Re: [OSList] Opening Space for Listening, after the US election

2016-12-02 Thread Lucas Cioffi via OSList
Chuni Li, thank you for the kind words.

Michael H, I took your suggestion last week and dropped by my Congressman's
office. Their staff thought the idea of holding conversations with people
to be very foreign, and I find that to be unfortunate. The sad truth is
that they don't even know what they don't know.

The reality is that we all have limited time to pursue these kinds of
volunteer, community building efforts due to the requirements of work,
family, and other responsibilities. When we (and we all do) face
roadblocks, we have to get our second wind and try again if we want to
achieve any meaningful results.

Everyone on this list wants to change the world in some big way or a small
way–or at least invite the world to change itself. I'm probably not alone
in thinking that it's tough to know which projects to double-down on when
the initial level of interest is moderate. I realize I'm only interested
in doing the hard work of opening space and not the very hard work of
invitation. It's easy for me to walk away and say "whomever few came were
the right people" but I know that I didn't give the invitation process my
best effort; I just wasn't willing to sacrifice a lot of time to a project
that didn't start gaining traction on its own. Maybe that's me being wise
and conserving energy for the next project, or maybe it's me being lazy, or
a combination of both.

Either way, that's me thinking out loud. I hope y'all have a great weekend.

Elwin and Joan, You beat me to it. I thought I'd get a head start on December
2nd by pretending I was still in Manilla at World Open Space. It's December 2nd
there now, this place who adores Harrison Owen as much as we all do around the
world. Time to tip our glass to him with such appreciation for this coffee
break gift of Open Space and the guy with the hat who brought it to us. Each
year since 2009 when I first discovered Open Space, it's been a tradition to
remember and celebrate this very special day of December 2nd - the birthday of
my late father who read Harrison's guide in Italian and then quizzed the heck
out of me afterwards. Dad knew at the source that this was something very
special and I felt his approval in pursuing this work.

So dear Harrison, may life treat you in a very special way as you have treated
us all these years - with generosity, guts, candor and such wisdom of life.

Hugs, Suzanne

Re: [OSList] Open Space undermined?

2016-12-02 Thread Michael M Pannwitz via OSList

Dear Karl,

I was wondering about humans loving repeating patterns.
My observation is that children do insist on repeating patterns.
When I read to my kids and now to my grandkids from books that they are
familiar with, I often alter a sentence or add one. Without exception
they notice and exclaim "Nein, Opa, das steht da nicht!"

With adults I wonder about us "loving" repeating patterns. I am thinking
of such stuff as the patterns of holidays or the agenda in the church
worship or the way the table is set for a birthday or the kind of food
served on special occasions (thanksgiving...). Of course, these are
repeating patterns. And a deviance can split families...

To me it seems to be the kinds of patterns (ritual, agendas, cultural
stuff,...) that give us "security" "belonging" "identity" but also keep
us in our "bubbles".

So, looking at the emotional responses of myself I find them, the
responses, completely out of logic, especially looking at the tenacity
defending them.

In my context here in Berlin with many refugees populating neighborhoods
a very occasional appearance of a burka gets folks ferociously upset.
Its like an attack on our bubble.
(there are millions of muslims living in Germany but fewer than 1000
wear a burka, the kind that covers everything except the eyes).

So my take on this is that children do love patterns and us adults need
them to feel secure in our bubbles.

Just this minute two of the refugee girls that have adopted our house
and garden for their School after school activities are demonstrating
how easy it is for them to step out of their bubble in that they adapt
themselves to a really foreign new environment.

Lets watch the kids.

Greetings from Berlin on a sunny Dezember day thinking of the mans
birthday and surely getting into the pattern of having a martini
cocktail with definitely only a tinge of martini in the drink

I am surprised that the author of this research considers that
unconferences are characterized by a “distinct lack of structure”!
OST has a very clear and precise structure; it may be minimal but it is
exquisitely minimal which is why it is so powerful and effective.
Reminds me of when I was a kid and my music teacher considered that jazz
was not “real music" 

Professor Emma Bell, Professor of Management and Organisation Studies, Keele

December, at 14:00, in Meeting Rooms 3 - 4 in the Michael Young Building.

Abstract:

In this paper we focus on the organisation of ‘unconferences’, an umbrella term
that refers to a range of off-site meeting formats where there an explicit
attempt to break down social hierarchies and develop organic forms of
organization (Burns and Stalker, 1961). Also referred to as ‘camps’,
unconferences have no pre-set agenda, are designed to be participant driven
(Wolf et al., 2011), and are characterised by a ‘distinct lack of structure’
(Boule, 2011: 17). Drawing on a qualitative study of unconferences aimed at
managers and management consultants, we assess the extent to which
unconferencing enables the hierarchical power relations that characterise
conventional off-site meeting organisation to be overcome (Bell and King, 2010;
Ford and Harding, 2008). We find that unconferences go some way towards
addressing interactional and performative dynamics that contribute towards
unequal participation and exclusion in off-site meeting encounters. However,
our analysis also highlights the powerful behavioural norms and group dynamics
associated with off-site meetings which can result in these attempts at
openness and sharing being undermined.
