Re: [OSList] Using OST to facilitate Agile process

2015-11-14 Thread Lari Karreinen via OSList

Hello Kim and Daniel

This is very interesting because I've started a process with Finnish Red
Cross Youth to learn agile way and Lean for startups -method. We've used
open space to inspire about 100 youth volunteers to do experiments
within a month. Their energy was overwhelming and the experiments they
have planned are now implemented.

This has also challenged the way of working in the Finnish Red Cross, as
big NGOs tend to emphasize planning over doing. Now they are doing the
experiments within 2 month cycles.

The hierarchical structure of the organisation challenges us, because
paid staff is in headquarters but the volunteers are scattered all over
the country in several disctricts and branches. For example we don't
have a possibility to gather volunteers to meet live for a
retrospective. Now writing this I think arranging an online open space
could be one solution.

It has been demanding to apply SCRUM framework to an NGO. They are such
a different worlds. We are learning a lot. And now learning faster.

I wish I had known OpenSpace Agility beforehand, but now I'll have to
catchup with it. Great, thanks!

Lari,

You inspire with this story.
Please keep sharing how this larger experiment grows as the smaller ones take
place around Lean startup and scrum. It sure sounds to me like you did 'know'
about open space agility !! You were creating the same events.. So exciting!

Re: [OSList] Using OST to facilitate Agile process

2015-11-14 Thread Daniel Mezick via OSList

Hi Lari,

The basic idea with OpenSpace Agility is to begin and end in an Open
Space of at least one day, with experiments in between. In OSA, the team
experiment with Agile practices that are aligned with the 4 values and
12 principles of the Agile Manifesto.

FAST

Ron's FAST method for organizing teams is aligned with the Manifesto's
core principles. FAST leverages Open Space to radically accelerate
self-organization across several teams addressing a single project. This
is well explained at the bottom of this page:

http://www.fast-agile.com/method/values-principles

So OSA creates a 45-to-100-day ENTERPRISE WIDE iteration of
experimentation bracketed (contained inside) the before/after Open Space
events. FAST applied this idea to related teams on a single project and
SPEEDS IT UP, via 2-day hyper-iterations again bracketed with what we
might best describe as before/after Open Space events.

Before/After OST Events

What we are learning is that *before-and-after Open Space with
iterations from 2 to 100 days is a very powerful pattern *for change in
organizations. It actually works. "Why" it actually works is still in
the "mysterious" stage. That does not actually matter, since we have a
firm grip on the "how." Frame a theme. Begin in Open Space. End in Open
Space. In between, extend that open spirit. Trust the folks. Do
experiments. Learn. Formally authorized leaders: Invite everyone into
the act of writing the new story.

So, maybe consider giving it a try.

Here's a blog post that suggests: always needing to know "why" something
works... might actually be very expensive..

http://newtechusa.net/agile/start-with-how/

Open Space is amazingly resilient. I'm clueless about why.

And that's OK. Lari if you have questions I invite you to ask here or
send me an email if you want.

Daniel

Are there any archives of sets of measurable success indicators for key

Here in the rust belt provinces of Ohio, I doubt that EU is interested.
But I'm certain that local foundations would look favorable on proposals
that use base line data gathered from particular lines of change in
terms of social or self-organizing results, evidence (sauce)?

Re: [OSList] Expenses

2015-11-14 Thread Michael M Pannwitz via OSList

Did you ask the EU?
Imagine they were interested or imagine not only interested but actually
granting a bundle, how would that shame the locals.
I remember how activists in Seattle got Japanese collaborators to send
care packages (rice) to Seattle when the food stamp program for the city
was threatened.

It worked. Back in the 80s, I think.

By the way, you never asked me. How come?

Re: [OSList] Expenses

2015-11-14 Thread Michael Herman via OSList
i can think of at least two that i've done, tony...

the proceedings, with invitation and summary, from the 2001 illinois food
security summit are here...
http://www.michaelherman.com/foodsecurity/files/foodsecurity2001.pdf
follow-on event files at michaelherman.com/foodsecurity. this work was
funded by one of chicago's largest foundations, the chicago community trust.

this work was funded by an nsf grant...
https://sites.google.com/site/shiptoshorescience/ this was open space to
generate pilot projects on a planning grant that were then brought back
with results to feed implementation grant.

also... the chicago community trust runs something called "on the table"
where they post some discussion questions and invite people to convene
conversations city-wide, and report the results back through a website.
not exactly open space, but also not quite foundation business as usual.

Re: [OSList] Expenses

2015-11-14 Thread Thomas Herrmann via OSList
I think it could be any funds that wish to support a good cause, assuming there
is one and that there is competence available to reach solid results. Then, for
me, using OST would probably be beneficial but you'd need to get that message
through to the ones in charge.
Wishing U good luck!
Go for it!

interested in local development, I have a lot to learn.

So you are teasing right, you have funding available? ;-)

[OSList] Issue and Indicators

2015-11-14 Thread Tony Budak via OSList
**The project would gather a local implementation team and raise
funding, to* replicate the following Welsh model, which did not
explicitly use OPT in the original initiative, ***but would add Open
Space in a refreshed iteration*.

Theme Issue:*
Community Enterprise Networks will be adopted as a third sector led
strategic regeneration program. The project embeds innovative
methodologies for growth into local communities, resulting in the
establishment and progression of a Community Enterprise Networks in the
Convergence area, addressing the development of Building Sustainable
Communities. Community Enterprise Networks will advance long term
regeneration benefiting the most deprived areas of the Mahoning Valley
thereby increasing Community Economic Development_.__

_*Possible Indicators include:*

 * Develop Community Enterprise Networks
 * Develop socially inclusive communities that are participative and
   empowering
 * Build social enterprises
 * Development an overarching infrastructure to assist local organizations
 * Encourage more effective involvement of citizens
 * Organizations adopting or improving Equality and Diversity strategies
 * Organizations adopting or improving Environmental Managements systems

*So hopefully looking for funding sources and for your comments, thanks
again and again.**

**Best,**
**Tony*
