Just following up on this a year later, the developers subsequently added 
an option to the Trip recording plugin to disable "Auto-split after gap".  
A belated thank you.

Some of my recent GPXs ere automatically split; others not.  All 
are set to Split interval: none (from My Places/My Tracks.)  Could this be
a bug?
