August 07, 2006 The Hizbolleft >From a report in <http://www.socialistworker.co.uk/article.php?article_id=9416> Socialist Worker of Saturday's demonstration in London: While the march encompassed all those opposed to Israel's aggression, those speakers who declared their solidarity with the resistance in Lebanon and Palestine received huge cheers. You see what one word can achieve? The word in this case is 'resistance'. And what it does is draw attention away from the fact that one of the organizations being referred to under this description, namely Hizbollah, is sworn to the destruction of Israel, propagates <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hassan_Nasrallah#Views> hatred of Jews and is supported by a regime whose President has likewise called for Israel's destruction and deals in Holocaust denial. Well, you'll be familiar with and bored by the standard moves: 'just because you're a critic of Israel, it doesn't make you an anti-Semite'; 'but being a critic of Israel doesn't necessarily mean you aren't one'; and so forth. Something I know with some confidence, however, is that there was a time on the left when expressing support for a quite explicitly anti-Semitic organization would have been a matter of disgrace, of shame. Now it can not only be done but done with enthusiasm - and without any supporting explanation. It's just part of the <http://normblog.typepad.com/normblog/2006/07/hymning_hizboll.html%20> normal spectrum of left opinion. How things do move on.
