using several squashfs files that are combined on boot
 time using casper.

 http://ftp.usf.edu/pub/ubuntu-releases/24.04/ubuntu-24.04-desktop-
 amd64.list

There is actually a topic discussing how to customize with squashfs file
 larger than 4GB:

You can install them through APT by enabling an Apache repository:

provide pyarrow, just the C++ libs.  The later are sufficient to build
the OGR Parquet driver (this is what I use to build the Ubuntu-based

For Pandas, I guess doing "pip install pyarrow" might be sufficient

Angelos,

Thanks for that. I spent some time going through permissions for different
things, but seemingly to no avail.

The one thing that worked was locating where the GeoServer startup script
actually was (find didn’t seem to help much), and running it with sudo. I have
read and write permissions on that file as a user, but maybe something inside
it needs sudo to work

[OSGeoLive] Missing press relese

2024-04-28 Thread Vicky Vergara via osgeolive
Hi all,

I am about to tag the documentation to 16.0.0

In v15 release:
https://github.com/OSGeo/OSGeoLive-doc/releases/tag/15.0.0

You can see that I put a link to the press release.

We are missing the press release for 16.0.
https://trac.osgeo.org/osgeolive/wiki/Press%20Releases#a2023

I will proceed with the tag and when the press release is ready I will edit
the comment.

Re: [OSGeoLive] Newbie query about Geoserver on OSGeoLive 16

Hi,

The issue you are facing is probably due to permission issues:
Make sure that the user you created has enough permissions to start
geoserver.

the installation of Geoserver is, and it seems even Linux ‘find’ isn’t bringing

What am I doing wrong? I thought I would start with an apt-get update/upgrade

Am I just getting everything wrong?

@channel we're excited to announce that TorchGeo has officially joined
the Open Source Geospatial (OSGeo) Foundation! Check out our new project
page: https://www.osgeo.org/projects/torchgeo/What does this mean for
our users? Not much will change in terms of direction or governance, but
OSGeo offers additional advertising, stability, and legal support. We
also plan to apply for an OSGeo incubation program, which may provide
funding for additional conference tutorials and outreach. Stay tuned for
additional announcements, and feel free to join OSGeo as members so we
can all build better open source geospatial software together!

found several messages, but I did not find any solution. I was checking
also a github issue in geonode (#6073) where this problem was spoken,
and according to that it is related to the geoserver version and
configuration...

I have just checking OSGeoLive 16 version, but I have obtain the same
error.

Any one have a different experience or got fix this problem in some how?

Thank you.

Regards,
Pablo

[OSGeoLive] Java3D Installation in MacOS

2024-01-05 Thread barth.r.c.er--- via osgeolive

Hi, I recently installed GPSPrune and found out, Java3D is not pre-installed.
So I was downloading it from Oracle. Following the instructions to install it I
failed. Can you please let me know in which directory GPSPrune is expacting
Java3D to be installed? I guess it is the default JRE directory. But how to
find out and how to copy files there if permission is not given? I checked the
default folder which should be under the JDK default folder which I don‘t have
?-)
I am using MacOS in Version 14.2.1 in a M1 Silicon Chip MacBook Pro and Java
JRE 8.

 Dear Community,

after starting the ETF, a window opens with a loading bar.
When the bar finishes loading, a browser tab opens with the URL where the
 ETF is hosted (localhost:9090/ETF).
Initially, this URL returns a loading error because the ETF is still
 deploying.

If we wait a few seconds and reload the ETF in the browser, it has
actually been loaded correctly and it is correctly displayed in the
 browser.

We are working in a workaround to improve the user experience, so we
kindly request a few hours to improve this.

 Best,

Have to do some final changes on pgRouting's workshop, therefore I will use

That would cover testing:

* Geoserver

That changes with the latest GeoServer due to the work done doe “harmonize
opengis” initiative.

GeoNode will work with the 2.24.0 release as is. Java 11 required.

Re: [OSGeoLive] OSGeoLive 16

2023-10-29 Thread Angelos Tzotsos via osgeolive

Hi,

Please read this issue:
https://github.com/GeoNode/geonode/issues/6703

We tried to upgrade GeoNode to 4.x but it did not work out on the first
try, so we kept the same packages as in OSGeoLive 15.

GeoNode 4.x packages are available here:
https://launchpad.net/~gcpp-kalxas/+archive/ubuntu/geonode/+packages?field.name_filter=_filter=published_filter=jammy

About uploading a layer: GeoNode requires a special build of GeoServer
to work as expected.
Since we are using the official GeoServer package for OSGeoLive, some
GeoNode functionality is not going to work.

The future strategy needs to be discussed.

Best,
Angelos

When uploading a layer, I get a "Bad Request" or something in that nature.

This has now been happening for the last few releases of OSGeoLive.

Is there any workaround, or how can I make it work?

Hi all,

We are officially freezing builds for 16.0.
The final iso has been uploaded to SourceForge and the git tag has been
created.

https://sourceforge.net/projects/osgeo-live/files/16.0/
https://github.com/OSGeo/OSGeoLive/releases/tag/16.0.0

We will work to prepare the final VM during the Vienna code sprint.

Enjoy!

Sorry, I have not received Enock's e-mail, thank you for the update.

The press release should be sent once we have all the release items in
place (iso, VM, web site).

I think it is more realistic to plan this in Vienna.
For now I will prepare the iso.

As far as I know, you can not use that translation for PR.
You need to use weblate.
But you can find the strings on the presentation resource on weblate and it
will make the PRs automatically.
Example automatic PR:

Link to portuguese presentation resource

Re: [OSGeoLive] OSGeo-Live at Geolivre 2023

2023-10-13 Thread Luís Moreira de Sousa via osgeolive
Hi Vicky,

thank you for the detailed instructions, I was indeed able to compile the
presentation this way. These instructions are substantially different from
those in the README file in the presentation folder, perhaps something to
correct in the future.

I will see later if I can use the translation for a pull request.

Regards.

Re: [OSGeoLive] OSGeo-Live at Geolivre 2023

2023-10-12 Thread Vicky Vergara via osgeolive
Hi Luis
Unfortunately my efforts have been only on the html.
No latex, no pdf, only html
Haven't even tried to create a latex version.

To build (all the documentation):
Install python requirements
https://github.com/OSGeo/OSGeoLive-doc/blob/master/.github/workflows/deploy-pages.yml#L34

mkdir -p build
cd build
# this will build english and spanish
cmake -DHTML=ON -DES=ON ..
make
cd ..
# this will cleanup duplicate images
bash scripts/clean-images.sh

>From there the presentation is only one file you can get this file(s)
build/_build/html/en/presentation.html
build/_build/html/es/presentation.html
(and the _images directory)

You can edit that final result and create a Portuguese translation.
The majority to be translated are the speaker notes
Very little titles are to be translated.

If you are presenting I recommend that you only translate titles, and just
study the speaker notes.

As Astrid mentioned, Portuguese is only 12% translated
https://weblate.osgeo.org/projects/osgeolive/#languages
We need a minimum of 33% to include it in the documentation.
Maybe during your presentation you can encourage people that can help
translate to give a hand.
They need an OSGeo id
https://www.osgeo.org/community/getting-started-osgeo/osgeo_userid/

Regards
Vicky

Portuguese is not published yet. So we would have to check with Vicky

FOSS4G, the most efficient would be to simply translate the last general
presentation. Is it possible to get access to the slides presented in Kosovo?
Or perhaps they are already available somewhere?

Thank you and regards.
